At 84, Paul Watson Defies Two Hip Replacements To Complete Another London Marathon

At 84 years old, Paul Watson has proved that some of the greatest victories in distance running have little to do with the clock and everything to do with courage, persistence and the determination to keep moving forward.

Watson completed the 2026 London Marathon in 5:32:24, achieving a remarkable return to one of the world's most famous marathon courses just 22 months after undergoing a left hip replacement through the NHS.

His relationship with the London Marathon stretches back more than four decades. He first tackled the race in 1984, when he produced a remarkable 2:58 finish. After returning to London in 2007, persistent hip problems eventually forced him to undergo his first hip replacement on the right side in 2010.

Years later, another major challenge emerged.

In June 2024, Watson underwent a left hip replacement after severe pain began affecting his leg. At that point, there was genuine uncertainty over whether he would ever be able to return to marathon running.

Rather than accept that his running journey was over, however, Watson began the long process of rebuilding.

With rehabilitation, careful training and encouragement from his surgeon, he was back to structured running just four months after the operation. He trained three times a week, using a combination of outdoor roads and a treadmill at his retirement village while carefully managing his recovery and avoiding unnecessary injury risks.

His return to London also carried a purpose beyond personal achievement.

Watson ran the 2026 marathon in support of RNID, a charity particularly close to his heart because his wife uses a cochlear implant. His determination inspired others as he raised £2,500 for the organisation.

The marathon itself was far from straightforward.

A mishap with his stopwatch at the beginning of the race caused Watson to misjudge his early pace. By around mile 15, the effort had caught up with him and he admitted that he had "hit the wall."

But even then, he refused to give in.

Watson dug deep during the closing stages, found another burst of energy and remarkably finished the marathon with a sprint towards the line.

After everything his body had been through, crossing that finish line represented far more than a finishing time.

It was the culmination of more than 40 years of running, two hip replacements, countless training sessions and an unwavering belief that age does not necessarily have to dictate what is possible.

Watson's message to anyone wondering whether they should attempt another marathon is beautifully simple:

“If you really want to run another marathon, go for it.”

At 84, with two artificial hips and more than four decades of running behind him, Paul Watson is still chasing finish lines — and reminding the running world that sometimes the most inspiring performances are not the fastest ones.

They are the ones that simply refuse to stop.
