Filex Kibet Smashes Course Record as Netsanet Desta Claims Women’s Crown at Rome Half Marathon

Kenya’s Filex Kibet delivered a sensational performance at the 2026 Wizz Air Rome Half Marathon by Brooks, storming to victory in a remarkable 59:22 to establish a new men’s course record and headline an impressive display of distance running in the Italian capital.

The Kenyan produced a commanding performance over the 21.0975km distance, combining speed, endurance and tactical discipline to secure the prestigious title. His record-breaking achievement was the defining moment of an exciting competition that brought together some of the finest road-running talents from East Africa.

Kibet's winning time not only secured him a place in the event's history but also demonstrated his ability to compete at an exceptional level on the international road-running circuit. Breaking the one-hour barrier in a half marathon remains a significant benchmark in elite distance running, and his performance underlined the quality of the men's field.

Ethiopia's Selemon Atakiti Kidanu emerged as one of the standout performers of the day, producing an outstanding half-marathon debut to finish second in 59:38. Despite competing over the distance for the first time, the Ethiopian displayed remarkable composure and endurance, crossing the finish line just 16 seconds behind the eventual champion.

Kenya's Elisha Kiprop completed the men's podium after clocking 1:00:13, ensuring that two Kenyan athletes finished among the top three. His performance added further strength to Kenya's presence in a highly competitive race that saw the leading contenders produce impressive times on the streets of Rome.

While Kibet dominated the headlines in the men's competition, Ethiopia's Netsanet Desta delivered an equally impressive performance in the women's race, claiming victory in 1:07:26 to complete a memorable day of elite road racing.

Desta demonstrated exceptional consistency throughout the demanding half-marathon distance, maintaining the pace necessary to overcome a competitive field and secure the women's title. Her victory highlighted Ethiopia's continued strength in international distance running.

Kenya's Regina Wambui Ndungu mounted a strong challenge but ultimately settled for second place in 1:07:48, finishing 22 seconds behind the Ethiopian champion. Ndungu's performance ensured Kenya was represented on both the men's and women's podiums.

Ethiopia's Yalemget Yaregal rounded out the women's top three, crossing the finish line in 1:08:22 to complete an impressive Ethiopian showing in the women's competition.

The contrasting victories of Kibet and Desta provided the perfect storyline for an event that continues to attract accomplished distance runners to one of Europe's most historic cities. With athletes competing against the clock and one another, the race delivered both a new course record and an impressive collection of performances.

For Kibet, the achievement represents another significant milestone, with his name now attached to the men's course record. His 59:22 performance establishes a new standard for future competitors seeking success at the Rome Half Marathon.

Kidanu's impressive debut also offered a glimpse of his potential over the distance, while the strong performances of Kiprop, Ndungu and Yaregal further demonstrated the depth of talent competing at the event.

The 2026 edition will be remembered particularly for Kibet's record-breaking triumph, as the Kenyan's exceptional run added a new chapter to the race's history and reinforced Rome's growing reputation as a destination for elite international road racing.

With the men's course record rewritten and two deserving champions crowned, the Italian capital once again provided a memorable stage for some of the world's most accomplished distance-running talents.

Kwizera Seals Historic Prague Victory as a Costly Wrong Turn Steals the Spotlight

PRAGUE, Czech Republic — The streets of Prague were illuminated by speed, tension and one of the most dramatic finishes of the 2026 road-racing season as Rodrigue Kwizera produced a stunning victory at the Birell 10K Night Race.

Running his first official international race under the Spanish flag, the Burundi-born distance star stopped the clock at 27:15, smashing the Spanish national record by 10 seconds and adding another major victory to his remarkable 2026 campaign.

But the result tells only part of the story.

For much of the decisive phase of the race, it was Kenya’s Victor Kipruto Kiprono who appeared to be marching towards victory. After the leading group began to fracture around the seventh kilometre, Kiprono moved aggressively to the front alongside fellow Kenyan Elisha Kiprop Chemiron before gradually opening a significant gap on his pursuers.

By the eighth kilometre, the 26-year-old Kenyan had established himself as the clear leader and seemed to be heading towards a commanding triumph.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

As the race entered its final stretch, Kiprono followed the lead vehicle instead of taking the correct route towards the finish. The costly detour allowed Kwizera to close the gap and sweep past, with Kenya’s Owen Korir Kapkama also moving ahead.

In the space of a few seconds, a race that had appeared to be Kiprono’s to lose was transformed into a frantic battle for the podium.

Kwizera seized the opportunity with ruthless efficiency.

The Spanish representative crossed the line in 27:15, securing the victory and rewriting the Spanish record books. Kapkama followed just one second later in 27:16, while Kiprono recovered from his costly mistake to claim third in 27:18.

Despite the disappointment, Kiprono still produced one of the fastest performances of the night — and one of the most memorable.

