Records were rewritten twice within the space of a few unforgettable minutes as the inaugural World Athletics U20 Mixed 4x100m relay produced one of the most dramatic sessions of the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Australia ignited the excitement in the opening heat by storming to a world U20 record of 41.64 seconds, becoming the first team ever to reach that mark and briefly claiming a place in history. For five memorable minutes, the Australian quartet of Uwezo Lebenda, Maya Taber, Kelechi Ekwomadu and Thewbelle Philp stood as world record holders after a sensational performance that also secured their place in Saturday's final.

Their celebration, however, proved to be short-lived.

Moments later, Great Britain delivered an even more electrifying display in the second heat, clocking 41.60 to erase Australia's newly established mark and set a fresh World U20 record. It was a masterclass in speed, precision and flawless baton exchanges that propelled the British team into the history books.

The record-breaking quartet of Divine Iheme, Savannah McKenzie Morgan, Mathew Ajayi and Sophie Thomas combined brilliantly from start to finish to produce the fastest mixed U20 4x100m relay ever recorded. Sophie Thomas, who is set to compete for the University of Connecticut (UConn) this year, produced a composed anchor leg to seal the landmark performance.

The extraordinary back-to-back world records underlined the remarkable depth of sprint talent on display, with several other nations also producing outstanding performances to qualify for the final.

Italy impressed with a personal best of 41.74, while the United States advanced comfortably in 41.82. Nigeria also produced a personal best of 41.91 to secure qualification.

Jamaica (42.08 PB), Germany (42.12 PB), France (42.16 PB) and Poland (42.18 PB) completed the eight-team final after delivering strong performances in one of the fastest mixed relay qualifying rounds ever witnessed at the U20 Championships.

With two world records already falling in rapid succession, anticipation is now soaring ahead of Saturday's final. If the qualifying heats are any indication, the newly established global mark of 41.60 may once again come under serious threat as the world's best young sprinters chase another piece of athletics history.
