A few weeks ago, Missoula Marathon Director Trisha Drobek stopped by our offices to record a few on-air interviews regarding the upcoming race. Drobek provided some great advice on running the marathon that you can find below.
On a topic off-air, I mentioned to Drobek that I was running the Half Marathon (please hold your applause) with a good chance I'd finish dead last. Drobek chuckled and said I would be just fine at 28 compared to the 91-year-old competing in the race.
I HAD to track her down. Myrtle Miller at 91 years young is gearing up to participate in another Missoula Half Marathon. She began competing in the Half 12 years ago at the young age of 79 and has participated every year since, minus the COVID years.
"The year before I saw two of my friends doing that [participating in the Half Marathon] and I thought 'Oh I want to do that too'" said Miller. "I was closer to do this type of thing," Myrtle explained after she and her husband moved into town.
Miller won't be alone at this year's Missoula Half Marathon on June 30th. She'll be joined by her son Brian.
"My son's done it with me every year. He's a runner, in fact, he's running a 30K down in Idaho or someplace, but he's walked with me every year."
Some people will never compete in a race setting over their entire life but not Myrtle. She relishes the opportunity every spring to get back out there.
"It's just a goal I have each spring. I think 'Oh, I want to do this again,' so it's just kind of a goal, you know? I know the beginning of March we start training."
Myrtle is a pro at this point. She knows her training route and she knows what it will take to tackle the Half Marathon. This year Myrtle is looking to complete the the 13.1 miles in 4 hours and 30 minutes.
"I think I did it in 4:15:00 last year, so I think it will be 4:30:00 this year. Looking back, I've been keeping track, looking back over the years each year I'm about 15 [minutes] to half an hour slower.

more...The Missoula Half Marathon course was named one of the most beautiful in the world by USA Today!
Coming in at number 13, the Missoula course ranks among beautiful places which include Queenstown, New Zealand and Jasper, Canada.
"That half marathon course, you can't beat it... and you certainly don't have to train as long. So you can almost always commit to that half marathon," Missoula Marathon Director Trisha Drobeck said.
The half marathon runs alongside the scenic Bitterroot River before heading into downtown Missoula where runners are cheered on as they get closer to the finish line.
"I feel like the half marathon is maybe the younger sibling that doesn't get recognized as much as its older sibling, the signature marathon," Drobeck noted. "So, it's nice to see that. The half marathon... it is beautiful, and twice as many people do it as the marathon, so it's good to see it get a little recognition. It's well deserved."
This year's Missoula Marathon weekend runs from June 23 through June 25 with the half-marathon taking place on June 25. We'll have complete Missoula Marathon coverage right here on KPAX.

Missoula, MT. The Missoula Marathon, organized by the nonprofit Run Wild Missoula, has long been a leader in celebrating and welcoming the LBGTQ+ community. In 2023, race organizers will back up their commitment to gender inclusion by offering equal prize money for winners of male, female, and non-binary gender divisions. In addition, race organizers are actively working with local and LGBTQ+ community members to ensure the event is inclusive for runners of all gender identities and expressions.
The Missoula Marathon first offered the non-binary gender category in 2022, welcoming all participants to the start line on race day. For 2023, the race is offering prize money for all gender category winners as well as awards for all age group winners.
“Run Wild Missoula and the Missoula Marathon care deeply about all members of our running community,” said Trisha Drobeck, Race Director for the Missoula Marathon. “Our goal is to make all participants feel welcomed, safe, respected, and included.”
The 2023 Missoula Marathon race weekend will be held June 23-25 in Missoula, Montana. Events include the Missoula Marathon, Missoula Half Marathon, Tony Banovich 5k, and the free Missoula Marathon Beer Run. All events will be open to runners of all gender identities.
The Missoula Marathon is the brainchild of a group of local, dedicated members of Run Wild Missoula who want to share the area’s beauty and Missoula’s unique feel with runners from all over. more...June's arrival means the iconic Missoula Marathon's return is less than a month away.
The marathon will return for the first time in three years, a big deal for not only the running community but for all of Missoula.
As of June 1, there are only nine hotel properties left with rooms available for marathon weekend June 24-26, and most are priced at more than $700 per night.
According to race organizers, there's a lot of excitement for the race to come back.
The marathon sold out in January, which is unprecedented. While organizers capped the races to 1,000 marathon runners and 3,000 half marathon runners because of construction and unknowns with the pandemic, they're still expecting it to impact all of Missoula.
“I think just bringing those dollars back to the community, the downtown community especially, hotels, restaurants, retail, all of that, it’s so important," Trisha Drobeck, marathon director, said. "I think everybody’s going to be just so excited to have them.”
Over at Destination Missoula, they said it's the largest event held in town over the summer.
The pandemic showed just how much the town's driven by events, so they're celebrating its return.
“It’s kind of like when we have Cat-Griz games… or something like that," Barb Neilan, the executive director, said. "There are times when we’ve had those higher numbers, where we’ve funneled people down into Hamilton and up to Polson and places like that to find a place to stay.”
The marathon is set for Sunday, June 26 at 6 a.m., but organizers say to expect downtown to be busy for the entire week leading up to it.
During this final stretch, the marathon is still in need of volunteers.
It takes a total of about 800 volunteers to pull this off, from cleaning up the course, to giving out water and medals.

