Ethiopians Ashenafi Moges and Sifan Melaku runs away with titles at 2023 Stockholm Marathon

Ethiopia’s dominated the 2023 Stockholm Marathon, a World Athletics Label Road Race event, took place on Saturday, June 3. The following are top 20 results from 2023 Stockholm Marathon with Ashenafi Moges and Sifan Melaku running away with the tiles.

On the men’s, Moges away late to win with a time of 2:10:32 pulling away from his countryman Derara Hurisa (Ethiopia) who finished second in a time 2:11:01 ahead of Tsegaye Mekonnen (Ethiopia) who ran 2:12:32 for third place.

The Sweden National Senior Marathon Championships went to Samuel Tsegay after finishing fifth overall with a time of 2:14:28.

On the women’s side, Ethiopian athletes swept the competition with Sifan Melaku running 2:30:39 for the victory. Her compatriot Sorome Negash (Ethiopia) clocked 02:33:26 for second place with Yenenesh Dinkesa (Ethiopia) getting third in 2:36:39.

The Sweden national title went to Carolina Wikström (Sweden), who finished fourth overall with a time of 2:36:52.

Edwin Kimaiyo to lead Kenyan trio at Stockholm Marathon

The 2011 Berlin Marathon bronze medalist Edwin Kimaiyo will be hoping to debut the 2023 season on a high with a win at the 44th edition of the Stockholm Marathon, Sweden on June 3.

Kimaiyo will be joined by fellow countrymen Robert Kipkemboi and Shadrack Kimining in the Scandinavian nation. 

Kimaiyo last raced in October last year at the Munich Marathon where he finished fifth in 2:11:02 a race won by compatriot Philemon Kipchumba in 2:07:28. 

The 37-year-old will be aiming to lower his personal best of 2:09:12 that he set at the Shanghai Marathon, China in November 2017.

The Kenyan trio will face stiff competition from an Ethiopian quintet led by the world junior record holder Tsegaye Mekonnen.

Mekonnen caused a major upset in the world of athletics when he won the Dubai Marathon in 2014 aged just 19 years old in a time of 2:04:32 to set the the unofficial world junior record.

Others who will pose a threat to the Kenyans include; Ethiopia's Ashenafi Moges, Zewdu Hailu, Derara Hurisa and Fikre Workneh, Eritrea's Berhane Tesfay and Mao Ako from Tanzania.

The course record is held by Ethiopia's Nigussie Sahlesilassie 2:10:10 a time he set in 2019.

Felix Kirwa sent the wrong way at Stockholm Marathon, still wins race

The leaders of Saturday’s Stockholm Marathon were in confusion and disbelief after being sent the wrong way for an extra kilometer.Felix Kirwa, Tesfaye Lencho Anbesa, and Merhawi Keste were pointed in the wrong direction by race officials around the 30 km mark of the marathon.

They ran for a full minute before realizing the mistake, which cost them the lead in the race. Kirwa, 26, managed to come back and win the event in a time of 2:11:07, only one minute off the course record of 2:10:10, despite having to run an extra kilometer.

Kirwa spoke to Stockholm’s TV4 in a post-race interview: “I am very happy to win the Stockholm marathon but we ran wrong and I missed the record because of it.”

The event organizers blamed the error on motorcycle police officers who drove in the wrong direction.

Kesete, from Eritrea, hung onto second place in 2:11:45, while Tesfay, also from Eritrea, lost out on a podium spot to finish fourth. John Langat of Kenya, who wasn’t led the wrong way, finished third in 2:12:39.

Kirwa’s win in Stockholm puts him on three marathon wins, winning the 2016 Singapore Marathon and the 2016 Antwerp Marathon. Kirwa was banned from competing in 2019, after failing a drug test for the banned substance strychnine, commonly known as rat poison.

Strychnine is on the anti-doping list due to its effects as a stimulant and can give an athlete the ability to go for longer without feeling tired. Kirwa was stripped of his second-place finish at the 2018 Singapore Marathon as a result of the suspension.

A new record was set when Nigussie Sahlesilassie won the 2019 Stockholm Marathon this saturday clocking 2:10:10

The Ethiopian beat the track record by a full 48 seconds when he won the race in two hours, 10 minutes and 10 seconds.

