MBR BEST 100: Tokyo Marathon will move its current date from the last Sunday of February to the first Sunday of March. The next Imperial succession is set to take place in 2019, meaning that February 23 will become the Emperor's Birthday national holiday starting in 2020. The race date is being moved to avoid any potential overlap since the finish area is in front of the Imperial Palace. There were concerns due to the large number of people in the area to celebrate the Emperor's birthday.

MRB FAST FACT: Brent Weigner, 68-year-old from Cheyenne Wyoming, has run a marathon or ultra in 148 different countries as of Dec 2 according to the Country Marathon Club that keeps track of records. In 1979 Brent ran his best marathon (2:45:50) in Boston. By 1999 he had completed a marathon on all seven continents. At least 53 of the 148 were ultras including six 150 mile stage races. He ran his first marathon June 30, 1968 in 3:53 at the Whitewater Marathon in Wisconsin.

Dame Dibaba talks about club running after his escape from prison in Ethiopia, the sea crossing from Libya, and the Calais camp known as the Jungle. That was more than two years ago, and since then, Dame Dibaba, a refugee from the Oromia region of Ethiopia, has been, in his words, a “ghost†in this country, albeit a ghost that runs like the wind. The current course record holder for the Beckenham parkrun (15 min 58 sec) looks stricken as he recalls the most challenging run of his life.

MBR BEST 100: Bank of America Chicago Marathon will welcome thousands of runners from over 100 countries again on Oct 7, 2018. That's in 298 days but it is already sold out. You have to plan ahead to get into these world class races. Last year's race was amazing. Galen Rupp won in 2:09:20 and 60-year-old Brian Pitcher ran 2:42:44. Plus there were so many other top times. The race’s iconic course takes runners through 29 vibrant neighborhoods on an architectural and cultural tour of Chicago.

Keith Pierce, 37, of McKinney, Tex., led from start-to-finish on a brisk, sunny morning at the 2017 BMW Dallas Marathon, breaking the tape with a winning marathon time of 2:27:16. In successfully defending his title, Pierce – also the winner of the 2016 BMW Dallas Marathon – ran more than two minutes faster than his 2016 winning time in Dallas.

Boston Marathon title sponsor, John Hancock announced today that New York Marathon winner and four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan will be running the 2018 Boston Marathon. She had said she might retire after winning New York but she had also said "Boston's always in my heart." She has run Boston three times. Her best performance came in 2013 when she placed fourth. The competition is going to be tough. As already reported defending champion Edna Kiplagat will be on the starting line too.

MBR BEST 100: Both the men’s and women’s course records came tumbling down at the 45th Honolulu Marathon Sunday morning when Lawrence Cherono and Brigid Kosgei broke the finish line tape in Kapiolani Park in 2:08:26 and 2:22:14, respectively. Improbably, the Kenyan duo demolished the previous race records by a combined six minutes and 17 seconds, and each athlete earned $50,000 in prize money and incentive bonuses.

The best running shoe is whichever one feels the best, right? But shoe companies are claiming that certain shoes—especially Nike’s $250 Zoom Vaporfly 4%— can save you energy and can actually make you faster. We finally have data to answer that question. It looks like Nike isn’t bluffing. Alex Hutchinson reports at Outside Online: Results show that runners needed less oxygen, which means they weren’t working as hard. That translates to saving energy that you can use to push yourself to go faster.

Shalane Flanagan was voted the 2017 New York Road Runners Pro Performer of the Year by the public and the media after becoming the first American woman to win the TCS New York City Marathon open division in 40 years in November. MBR FAST FACT: On October 16, 2011, Fauja Singh became the first 100-year-old to finish a marathon, completing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 8:11:06. He still runs for pleasure and charity at age 106. Singh says running has given him purpose and a sense of peace. "Why worry about these small, small things? I don't stress. You never hear of anyone dying of happiness."

Chandler Self was the first woman to cross the finish line at the 2017 Dallas Marathon, clocking 2:53:55. Self staggered, and at some points fell, throughout the final 50m of the Texas road race. High school runner Ariana Luterman, who was running in the event’s relay, aided Self over the final stages of the race and ultimately across the line.

Nick Symmonds, the IAAF World Championships 800m silver medalist, ran the Honolulu marathon today. This is what he posted afterwards, "The problem with having a 3:00:35 marathon PB is I now have to run another one to break 3. Looking for a spring marathon with a very flat course. Any suggestions?" MBR FAST FACT: Rich Karlgaard became an editorial assistant at Runner's World in 1977 after graduating from Stanford, his first real job. Rich was a track and cross-country star in school. In 1998, he was named publisher of Forbes magazine. In 2004, he wrote his first book, Life 2.0. The book made The Wall Street Journal business bestseller list. Recently Rich and RW founder Bob Anderson ran into each other in their hometown of Los Altos, CA at this little Mexican restaurant 40 years later.