more...The Missoula Marathon is going virtual again this year.
Run Wild Missoula says they worked with the Missoula City-County Health Department to plan for an in-person event, but that just isn't possible right now.
Thousands of people travel from all over to participate in the races, and organizers don't want to risk spreading COVID-19.
After canceling for the first time ever -- and losing beloved race director Tony Banovich last year – Run Wild Missoula says they've had a difficult year, but are looking forward to offering the races in this format.
Registration opened in October, and Race Director Ashely Cossairt says people are ready to run in June. While she knows it won't be the same, this was the best decision.
"You really miss that human connection. Trying to host a, put together an event that has all these restrictions, and you can't really interact,” Cossairt told MTN News. “You can't cross the finish line and have somebody put that medal around your neck for you -- that's such a huge accomplishment and to not be able to experience that, it is sad."
The marathon typically brings in about $2 million to the local economy. But perks of going virtual mean anyone can participate from anywhere. Registration is open online for all the races here.
“We know marathon weekend brings thousands of people to downtown Missoula and is a significant draw for local hotels, restaurants, breweries, retailers, and other small businesses,” Cossairt stated. “However, the medical support staff we rely on will still be very busy serving our community in a significant way by providing treatment and vaccinations, and it would clearly be irresponsible for us to put our community at risk by hosting an event with this type of reach.”

more...We are disappointed to announce that we will be cancelling the Missoula Marathon weekend of events for 2020. This was a very challenging and difficult decision for the Run Wild Missoula Board of Directors and the Missoula Marathon race committee.
We take great pride in putting on our race and love being a part of the energy and excitement of race weekend.
We recognize the pride that our community takes in supporting the race and showing off Missoula to thousands of people from across the U.S. and from around the world.
We know that marathon weekend has a significant economic impact for our local hotels, restaurants, retailers, breweries and other small businesses.
Race weekend also provides the opportunity to showcase our amazing sponsors, and, finally, proceeds from the race allow us to make donations to local organizations who are doing great things in our community.
But we also recognize that we have a larger commitment to the Missoula community. In the current pandemic scenario, we are obligated to consider the health and safety of participants, volunteers, vendors, and community members.
Through stay at home orders and social distancing directives issued by the Governor’s office and local health departments, Montana has done an admirable job in managing the spread of the virus within our state. But, in discussions with our medical director and local health officials, there is serious concern about a potential spike in virus cases in Missoula in the days and weeks following the marathon should the race be held as scheduled.
Those same thoughts and concerns have also been expressed by others in the community, including our volunteers and race committee members. And, as we have now topped 1 million cases in the U.S., it is also reflective of the number of events in Montana and around the country that have been cancelled in May, June, July – and beyond.
Further, there is no timeline, in Montana or elsewhere, suggesting when large group events involving thousands of people such as races and concerts will be allowed to resume.
So, in consideration of the public health of the Missoula community and our participants, we realize that the only responsible action is to cancel the race for 2020.
This is not the outcome we envisioned for the 14th Annual Missoula Marathon. But we do intend to be back in June, 2021. Until then – Stay Active, Stay Healthy, Stay Safe, and Stay Strong.

more...Run Wild Missoula Race Director Tony Banovich, said with new information on the virus is coming in every day, and he and his staff are continuously evaluating how this will impact each aspect of the race.
The one change that has been made is there will no longer be a rate increase for those signing up after March 31.
Banovich said with the race approaching his team is meeting at the end of next week to make more definitive decisions on whether the race will go as scheduled, be postponed, or be canceled.
“It’s much more important that we do the correct things for the public, not only for our participants that are here, but our volunteers, you know everybody that’s involved," Banovich rold MTN News.
"We don’t want to create a bigger problem by bringing people here that we shouldn’t, so we’re really trying to be cognizant of that," he added.
Banovich sayd that if the race is rescheduled for later in the year, they’re looking at dates during the late summer or early fall months.

