Kiplimo Set to Defend Title in Star-Studded NN Zevenheuvelenloop Race

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo returns to the NN Zevenheuvelenloop (Seven Hills Run) on Sunday, November 17, aiming to defend his title in the 15km race, which last year saw him match the world record.

Kiplimo, one of the brightest talents in distance running, will be joined by an elite lineup, including his half-brother, reigning marathon world champion Victor Kiplangat, adding extra competition to an already loaded field.

Other big names set for NN Zevenheuvelenloop Race

Great Britain’s Marc Scott, Belgian marathoner Koen Naert, and Nils Voigt of Germany are also set to compete, promising a highly contested race on the rolling hills of Nijmegen. A strong domestic lineup looks to challenge the Dutch record, with national runners such as Mike Foppen, Richard Douma, Filmon Tesfu, Khalid Choukoud, Frank Futselaar, and Gianluca Assorgia joining the field.

NN Zevenheuvelenloop Race women’s race will be hot

In the women’s race, Norway’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal leads a strong roster and will face Ethiopia’s Mizan Elam and Ireland’s Fionnula McCormack. Dutch hopefuls Diane van Es, Maureen Koster, and Jill Holterman will also race alongside Rachel Klamer, a seasoned Olympic triathlete representing the Netherlands.

The NN Zevenheuvelenloop’s hilly course and competitive field promise an exciting race as top international and local athletes chase records and titles in one of the Netherlands’ premier running events.

Strong group of Dutch riders at Zevenheuvelenloop will be on the hunt for the Dutch record on the 15 kilometers

On Sunday November 17, a strong group of Dutch runners will be on the hunt for the Dutch record on the 15 kilometers. Mike Foppen from Nijmegen is going for the record in his hometown and will face competition from Richard Douma, Filmon Tesfu, Khalid Choukoud, Frank Futselaar and Gianluca Assorgia, among others. In the women's race, Olympians Diane van Es and Maureen Koster will start.

Battle for the Dutch recordMike Foppen and Richard Douma are the runners with the fastest times on the 15 kilometers behind their name. Foppen has a best time of 43:21 and Douma of 43:18. Filmon Tesfu starts as one of the favorites after his successful marathon debut in Amsterdam (2:10:58). Last year he trumped Foppen in the final sprint and finished as the fastest Dutchman. Khalid Choukoud is the Dutch record holder with his time of 43:13 from 2019 and is also competing. The Dutch men will face competition from Belgium from Koen Naert (personal best 43:37) and from Germany from Nils Voigt (personal best 43:18).

Four Dutch Olympians in the women'srace Training mates Diane van Es and Maureen Koster are competing for the title of fastest Dutchwoman. Van Es competed in the 10,000 meters in Paris and finished sixteenth at that distance. Two months before the Olympics, the 25-year-old runner won silver on the longest track distance at the European Athletics Championships. In 2022, Diane van Es was the fastest Dutch rider at the NN Zevenheuvelen in 47:57.

Maureen Koster also competed at the Olympics in Paris. She finished tenth in her heat in the 5,000 meters. In 2018, the 32-year-old athlete ran her best time on the 15 kilometers at the NN Zevenheuvelenloop: 49:04. Just like her teammate Van Es, Koster has a European Championship medal in her cabinet: silver in the 3,000 meters indoor in 2015.

In addition to Van Es and Koster, Olympians Jill Holterman and Rachel Klamer will also be at the start. Holterman ran the Tokyo Marathon in 2021. Klamer has competed in the triathlon for the past four Olympic Games. In Tokyo, she achieved her best result with a fourth place.

TheUgandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo defends his title at the NN Zevenheuvelenloop. Last year, the 23-year-old athlete equalled the world record in the 15 kilometres in Nijmegen. This year he will compete with his half-brother Victor Kiplangat, reigning world champion in the marathon. In the women's race, European half marathon champion Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal is on the start list.

The 15 kilometres of the 39th NN Zevenheuvelenloop are sold out with 28,000 participants. With more than 10,000 registrations, the 10th Night of the Seven Hills has a record number of registrations.Below are the start lists of the 39th NN Zevenheuvelenloop.