MBR FAST FACT: The Fastest Marathon ever run by a United States President is 3:44:52. Former president George W Bush ran that time in 1993 at the Houston Marathon. During his time in office he ran regularly and in fact it was reported that he could run three miles at six minute pace. A healthy workforce is a more productive work force.†The 2018 Houston Marathon will be held January 14.

24-year-old Rahma Tusa of Ethiopia won the Guangzhou Marathon today. She built up a comfortable lead after midway and trimmed more than two minutes from her personal best to wrap up the third marathon title of her career in 2:25:12.
Tusa’s winning mark also beat the course record of 2:26:46 set by Mulu Seboka back when the race was started 2012.
It was Tusa’s third marathon in 2017. She arrvied in Guangzhou with high spirits after successfully defending her title at the Rome Marathon in April.

When Lauren Totten finished CIM last Sunday in Sacramento in 2:35:33, she and her husband Seth broke an apparent American record.
Combined, the Tottens ran the CIM in 4:55, breaking a record believed to have been set by Tim and Lindsay Tollefson in 2013 as the fastest aggregate marathon time for an American married couple in the same race on the same day. Great performances but far short of the world best which is 4:27:05 set in Paris 4/9/17.

More people than ever before tuned in last summer to watch the world’s top athletes compete for the Diamond Trophy, as 2017 saw increased viewing figures across the world. 2017 saw a total of 282 million viewers across the 14 meetings, an increase of around 60 million on the previous year. Many of those were watching in China, where 23 million more viewers tuned in compared to 2016. In Europe and the USA there was an also an increase, with nine million more Americans watching the IAAF meets.

Seven months ago, Sean English was a track and cross country star, but his dreams of running in college vanished when he was hurt helping crash victims on I-96 in Detroit. Sean and his parents watched a car full of teenagers flip over on I-96, but when they raced to help, another car hit him at the scene. Part of Sean's right leg had to be amputated. "I knew he would run again," his mother said. "I would like to do a bunch of road races, marathons, you name it," Sean said. "Anything running."

12-year-old Caleb Hymans from Annandale, VA not only finished first overall at the Marine Corps Turkey Trot November 18 but set a new 10K world record for 12-year-olds. According to ARRS, Caleb’s finish time (35:34) topped his previous record by 59 seconds. His first appearance in the record books was when he set the then-5K record of 18:47 for 9-year-old males. He also ran 37:45 10K at age 11 another world best. His first race was at a Turkey Trot when he was five.

Course record-holder Mulu Seboka of Ethiopia will return to the Guangzhou Marathon in a bid to regain her title from five years ago. Seboka clocked 2:26:46 to take a convincing victory at the inaugural edition of the race back in 2012 and her course record has stood untouched ever since. The 33-year-old, who set a personal best of 2:21:56 when finishing sixth in Dubai in 2015, is still seen as one of the favourites.

Ted Corbitt Classic 15K is this weekend in Central Park. A distance running pioneer and the co-founder and first president of NYRR, Ted Corbitt had a unique dedication to the sport and a passion for excellence that carried over into every aspect of his life. He completed an incredible lifetime total of 223 marathons and ultramarathons. His training, which routinely included 200-mile weeks, was more than just preparation for racing. It was a lifestyle that has inspired many who came after him.

Damon has long been a fan of the Boston Marathon. “Some of my most vivid childhood sports memories took form … by the side of the road near the fire station on Commonwealth Avenue in Newton." Does smiling while sweating make your efforts feel easier. In May, Eliud Kipchoge, Kenyan marathon runner, periodically grinned through the final miles of his fastest-ever marathon, which he completed in 2 hours 25 seconds; afterward, he said that he had hoped that the smiling would ease him to the finish line. But there has been little solid scientific evidence to support this idea. The key may be to grin sincerely near a race’s end, but in 30-second bursts, rather than continuously. NY Times

Roberta Groner, a 39-year-old full-time nurse and mother of three, took nearly six minutes off her personal best to finish second in 2:30:38. It was an astonishing performance, given her experience in running until that point, at the California International Marathon on Sunday. It’s been just six years since Groner ran her first marathon, and she’s lowered her time by 42 minutes. She first ran 3:12:42 at the 2011 Chicago Marathon. Groner took a 10-year break from the sport from 1999 to 2009.

