The streets of southern Spain witnessed a thrilling morning of elite road racing as the TotalEnergies Media Maratón Ciudad de Málaga delivered another spectacular edition, reaffirming its reputation as one of Europe’s fastest and most competitive half marathons.

Under near-perfect racing conditions in the vibrant coastal city of Málaga, top international athletes produced remarkable performances, highlighted by a commanding victory in the men’s race and a historic national record in the women’s competition.

Kenya’s Vincent Kipkorir emerged as the dominant force in the men’s race, surging away from the field to secure victory in an impressive 59:30. Demonstrating both patience and strength, Kipkorir controlled the latter stages of the race, crossing the finish line comfortably ahead of his challengers.

Compatriot Shadrack Musyoka claimed second place after a solid run that saw him stop the clock at 1:00:16, while fellow Kenyan Mathew Kipruto completed the podium in 1:01:29, underlining Kenya’s continued dominance in global road racing.

The women’s race was equally captivating, featuring a fierce contest that produced one of the most memorable performances of the event. Uganda’s Esther Chebet delivered a superb run to claim victory in 1:06:33, holding off strong international competition to take the top spot.

Just seconds behind her was Slovenia’s rising star Klara Lukan, who finished second in 1:06:43. Despite narrowly missing the win, Lukan achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new Slovenian national record, while also recording a personal best—an achievement that marks a significant moment in her career and in Slovenian distance running.

Kenya’s Winnie Jepkosgei rounded out the women’s podium with a strong performance, finishing third in 1:08:02.

Known for its fast, flat course and ideal racing atmosphere, the Málaga Half Marathon continues to attract elite athletes eager to chase quick times. This year’s edition once again delivered high-level competition and unforgettable performances, proving why the race has earned its place among Europe’s premier road running events.

With commanding victories, a national record, and impressive depth across both fields, the 2026 TotalEnergies Media Maratón Ciudad de Málaga added another brilliant chapter to its growing legacy on the international road racing calendar.

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has unveiled a team of 20 athletes to represent the country at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games later this month.

Over 10,000 top athletes from around the world will take part in the Games slated for July 26 to August 11 in France.

Announcing the track and field squad, UAF President Dominic Otuchet said the team boosts experienced athletes who have what it takes to win medals for the country.

“We have athletes who have been proven and tested at the big stage,” said Otuchet.

World star Joshua Cheptegei who bagged a gold and silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 will lead Uganda’s team together with half-marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo. The duo will battle in the 5,000m and 10,000m final.

“After getting a bronze medal at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, my target is now to improve and win a gold medal. I know it will call for a lot of hard work to be able to achieve this and I am already working hard,” says Kiplimo.

Female athlete Peruth Chemutai who won a gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase will also be another medal hopeful for the Ugandan team.

The team has 10 male and 10 female athletes, with another two, Belinda Chemutai and Loice Chekwemoi, on the waiting list. Besides track and field athletes, Uganda will also have two swimmers, a cyclist and a female rower.

The 22-year-old Ugandan finished a fine second in Elgoibar last Sunday and should be regarded as one of the main favorites at this weekend’s 9135m event. Kenya’s current world 3000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, who came third in Elgoibar some 17 seconds behind Chesang, will arguably be the Ugandan’s fiercest opponent alongside Ethiopia’s Gete Alemayehu, the 20-year-old who won the Houilles 10km on 30 December in a massive lifetime best of 31:12.

Turkey’s Yasmine Can had a below-par performance in Elgoibar where she had to settle for a distant fourth but the triple European cross country champion should be eager to bounce back and be in the hunt for the podium places.

Spain’s Trihas Gebre, Uganda’s Esther Chebet and Kenya’s Hellen Ekarare Lobun will be aiming for a top-five finish. The Ethiopian-born Spaniard is fresh from a national 10km record of 31:39 in Valencia last Sunday while Chebet clocked 31:53 at Madrid’s New Year’s eve race where Gebre clocked 31:40. As for Lobun, she was a creditable fifth over 5000m at last summer’s World U20 Championships and boasts a 15:16:53 PB. The 19-year-old Kenyan will be making her first outing of the year.