Grøvdal and Nordas win over 10km at the Hytteplanmila

Three-time European cross country champion Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal dominated the women’s 10km at the Hytteplanmila in Hole on Saturday (19).

Grøvdal won the women’s race - and the Norwegian 10km title with it - in 31:12, winning by over two minutes from 17-year-old super-talent Wilma Anna Bekkemoen Torbiörnss whose time of 33:29 was a Norwegian U18 best.

The Hytteplanmila is Grøvdal's traditional opening race to her winter campaign and she has won in Hole no less than 10 times since 2012. It was on this course that she famously smashed Ingrid Kristiansen’s 31-year-old Norwegian 10km record by 27 seconds with a run of 30:32 which is currently fifth the time on the European all-time list and remains the course record.

Grøvdal is likely to aim for a fourth successive senior title at the 2024 SPAR European Cross Country Championships in less than 50 days’ time in Antalya, Turkey but the Norwegians will also have a genuine medal hope in Bekkemoen Torbiörns in the U20 women’s race.

Bekkemoen Torbiörnss won bronze in the 1500m at the Banska Bystrica European Athletics U18 Championships and the teeanger concluded her season by clocking Norwegian U18 bests over 1500m (4:09.80) and 3000m (9:03.17).

In the men’s race, world 1500m bronze medalist Narve Gilje Nordas won in 28:24 - his four consecutive win - by four seconds from Sweden’s Suldan Hassan (28:28) and Per Svela (28:32).

Former European marathon record-holder Sondre Nordstad Moen was fifth in 28:48. 

Elsewhere on the roads…

Just over two months after finishing 26th in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Israel’s Maru Teferi finished a close third in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon in a lifetime best of 2:05:42, just behind Ethiopians Tsegay Getachew (2:05:38) and Boki Asefa (2:05:40).

Khalid Choukoud was the first Dutch finisher in 10th in 2:09:30 with Filmon Tesfu a creditable 13th on his marathon debut in 2:10:58.

In her last race of the season, 2022 European 10,000m silver medallist Eilish McColgan finished fourth in the New Delhi Half Marathon in high temperatures and humidity in 69:55. 

In conjunction with the Ljubljana Marathon, home favorite and 2019 European U20 5000m champion Klara Lukan impressively won the adjoining women's 10km in 31:49 by over two minutes.

Olympian Khalid Choukoud at the start of the Amsterdam marathon

Khalid Choukoud will be one of the big names at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday 20 October.

In recent years, the 38-year-old athlete has achieved great results in the autumn marathon. He won the national title in Amsterdam three times (2016, 2021 and 2022).

This summer, Choukoud did even more at the Olympic Games in Paris and Amsterdam will be his next marathon.

"The Amsterdam marathon is my favorite marathon," Khalid Choukoud said on the site of organization Le Champion. "That has to do with the organization and I ran my fastest times on Dutch soil in the last two years with 2.08 and 2.09."

In Paris last summer, Khalid Choukoud was unable to compete for the prizes. After more than 42 kilometers he clocked a time of 2:15; 37 and finished in 58th place.

In addition to Choukoud, Filmon Tesfu will also be behind the starting line in the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, October 20. The athlete from Den Helder recently became the first Dutchman to cross the finish line at the Dam tot Damloop. In Amsterdam, Tesfu will make his debut in the marathon.

On the other hand, Nienke Brinkman has canceled. The top athlete has not yet recovered sufficiently from her injury.

Abdi Nageeye won the NN CPC Loop Den Haag

Abdi Nageeye won the half marathon as part of the 48th NN CPC Run The Hague on Sunday, setting a Dutch record. The Netherland’s best road athlete won the opening classic half marathon race completing it in 1.00.21. In doing so, despite bowel and hamstring problems, he improved his own record by three seconds.

Ethiopian Charlie Kedir (1.00.48) and Israel’s Tadesse Getahon (1.01.01) joined Nageeye on the podium of honour. Khalid Choukoud, ambassador of the NN CPC Loop Den Haag in his hometown, finished in sixth place as the second Dutchman in 1.03.31. He was 25 seconds ahead of Tom Hendrikse.