He was followed by fellow Ethiopian Tafese Delegen in the second place while Kenyan runner Gilbert Kollum Yegon placed third.

It was cool and cloudy in the Swedish capital, with competitors and spectators experiencing some light rain. Nevertheless, 12,845 runners competed in the 41st annual marathon.

The Stockholm Marathon is one of the biggest in Europe and widely considered to amongst the most beautiful in the world.

Runners past some of the city's most famous landmarks and historical buildings.

Stockholm is built on a series of islands, large parts of the course run along the waterfront.

Despite the sometimes breezy winds, several people performed fine times on it, last year, the new track stretch.

Best Swedish was Eskilstuna FI's Adhanom Abraha who in time 2:16:48 ran the fastest time of a Swedish in ASICS Stockholm Marathon, in twenty years.

Sweden's Larsson wins the Stockholm marathon while Japan’s Yuki Kawauchi finished 4th

“Today I felt the spectators helped me pull out something extra over and over again. It was absolutely fantastic,” Mikaela Larsson told Sweden’s SVT broadcaster. “I’m tired but terribly happy. I hadn’t expected this beforehand.” At the 30km mark, Larsson spurted ahead of her Ethiopian rival Beju Bekelu, building a lead of three minutes and 27 seconds by the finishing line. In the run-up to the start, many had feared that the 27C temperatures would mean runner collapsing from heat exhaustion, but the arrival of clouds just before the start made the contest slightly cooler than expected. Kenyan Lawi Kiptui won the men’s competition with a dramatic finish which saw him overtake and power ahead of his Ethiopian rival Bazu Worku. “It was an extremely hot race,” Kiptui told SVT. “I focused on nothing but winning.” Boston Marathon winner Japan’s Yuki Kawauchi finished fourth nearly 10 minutes behind the winner.  (06/02/2018) Views: 1,678 ⚡AMP

Barbro and Jan will celebrate their wedding anniversary running the stockholm marathon

Barbro and Jan Paraniak are not like everyone else. They got married at the Stadium after finishing the 1999 Stockholm Marathon.  On saturday they will celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary. Then they are again on the starting line in Stockholm. Together they have run 784 marathons in 123 places in 32 countries. Although the Stockholm Marathon is very special to them, the couple continues to run marathons all over the world.  The last five weekends they have been on the starting line in Säter, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Darmstadt, Germany (24 yards in a prison yard). On Saturday they are on the starting line again. It's 21st time for Barbro and 36th for Jan. "It's one of the world's ten most beautiful races. And when it's nice weather, it's a very good public support, "says Barbro. "As a citymember, Stockholm is one of the most beautiful. Yuki Kawauchi is set to Run the Stockholm Marathon, weather forecast says Hot

This will be the 40th annual ASICS Stockholm Marathon and 7,000 runners from more than 100 countries have registered.  Racing this year will be Boston Marathon's winner Yuki Kawauchi who we know can handle extreme weather conditions.  Also, Fred Grönwall will be racing who is the Swedes' favorite.  It is predicted to be a warm day for marathoning and addressing this there will be 19 fluid and energy stations and at least 15 showers along the route.  The organizers have said they will keep the weather forecast in sight to be able to put in extra efforts if necessary.  The marathon will finish in the beautiful stadium built for the 1912 Olympic Games. The Olympic Stadium has been the site of numerous memorable athletic performances, with no less than 83 world records in track and field. 78-year-old EIna Roxström is running her 40th Stockholm marathon

Every weekday Elna Roxstrom wakes up just after 3AM.  She makes coffee and reads the morning newspaper. Then she goes out and runs for an hour and a quarter. “The mornings are absolutely amazing. It's cool and it is just me and the moon,” Elna says. A big goal for her is to complete 40 Stockholm Marathons. She ran 3 hours and 48 minutes on her 20th race and her best time came four years later: 3:24:06. This year, her goal is to get under six hours. "It's a big goal to complete 40.  Sometimes I wonder how I did it with four children and several grandchildren.  The Stockholm Marathon Jubilee is not my final goal.”  She will continue to run the race as long as she can stay under the time limit.
