The Boston Marathon is about to make history in another way, with a record 215 nonprofit organizations selected to participate in the 2027 Official Charity Program.
The Boston Athletic Association announced the record field on Monday, confirming that the program has surpassed 200 organizations for the first time. Among the 215 selected charities, 22 are first-time partners, adding a new group of organizations to one of the most prominent charity programs in distance running.
The 131st Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, April 19, 2027, with charity runners expected to account for close to 10 percent of the overall field. That translates into thousands of athletes taking on the legendary 26.2-mile course while raising money for causes that extend far beyond the race itself.
The charities represent a wide range of missions, including hospitals and medical care, cancer research, veterans' services, youth development, disability advocacy and homelessness prevention. For the runners involved, the Boston Marathon becomes more than a personal challenge—it becomes a platform for giving back and bringing attention to causes close to their hearts.
The financial impact of the program has also reached record levels. Charity runners raised $57.3 million in 2026, setting a new single-year fundraising record. That was a 13.7 percent increase from the $50.4 million raised in 2025, showing just how rapidly the charitable side of the Boston Marathon continues to grow.
Since the official charity initiative began in 1989, more than $675 million has been raised through Boston Marathon fundraising efforts, providing significant support to nonprofit organizations over nearly four decades.
The growth in the number of participating charities is equally striking. The program featured 160 organizations in 2024, while the 2027 edition will have 215. That is an increase of 55 charities, or roughly 34 percent, in just three years.
But earning a charity place is not simply a shortcut to the Boston starting line. Runners who secure one of these coveted spots take on a major fundraising responsibility, with commitments generally ranging from $10,000 to $15,000, depending on the charity and its requirements.
For many runners, that means their Boston journey begins long before they arrive in Hopkinton. Training runs are accompanied by fundraising campaigns, community events and personal appeals as athletes work to reach their targets while preparing for one of the world's most demanding and prestigious marathons.
The charity route has also become an important pathway for runners who cannot enter through the traditional qualifying system. It gives them an opportunity to experience Boston while simultaneously turning their marathon journey into a fundraising mission.
With 215 organizations now preparing their teams for 2027, the Boston Marathon's charitable footprint has never been larger.
When the starting gun fires next April, thousands of runners will chase the famous finish line on Boylston Street—but they will also be running for something much bigger than themselves.

Among the nation’s oldest athletic clubs, the B.A.A. was established in 1887, and, in 1896, more than half of the U.S. Olympic Team at the first modern games was composed of B.A.A. club members. The Olympic Games provided the inspiration for the first Boston Marathon, which culminated the B.A.A. Games on April 19, 1897. John J. McDermott emerged from a...