Among the women, Susan Chembai from Kenya triumphed in a PR of 1.07.12. Lornah Kiplagat’s course record (1.06.56) remained out of reach. Germany’s Katharina Steinruck captured second place (1.09.58). Finishing third, was Dutch competitor Anna Luijten. The reigning national champion in the half and full marathon, improved her time, completing in 1.10.39. A year ago, she set her personal record of 1.12.12.

Nageeye was not the only athlete to run a Dutch record at the NN CPC Loop Rotterdam. So did 76-year-old Rietje Corstens from Bergen op Zoom. In the women 75+ category, she set a time of 1.59.22.

World class athletes Legese and Azimeraw at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon will welcome a strong elite field on Sunday, October 15. Ethiopian Birhanu Legese, who has run the fourth fastest time of all time with 2:02.48, will take a shot at the course record of 2:03.39. Bernard Koech (2:04.09) and Lemi Berhanu (2:04.33) also choose Amsterdam for their fall marathon. Among the women, Degitu Azimeraw is aiming for a second victory as well as a course record. Former winner Azimeraw will face competition from, among others, Tiruye Mesfin.

The 28-year-old Birhanu Legese is an all-time marathon runner behind three absolute legends: Eliud Kipchoge, Kelvin Kiptum and Kenenisa Bekele. The Ethiopian won the Tokyo Marathon in 2019 and 2020. At the 2019 Berlin Marathon, he finished second in 2:02.48 behind Bekele. Amsterdam will be the fifth Platinum Label marathon at which Legese will start.

Besides Legese, there are more candidates for the win. For example, Bernard Koech has been on the podium in Amsterdam before, when he finished second behind Tamirat Tola (the current course record holder) in 2021. Koech recorded the fourth fastest time this year in Hamburg last April: 2:04.09.

Koech will also take his training partner Kennedy Kimutai to Amsterdam, from whom an interesting debut is expected. With a personal best of 58.28, he already ran a very strong half marathon once (Valencia, 2021).

With Lemi Berhanu (2:04.33), Asrar Hiryden (2:04.43), Cybrian Kotut (2:04.47), Barselius Kipyego (2:04.48) and Abdisa Tola (2:05.42), the younger brother of Tamirat Tola, also at the start, it promises to be an exciting race.

For three editions in a row now, the women's course record has been broken. Since last year, the current course record of 2:17.20 is held by the Ethiopian Almaz Ayana. Degitu Azimeraw has fond memories of her debut marathon in Amsterdam: she raced to 2:19.26 in 2019. A time she tightened to 2:17.58 at the TCS London Marathon in 2021. Next month, the 24-year-old runner will return to the race circuit after her pregnancy.

With her best time, Tiruye Mesfin is not much inferior to her compatriot. The Ethiopian ran a strong debut of 2:18.47 in Valencia last year and so could also be the first woman to enter the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, October 15.

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is holder of the Platinum Label of the World Athletics, which makes the marathon attractive for the fastest long distance athletes in the world. The Platinum Label guarantees a fast course, with a good and tightly organized race. Legese, Azimeraw and Koech, among others, also have the Platinum Label status themselves. Their participation not only ensures an attractive race, but also further sustainability of the event.

Strong Dutch field

Organizer Le Champion previously announced that Nienke Brinkman, Khalid Choukoud, Richard Douma, Roy Hoornweg, Stan Niesten, Luuk Maas, Anne Luijten and Jill Holterman will be at the start. Lucas Nieuwenboer (second Dutchman in Amsterdam last year) and Roel Wijmenga have been added to the list. A strong group is being built around these top athletes so that they can aim for fast times and Olympic limits.

Kenyan Brian Kiptoo wins CPC Loop Den Haag in windy conditions

Tens of thousands of runners took part in the city's largest running event. Omroep West reported on the CPC Loop all day long.

The 47th NN CPC Loop Den Haag was won by Kenyan Brian Kiptoo (1.00.53), but the most remarkable performance was by Nienke Brinkman. The Dutch runner  triumphed among the women, running the half marathon in a personal record of 1.07.44  despite the  windy conditions.