Behind the leading trio, Kenya’s Filex Kibet Masai ran 27:19 for fourth, while Uruguay’s Santiago Catrofe completed the top five in 27:24.

The quality of the field was reflected throughout the results. Kenyan runners occupied seven of the top 20 positions, while Spain, Japan, Uruguay, the Netherlands, Belgium and hosts Czech Republic were also represented.

Japan’s Shunya Kikuchi added another national-record performance to the evening, running 28:07 to improve the Japanese record by eight seconds.

Birell 10K Night Race Prague 2026 — Men’s Elite Top 10

1. Rodrigue Kwizera (Spain) — 27:15

2. Owen Korir Kapkama (Kenya) — 27:16

3. Victor Kipruto Kiprono (Kenya) — 27:18

4. Filex Kibet Masai (Kenya) — 27:19

5. Santiago Catrofe (Uruguay) — 27:24

6. Elisha Kiprop Chemiron (Kenya) — 27:33

7. Elia Kiprop (Kenya) — 27:46

8. Isaac Kibet Ndiema (Kenya) — 27:47

9. Said Mechaal (Spain) — 27:59

10. Shunya Kikuchi (Japan) — 28:07

The men’s race was only half of an extraordinary evening in Prague. Ethiopia’s Chaltu Dida Diriba, just 19, dominated the women’s race to win in 30:04, finishing eight seconds ahead of her sister Robe Dida Diriba. Kenya’s Cynthia Chelangat Chepkwony completed the podium in 30:23.

The 2026 Birell 10K Night Race attracted almost 9,500 runners from 98 countries, with the elite field competing in ideal evening conditions of around 20 degrees Celsius and little wind.

Yet it was the men's finish that will linger longest.

Kwizera will leave Prague with a victory and a new national record. Kapkama will celebrate a superb second place. And Kiprono will be left wondering what might have been after a single wrong turn dramatically altered the final chapter of a race he had controlled for much of its decisive stage.

In distance running, victory can sometimes be decided not only by fitness, strength and tactics, but by the smallest of moments.

On this Prague night, one wrong turn changed everything.

Kenya and Ethiopia Share the Spotlight at the 2026 POG Perenco 10K as Kapkama and Chemnung Claim Top Honors

The 2026 POG Perenco 10K delivered another thrilling showcase of East African distance-running excellence, with Kenya and Ethiopia producing outstanding performances in both the men's and women's races.

In the men's race, Owen Korir Kapkama produced a commanding run to capture the title in 27:49, leading a remarkable Kenyan clean sweep of the podium. Kapkama crossed the line seven seconds ahead of compatriot Brian Kibor, who finished second in 27:56, while Filex Kibet Masai secured third place in 28:27. Ethiopia's Meniberu Yismaw narrowly missed out on the podium after finishing fourth in 28:32.

The women's race belonged to Loice Chemnung of Kenya, who delivered a superb performance to take victory in 30:52. Chemnung's decisive run proved too strong for the Ethiopian challengers, adding another prestigious international road racing title to Kenya's impressive tally.

Ethiopia filled the remaining podium places, with Abraha Axumawit claiming second in 31:25, just two seconds ahead of compatriot Gebre Aynalem, who finished third in 31:27. Mogesie Bosena completed an outstanding Ethiopian team performance by placing fourth in 31:38.

The results reflected the enduring rivalry between Kenya and Ethiopia, with Kenya dominating the men's event and securing the women's crown, while Ethiopia showcased its remarkable depth by occupying three of the top four positions in the women's race. The fast times and fiercely contested battles once again highlighted why East Africa continues to set the global standard in distance running.

Racing at Nyayo National Stadium, Chemnung stopped the clock at 31:46.09 to take the national title and confirm her qualification in emphatic fashion. The Kenyan distance star showcased her experience and strength throughout the race, maintaining control when the pressure mounted before pulling away to seal a memorable victory.

Diana Wanza claimed the silver medal after a determined performance, while Selah Busienei completed the podium in third place to take bronze in a fiercely contested final.

The victory adds to an impressive streak of performances by Chemnung, who has established herself as one of Kenya's most consistent long-distance runners. At the 2025 Athletics Kenya National Championships held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, she captured the women's 10,000m title in 31:39.09. Her latest success further underlines her dominance on the domestic circuit and strengthens expectations ahead of her international assignments later this season.

Before turning her full attention to Glasgow, Chemnung is set for another major test on the roads. With a Commonwealth Games berth secured and another high-profile competition on the horizon, Chemnung's season continues to gather momentum. Her blend of consistency, endurance and winning form makes her one of the athletes to watch as Kenya prepares for Glasgow and beyond.

The road to Glasgow is now firmly underway, and Chemnung has once again demonstrated why she remains among the country's leading hopes in women's distance running.