Yuta Shitara (Honda) ended 2017 on a high note, beating three-time defending champion Jeremiah Thuku Karemi (Toyota Kyushu) to win the 42nd Kumamoto Kosa 10-Miler on Sunday (Dec 3). Shitara broke the tape in 45:58, only the fourth Japanese man to go under 45 minutes. Karemi was well under last year's winning time but nowhere close to catching Shitara, finishing 2nd in 46:10 and Inoue only 2 seconds behind him. 11 runners finished under 47 minutes. Time for 88th place was 49:18.

A total of 10 marathons are scheduled to be hosted across China this weekend when more than 100,000 runners are estimated to be competing according to China's athletic association. Over 400 marathons are on the scheduled in 2017, China hosted 328 marathons in 2016 with 2.8 million runners, up from 22 marathons in 2011, the country's athletic association reported.

One of Thailand’s leading rock stars, “Toon†Khongmalai—who sings for the popular Thai rock band Bodyslam—has been running across Thailand, raising money for hospitals that give care to the poor. This 2,191 km, 55-day run started on November 1 at Betong, and his destination is the border town of Mae Sai, Thailand’s northernmost point on the Thai-Myanmar border. His pace is impressive, running nearly a marathon every day, and taking only one rest day for every 4 days on the move.

This year, 27,000 people have entered the race, 14,000 Japanese runners and 16 of the world's fastest elite runners will compete for the grand prize. In addition to the Marathon, there are also two other races coinciding with Marathon Weekend. The Kalakaua Merrie Mile is a fun one-mile race around Waikiki on Saturday, December 9 and the Start to The Park is a new 10K race that starts at the same time and place as the full marathon and finishes 10 kilometers into the course at Kapiolani Park.

5025 participants donned in 5-piece Santa suits broke the World Record for Largest Santa Run during the Great Outdoor Provision Co. Surf-n-Santa 5 Miler presented by Bon Secours In Motion in Virginia Beach December 17, 2016. In order to count toward breaking the world record, they had to be wearing all five pieces: red pants, a red jacket, hat, black belt, and white beard. This year's event is set for Dec 16. All participants will receive the Santa Suit.

Joe Gray and Dani Moreno captured the 10th annual XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch this morning. Dani Moreno of Santa Barbara, California, won the women's race in 1:39:22, a little over a minute ahead of runner up, Giselle Slotboom of the Netherlands (currently training in Salt Lake City, Utah), who finished in 1:40:30. Teyler Adelsberger from Columbia, Missouri, was third in 1:43:46. Joe Gray won in 1:18:36 nearly a minute ahead of Sage Canaday.

Moen ran 2:05:48 to win the Fukuoka Marathon on Sunday. The quickest time, previously achieved by a non-African male on a record-eligible course was 2:06:05 by Ronaldo da Costa in 1998 — then a world record. Ryan Hall ran 2:04:58 at the Boston Marathon in 2011, but the course was deemed ineligible for record-keeping. Runners live for the day where everything clicks. PR's are set on those days. Norway's Moen had one of those days on Sunday. He beat his PR by four minutes and 19 seconds.

In sunny, windless and cool conditions, Sara Hall of Redding, California won the 2017 USATF Marathon title at the California International Marathon on Sunday. Hall, 34, bounced back from a 2:27:21 personal best performance at the BMW Frankfurt Marathon five weeks ago, to run away from the field here in 2:28:10, the second fastest winning time in the 35-year history of the race.

Pamela Rotich’s 2:38:31 triumph at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon and her Compatriot Cosmas Kimutai made it a Kenyan double – the seventh in the past eight editions – by winning the men’s race in 2:22:48 in what was his first race for three years. The race, despite starting at 4:30am, still couldn’t escape the 82 degree heat, so times were understandably affected, as is often the case in Singapore.

After breaking away from pre-race favorite Bedan Karoki at 36 kilometres, Norway’s Sondre Nordstad Moen went on to win the Fukuoka Marathon on Sunday (3), clocking a European record of 2:05:48. “I was confident that I could run 2:07, and on a good day perhaps even 2:06, but I did not expect 2:05,†said Moen. Previous record (2:06:10) was set 3/20/2016 by Ozbilen of Turkey. The 26-year-old entered the race with a personal best of 2:10:07, set earlier this year at the Hannover Marathon.

A winner has been selected in the IAAF’s contest for the best photograph of the year taken by a fan photographer.
Fan photographers were invited to submit their own entries via social media.
The winning entry came from Katie Dunlop, whose photograph of Callum Hawkins at the Great Edinburgh X-Country caught the eye of the panellists. “This is amazing, thank you so much to the IAAF and the judges; I’m a bit shocked!†said Dunlop, “I always enjoy watching the Great Edinburgh XC meet."