In the men’s event, Brian Kiptoo shook off compatriot Moses Kiptoo (1.00.55) and Albert Rop (Bahrain, 1.01.05) in the closing stages. Khalid Choukoud finished as the best Dutchman: fourth in 1.02.55. Choukoud, this year’s ambassador for the NN CPC Run The Hague , had been suffering from a bad cold for the past week but was satisfied with his performance “at 85 per cent of my ability”.

On the women’s podium,  Brinkman was flanked by Rosalinda Jepketer (Bahrain, 1.08.40) and Kenya’s Pauline Esikon (1.08.47).

Three global title winners ready to clash in Amsterdam

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday (16) will bring together three winners of global titles. Almaz Ayana and Genzebe Dibaba will be making their marathon debuts at the World Athletics Elite Platinum Label road race, while 2017 world champion Rose Chelimo is also in the field.

The incredibly deep men’s field, meanwhile, includes nine men with PBs faster than 2:06, led by 2016 Boston Marathon champion Lemi Berhanu.

Ayana and Dibaba, who won the world 5000m and 1500m titles respectively back in 2015, have battled injuries in recent years but have still managed to make a promising transition to the roads. Ayana, the 2016 Olympic 10,000m champion, clocked 1:07:12 on her half marathon debut when winning in New Delhi in 2017. And since returning this year after a three-year break, she has placed fifth in Madrid in 1:08:22 and third at the Great North Run in 1:07:10.

Dibaba, meanwhile, hasn’t raced on the roads since 2020, but her performances then were impressive. The world 1500m record-holder won the Valencia Half Marathon on her debut at the distance in 1:05:18, then three weeks later won over 5km in Barcelona.

The Ethiopian duo have never raced one another on the roads, but they have clashed 12 times on the track. Dibaba has the upper hand, 8-4, but Ayana won their more significant duels, including the 2015 World Championships, 2015 Diamond League Final, and 2014 African Championships.

The marathon is another beast entirely, though, and experience can count for a lot. Chelimo has plenty of experience on the roads, having won 2017 world gold and 2019 world silver, but the 33-year-old from Bahrain has always been more of a championship performer than a big city marathon runner. Her most recent marathon was in Rotterdam earlier this year, where she placed 19th in 2:44:22.

Celestine Chepchirchir is a late addition to the field, following her withdrawal from last week’s Chicago Marathon. The Kenyan set a PB of 2:20:10 in Seoul earlier this year, making her the fastest entrant for this weekend’s race.

Ayana and Dibaba aren’t the only notable marathon debutants lining up in Amsterdam. Their compatriot Tsehay Gemechu, the fourth-place finisher over 5000m at the 2019 World Championships, has a strong record at the half marathon and heads to the Dutch city in good form. A two-time winner in New Delhi and Lisbon, Gemechu recently reduced her half marathon PB to 1:05:01 when finishing second to Yalemzerf Yehualaw in Antrim.

Fellow Ethiopian Azmera Gebru will be returning to Amsterdam, following her third-place finishes there in 2018 and 2019. Compatriot Gebeyanesh Ayele also returns, following her fourth-place finish last year, while Sintayehu Tilahun could be one to watch, following her recent PBs over the half marathon (1:07:41) and marathon (2:22:19).

After nine successive men’s victories in Amsterdam, Kenya’s winning streak came to an end last year. But Cybrian Kotut hopes to kick-start the trend on Sunday.

The 30-year-old has won his past three marathons, his most recent victory coming in April in Hamburg, where he set a lifetime best of 2:04:47. The Kenyan challenge is strengthened by the likes of Titus Kipruto, who won this year’s Milan Marathon in a PB of 2:05:05, Norbert Kigen, runner-up in Amsterdam in 2017 and winner in Prague earlier this year, and Laban Korir, who will be making his sixth appearance in Amsterdam.

But 2016 Boston Marathon champion Lemi Berhanu leads a strong Ethiopian contingent. Berhanu’s PB of 2:04:33 dates back to 2016, but his runner-up place in Boston last year shows he is still competitive.

