Wet and windy conditions prevailed today at the Harriers Pioneer 8K, the opening event of the Vancouver Island Race Series. The 39th running of the event had over 500 registrations, and was run on a new out-and-back rural course in North Saanich, B.C. For the second consecutive year, Luc Bruchet and Rachel Cliff won, defending their titles in what is historically Canadaâ€™s first notable road race of the calendar year. Hoka One One has landed one of Canadaâ€™s greatest menâ€™s distance runners. The shoe company signed Cam Levins, formerly the national record holder in the 10,000m, to a sponsorship deal, it was announced on Monday. He is slated to make his professional debut for Hoka One One at the 2018 Houston Half-Marathon on Jan. 14. The two-time Olympian and second-fastest marathoner in Canadian history was forced to cut his yearly training regime to half of its regular volume, as he dealt with a peculiar ailment. A Hamilton resident and New Balance athlete, he had been chasing Jerome Draytonâ€™s elusive Canadian marathon record of 2:10:09 for quite some time and, with a personal best of 2:10:28, a record-breaking attempt in 2017 was in no way far-fetched. Horace Ashenfelter III, won a gold medal in a stunning upset at the 1952 Olympics, died on Saturday in West Orange, N.J. He was 94. At the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, Ashenfelter, then an FBI agent, surpassed heavily-favored Soviet runner Vladimir Kazantsev in the final lap, claiming the gold medal and setting a world record with a time of 8:45.4. That year, he received the Sullivan Award as the USA's outstanding amateur athlete and represented the U.S. again at the 1956 Olympics. (01/08/2018) ⚡AMP
World 1500m silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot and fellow Kenyan Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi took top honours at the 41st Antrim International Cross Country in Greenmount on Saturday. On a day of calm and mild weather conditions at Greenmount's College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Cheruiyot improved upon his third-place finish from 2016. 28-year-old Nick Hilton from Tucson, Arizona won the 25th Annual Walt Disney World Marathon in a time of 2:17:52. Hilton becames the first American to win the race since 2004, ending a streak held by the Brazilian runners.
Hilton is also only the fourth American to ever win the marathon.
â€œI feel amazing,â€ says Hilton. â€œThe marathon has been a mixed bag for me and this means a lot to me." Brazilian Giovanna Martins, 35, was first female to finish. Her time was 2:47:22.
Israel's Girmaw Amare was crowned as national champion after winning the 41st Sea of Galilee Tiberias marathon today in a time of 2:15.30 hours, an improvement of 1:50 minutes from his personal best and the sixth-best result ever recorded by an Israeli. Amareâ€™s result is especially impressive as he ran by himself for almost half of the marathon. Ethiopiaâ€™s Fatuma Sado overcame heavy rain and a stomach problem in the latter sages to win the Xiamen International Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label road race, this morning (2:26:41).
Sado, the 2013 winner and defending champion Meseret Mengistu were both considered the favorites in the women's race.
However, the 27-year-old reigning champion, who was also the fastest entrant (2:23:25) from her victory at the 2015 Paris Marathon, dropped out of the leading group soon after the start.
MBR FAST FACT: Canadaâ€™s Jacqueline Gareau led the women's 1980 Boston Marathon field for most of the race, only to find another runner, Rosie Ruiz, wearing the traditional victor's laurels when she crossed the finish line. Ruiz was later disqualified after it was determined she hadn't run the entire race, and Gareau was awarded the victory one week later. Switzer celebrates her 71st birthday today in Wellington, New Zealand, where she winters with her husband, runner and author Roger Robinson. She was a pioneer female marathoner in the 1960s, a sub-elite racer (with a personal best of 2:51) in the mid-1970s, and a tireless worldwide promoter of womenâ€™s running through the Avon global running circuit. 9 months ago, she became the first woman to complete marathons 50 years apart. You can buy a pair of micro-spikes, which strap onto the bottom of your running shoes, or you can turn an older pair of running shoes into â€œscrew shoesâ€ by screwing some sheet metal screws with hex heads into the bottom of your shoes,either Â¼â€, Â½â€, or â…œâ€ screws.
You could also consider swapping your road-running shoes for trail shoes, which has better traction on slippery terrain.