more...Last year, Cynthia Arnold shattered the world record for pushing a three-kid stroller through the Missoula Half Marathon. After that race, she decided to go for the full marathon record.
And this year, Arnold shattered that record, as well, going nearly an hour faster than the previous record-holder. Arnold crossed the line in 3 hours, 11 minutes, 53.7 seconds.
While it looks like Arnold pushes through the 26.2 miles with ease, she said it’s no small task.
“The kids are a year heavier, and I was feeling that. The stroller felt really heavy this year,” said Arnold, a Polson native.
Arnold said she wasn’t even hitting her pace times prior to the race, but on race day some new energy kicked in.
“The neat thing that happened this year was that there were a lot of spectators who knew what I had done last year and that I was going for the marathon this year, so there were a lot of people there saying things, personal things, actually addressing me about it, and that was a neat experience and really touching,” Arnold said.
On top of the 26 miles, Arnold said one of the biggest challenges was keeping the kids comfortable during the three-plus hours.
“They’re usually in the stroller more like one hour to one hour and 20 minutes, so it was a little over twice as long,” Arnold said. “So, that was going be a big challenge for us, which is where Margarite kind of came in. I thought she could read to them. They like I-spy, so she could initiate I-spy if they were kind of getting tired or bored.”
Three world records later and the kids getting bigger every year, Arnold said this was most likely the last competitive run she’ll do with the kids, but that doesn’t mean she’s done at the Missoula Marathon. She plans to run it by herself in 2020.

more...The 13th annual running of the Missoula Marathon had nearly 4,000 participants from all over the country came out to run either the full or half marathon.
"It's awesome, hometown for me, I went out and did Boston this year and that was really cool, definitely a whole different atmosphere," Messmer said. "But this is just as cool, coming across the bridge, there's nothing like that with all the people cheering and as you pass people in the half everybody's cheering for you, yelling your name. It's really cool."
Messmer won by nearly eight minutes, but the women's race was much closer. Kayla Brown of Edwardsville, IL. won the race by less than a minute.
"I kinda risked it a bit in the middle, so i wasn't sure if that was the right move at the time, it seemed right," Brown said. "I was a little nervous near the end but, you gotta take risks."
Polson native Cynthia Arnold broke the record for fastest marathon while pushing a stroller. The previous record was 4:06, and Arnold broke the record by nearly an hour with a time of 3:11, good for 8th place in the women's race.
"I'm happy, I'm glad, I think the kids had fun. I think it went really well." Arnold said. "The Missoula Marathon is beautiful and fun and it was a really good experience, and a lot of my friends are here, so we're happy."
Kenneth Kosgei of Oregon and Bigfork's Mackenna Morley won the men's and women's half marathon's.

more...It’s not just the sound of pounding feet when the Missoula Marathon returns this weekend.
The event is also bringing the beeps of debit card readers and opening cash registers, with new estimates saying race weekend could be worth as much as $2 million to the Garden City economy.
More than 6,000 racers, plus all their families and friends will be in Missoula for the 13th annual running of the marathon, and its associated races, starting on Friday night.
And that means no small bump in Missoula’s business, from hotels to restaurants and retail.
Our news partners at The Missoula Current did some number crunching and are reporting today the economic impact of the Marathon this year should hit $2 million, if not more.
Most downtown hotels are sold out or expecting to be, and with 40% of the participants coming from outside Montana, that means expenditures have the most impact locally.
It’s not just business that are helped economically — local charities, running programs and Missoula Parks and Rec are expected to receive upwards of 40-thousand dollars of the proceeds.

more...Tim Mosbacher is a retired middle school teacher taking a break as he runs around the country to once again lend a hand to his hometown race.
Mosbacher started running because he didn’t have a better option.
“I was in middle school back in the day,” said Mosbacher. “One of the P.E. coaches said, ‘You have to do a sport.’ And I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know what do do. Well, I’ll go run.’ So I started doing cross country then, and I was really bad.”
The Billings native improved enough to earn a scholarship at Dickinson State University. He tried a couple marathons in the late 1990s, but then took a break. He hit the road again a decade ago, running his hometown Missoula Marathon, and pretty soon he had found something to chase.
“It wasn’t until probably my fourth one. I said, ‘Well, I’ve done four different states,'” said Mosbacher. “And then I started picking ones I liked. And so once I did my 10th one, then I said, ‘I’m all in.'”
Mosbacher has now run marathons in 47 states. After Portland, Maine in October, the New York City Marathon in November, and a run in Maui in January, the 53-year-old can claim all 50. He has seen most of the country and every kind of race on his trek.
“I’ve run Boston, and I’ve run Chicago, so you’ve got those big ones,” Mosbacher said. “And then I’ve run really small ones. I’ve run one that had, I think, 15 runners in it.”
Ironically, Mosbacher has not run the Missoula Marathon in a decade. For the past six years, he helps the event by organizing and recruiting the elite runners who come to town.
“I go to other people’s communities and take from their community, really, when you’re running there,” said Mosbacher. “And so it’s really neat to give back.”
He admits he wants to run the Missoula Marathon again some day, because he wants a better time. In retirement, he is running faster than ever. Mosbacher won the Eisenhower Marathon in Kansas this year in a personal best time of 2 hours, 48 minutes, nearly 50 minutes faster than his 2009 time in Missoula.
Mosbacher also wants to run Tokyo, London and Berlin to finish off the six majors in the marathon world. He is excited to watch others chase fast times at the Missoula Marathon this week.