He will be joined on the startline by compatriots Tsegaye Getachew, winner in Riyadh earlier this year and owner of a 2:05:11 PB, Adeladlew Mamo, who ran 2:05:12 on his marathon debut earlier this year, and 2:05:52 performer Adugna Takele.

Other contenders in the field include Eritrea’s Afewerki Berhane, Japan’s Shuho Dairokuno, and marathon debutant Victor Chumo.

Ethiopians Dibaba and Ayana set for marathon debuts

Ethiopia’s world record-breaking duo step into the unknown by tackling 26.2 miles in Amsterdam on Sunday

Genzebe Dibaba and Almaz Ayana have earned their reputation on the track as world record-breaking endurance runners but on Sunday the Ethiopian duo make their marathon debut in Amsterdam.

Dibaba, 31, holds the world record for 1500m with 3:50.07 set in Monaco in 2015 but has also broken world records indoors at the mile, two miles, 2000m, 3000m and 5000m.

The furthest she has ever raced in 13.1 miles but she clocked a fast 65:18 when winning in Valencia in 2020. It was the fastest half-marathon debut by a woman in history at the time, but she has raced very sparingly since.

Ayana has also not raced much lately but at her peak in 2016 she won the Olympic 10,000m title in a world record of 29:17.45. The 30-year-old’s half-marathon best is 67:10 when placing third at the Great North Run last month.

Speaking at the pre-event press conference at the city’s Vondelpark this week, Dibaba said: “I am going for a good time and a good position,” whereas Ayana looked similarly confident, saying simply: “I’m going to do well.”

The flat and fast course that winds around the Dutch city is known for producing fast times with the course records held by Tamirat Tola with 2:03:39 and Angela Tanui with 2:17:57 – both of which were set last year.

This year’s leading athletes in the men’s field are Cybrian Kotut and Lemi Berhanu. The former has won marathons in Hamburg, Paris and Florence and has a best of 2:04:47, whereas Berhanu run a best of 2:04:33 from Dubai in 2016 and he won the Boston Marathon in the same year.

The race for the Dutch title will be competitive, meanwhile, between Khalid Choukoud and Richard Douma in the men’s race and Jacelyn Gruppen and Eva van Zoonen for the women’s title.

The event is streamed on the event website and for UK viewers is being shown on Eurosport and Discovery+ channels.

Hassan and Bol among 45 Dutch athletes set for Tokyo

The Dutch team for the Tokyo Olympic Games has been announced, with double world champion Sifan Hassan named for three events.

The 28-year-old won world 1500m and 10,000m titles in Doha in 2019 and for Tokyo has been selected for both of those events as well as the 5000m, but may not decide to contest all three.

European indoor 400m champion Femke Bol has set 11 national records so far this season and has been selected to make her Olympic debut in the 400 hurdles, women’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m.

Two-time world champion Dafne Schippers is named for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, while world-leader Jorinde van Klinken’s discus selection is confirmed.

Keniaan Mutai wins 36th edition of the Eindhoven Marathon

The Kenyan Laban Mutai won the Eindhoven marathon on Sunday. He arrived solo at the Vestdijk in 2.06.40. Reuben Kerio came second, John Langat third.

Halfway the lead group came through in 1.02.37 much faster than the course director Marc Corstjens requested, 1.03.18.  At 30 kilometers they hit 1:29:15 and the 2.05 schedule was still firmly embraced. 

On the Oirschotsedijk behind the Herdgang it became clear that the Kenyans Laban Mutai, Reuben Kerio, Julius Tarus and John Langat would decide who would win the 36th edition of Marathon Eindhoven and that the course record was not yet feasible. Mutai released his countrymen one by one and improved his personal record from 2.07.38 to 2.06.40 in a windy Eindhoven.

Khalid Choukoud and Kim Dillen from Eindhoven were unable to run the Olympic limit at the marathon in Eindhoven. Dillen let the limit run early in the race, Choukoud finished in a time of 2.12.56. The limit for him was 2.11.30.

World champion marathon Rose Chelimo and European champion 10,000 meters Lonah Salpeter are set to compete for the podium at the 32nd edition of the CZ Tilburg Ten Miles

A lot of African athletes and a large number of Dutch athletes in duels for the places of honor at the Tilburg Ladies Run 10 K.