MBR FAST FACT: Joggling is the term used for running while juggling. In October 2016, 44-year-old Michal Kapral ran the Chicago Marathon while juggling, managing to do so without dropping any balls, and finishing with a time of 2 hours and 55 minutes. It was his eighth joggling marathon and first time completing one without a single drop. Predictably, the two most populous states, California and Texas, took the top two spots on the list. Defending champion Meseret Mengistu and 2013 winner Fatuma Sado of Ethiopia will both chasing a second title at the 16th edition of the Xiamen International Marathon. The 27-year-old Mengistu is the fastest woman on paper with a personal best of 2:23:25 achieved when she won the 2015 Paris Marathon. 30-year-old Allie Kieffer was one of the major surprises at the 2017 NYC Marathon, breaking 2:30 for the first time and finishing fifth overall. Her 2:29:39 was a staggering improvement. Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya will focus on winning in London Marathon and not setting a world record. The Kenyan missed out on breaking his compatriot Dennis Kimetto's 2:02:57 mark in Berlin last September owing to heavy rains and winds, but promised to return stronger and try to break the record in future. The Little Rock Marathon has unveiled its 2018 finisher medals. The marathon has long been known for its epic race bling, and the race has certainly kept up the tradition for its 16th year. He was attempting to break the world record of 75 sub 2:20 marathons he co-held with Doug Kurtis. He hit the half way point in 1:10:29. The temperature was 4 degrees. â€œWhen I saw the time I thought itâ€™s not happening today,â€ said Kawauchi. But he does not give up and he kept pushing to finish in 2:18:59 on the certified course. Northern Irelandâ€™s Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) recorded a brilliant 29:06 (14th place), a new 10k road personal best, at the San Silvestre Vallecana 10k road race in Madrid (Spain) on New Yearâ€™s Eve. He competed at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, finishing the marathon in 32nd position, in a time of 2.16.24. He was the first Irishman home. Dave Proctor is not done, even after running more than 358K in the span of 48 hours. The feat is a 48-hour Canadian record (previous mark of 355.8K), according to Proctor, who entered the race as the 24-hour Canadian record holder. Proctor hit 358.16K with 10 minutes to go before the 48-hour mark on Saturday so his new record will likely be more than 358K. With a select group of professional athletes leading the pack of nearly 4,000 runners, Reid Buchanan became the first to complete four miles in the new year by breaking the tape in 19:08. That's the premise of Running on Air, a new book by Budd Coates. He's a four-time qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

Pacers Running store owner Chris Farley was convinced his streak was over. Every year since 1999, Farley had run a marathon or the distance of 26.2 miles in under three hours, but when he crossed the finish line on a windy morning at the Philadelphia Marathon on Nov. 19, his watch read 3:01:04. But on Friday Farley tired one more time and he did it. He completed a certified marathon course at Hains Point in 2:52:53 in front of dozens of friends and family members. His streak continues. For the menâ€™s half marathon 2017 was the best year ever - three sub-59-minute runners and another 20+ running sub-60s.
The Copenhagen Half Marathon has quickly developed into one of the worldâ€™s highest quality half. This year it provided all the sub-59-minute performances as the top three â€“ Cheroben, Okambo and Oloitiptip â€“ ran 58:40, 59:48 and 58:51 respectively to move to third, eighth and 10th on the world all-time list. MBR UNIQUE RACE: There isnâ€™t anything complicated about running with snowshoes. You just have to remember to pick up your feet.
The challenge, as with any winter running, is keeping yourself dry - because wet clothes can kill you.Beyond the normal challenge of sweating from all the extra exertion, racing snowshoes tend to throw around a lot of snow. In loose snow, it looks like a snow squall is following you when you run. Half of it falls on you, so you should wear clothing that sheds the snow. (12/29/2017) ⚡AMP

In the late 1960s he joined NYRR, which was a small club. He co-founded the New York City Marathon in 1970 as a four-lap tour of Central Park. Bob Anderson started running in 1962. In 1963 he ran the 880 at the AAU Junior Olympics and finished first in 2:08.5. He was hooked. By 1964 he wanted to run the Boston Marathon but he didnâ€™t know how to train. He started writing runners asking for advice. With all this info he decided to start a magazine in Oct 1965. It was a good year for UK marathoners. Here are some stats: 17 men broke 2:20 and 43 men broke 2:25 (best since 1995), which is up from 15 and 38 in 2016. Japanâ€™s Yuta Shitara has the potential to run 2:06:30, based on his 1:00:17 half. Moenâ€™s disciplined pacing at Fukuoka is a role model for Shitara. Based on Shitaraâ€™s two marathons to date thereâ€™s no sign that he intends to approach the marathon with the same maturity and professionalism as Moen, but if he did he would be Japanâ€™s best chance of seeing its 2:06:16 national record broken.