On the Dutch side, the winner of silver and bronze at the last European Championship Susan Krumins, marathon specialist Andrea Deelstra, Ruth van der Meijden, Jill Holterman and the Dutch talent Bo Ummels. Multiple Israeli champion Selamawit Dagnachew and two Kenyan athletes Mercy Njoroge and Lilian Jelagat are also to be expected in the front.

Former African champion Davis Kiplangat will lead this year's Singelloop Utrecht 10km road race

Former African junior 10,000m champion Davis Kiplangat will lead a huge East African contingent to this year's Singelloop Utrecht 10km road race in Netherlands on Oct. 7. Kiplangat, seventh at the World Indoor Championships in the 3,000m race, has failed to showcase the huge potential he exhibited as a junior and moving up to the road race will help him rekindle his career, which had been plighted with injuries. "I want to see how I will react to the road race in Netherlands," Kiplangat told Xinhua on Thursday. "I still want to excel in the track and I know the competition there is stiff. That is what makes me train hard and target victory in each race I take up." The former world junior silver medalist will be joined by Dutch favorite Khalid Choukoud, who has run 28:44 on the roads. Kenya's Albert Rop, who was 13th at the World Half-marathon Championships this year, will be a strong threat. Ugandan junior Kevin Kibet, Uganda's Joel Ayeko and Eritrea's Kokob Gebru will also be present for the 68th edition of this event, where the current world best was set in 2010. Another sub-29 runner from the home nation will be Roy Hoornweg. "This caliber of races has top athletes and I seek to run my own race and see how fast I can go. But Kiplangat will be a good motivation to me," said Rop. Commonwealth champion Joshua Cheptegei will be the runner to beat at the Dam tot Damloop 10 Miler

Joshua Cheptegei from Ugandan won silver last year at the 10,000 meters at the World Championships in London and this year was the fastest in the 5000 and 10,000 meters at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.  He will be going for gold at the up coming Dam tot Damloop ten mile race. Belgian's Bashir Abdi (silver 10,000 meters EK Berlin) and Ethiopian's Ayele Abshero are also candidates for the victory for the race that runs from Amsterdam to Zaandam.  The Dutch toppers Khalid Choukoud and Michel Butter are also running. In total, 46,000 runners will participate at the Dam tot Damloop race. Kenyan Rodgers Kwemoi wins CZ Tilburg Ten while Galen Rupp finishes third

The Kenyan Rodgers Kwemoi won the CZ Tilburg Ten Miler for the third time in a row.  He finished in a very fast time of 45:23. Second was the Kenyan Noah Kipkemboi in 45 minutes and 47 seconds. Third was two-time Olympic medalist Galen Rupp (USA) in 46:23. Khalid Choukoud was the first Dutchman to cross the finish line and scored a time of 47:52. Kwemoi and Kipkemboi walked together for a long time, with Kipkemboi leading up to 10 km. That went so hard that they were up to 9 km on the track of the best world performance ever.That is also the course record of Haile Gebrselassie in Tilburg with 44:23. The summer weather ensured that the pace could not stay that high. Kwemoi was the first to cross the finish line and is the first athlete to win the CZ Tilburg Ten Miles three times in a row. Two-time winner Rodgers Kwemoi from Kenya wants to win the Tilburg 10 Miler for the third tme

Rodgers Kwemoi returns to Tilburg and wants to be the first athlete to win this important race for the third time. He also thinks that if the circumstances are right, a time of a sub 45 minutes is possible. The former world champion 10,000 meters in the junior (2016) was recently the 10,000 meters winner in the Japanese Kobe. Last year he came in Tilburg clocking 45.03, in 2017 the world's best year at this distance.  The best time ever in Tilburg is 44.24 which is the world record set by  the legendary Haile Gebrselassie in 2005.   At the start there are several young emerging athletes such as Peter Kiprotich and Dominic Kiptarus (both from Kenya) who finished just above the hour at the CPC half marathon in the spring. Furthermore the talented Ugandan Abel Chebet.
