Chicago Hotel Workers Strike Disrupts Marathon Weekend as Thousands of Runners Arrive

CHICAGO, USA — The 2026 Chicago Marathon weekend has been overshadowed by a major labour dispute after hundreds of downtown hotel workers walked off the job, disrupting hospitality services just as thousands of runners and spectators arrive in the city for one of the world's biggest road races.

Members of UNITE HERE Local 1 began striking on Friday, October 9, at six major downtown hotels after contract negotiations failed to produce an agreement. The walkout has placed additional pressure on Chicago's hospitality industry at a particularly busy time, with marathon participants travelling from across the United States and around the world ahead of Sunday's race on October 11.

Although the affected hotels remain open, reduced staffing has created significant operational challenges. Guests have reported long queues, delayed check-ins and disruptions to services, including housekeeping, reception and food provision. The situation has raised concerns among visitors who need adequate rest, reliable accommodation and convenient access to race-day preparations.

Six Major Hotels Affected

The strike is currently affecting six prominent properties in downtown Chicago: the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Palmer House Hilton, The Westin Chicago River North, The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago, Waldorf Astoria Chicago and Millennium Hotel Knickerbocker Chicago.

The dispute centres on workers' demands for improved wages and working conditions. Union members have raised concerns about the rising cost of living and the difficulties some employees face in meeting basic expenses despite working in a major tourism and hospitality market.

The walkout follows a broader labour dispute involving thousands of hotel employees across Chicago. More than 7,000 workers at 46 hotels had authorised strike action in an earlier vote, raising the possibility that the disruption could spread beyond the six properties already affected.

For marathon visitors, any expansion of the strike could make an already busy race weekend more complicated, particularly for those staying downtown or relying on hotel services before and after the race.

Unseasonably Warm Weather Adds to Marathon Challenges

Beyond the labour dispute, unusually warm conditions are another important consideration for athletes preparing for Sunday's marathon.

Forecasts have pointed to temperatures potentially reaching the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (approximately 24–28°C), accompanied by elevated humidity. Such conditions would be warmer than runners typically expect during an October marathon in Chicago and could significantly influence race-day strategies.

Warm weather can increase the body's cardiovascular strain, accelerate fluid loss and make it more difficult for runners to maintain their planned pace over the 42.195-kilometre distance. Athletes targeting personal bests or competitive finishing times may need to reassess their expectations depending on the conditions.

Runners are therefore encouraged to monitor official race-day weather updates, begin their hydration preparations early and avoid starting at a pace that is too aggressive for the conditions. Appropriate fluid intake, sensible pacing and attention to the body's warning signs can be particularly important when temperatures and humidity are elevated.

A Difficult Weekend for Runners and Visitors

The combination of a hotel workers' strike and potentially challenging weather presents an additional test for participants travelling to Chicago for the marathon. For many athletes, the weekend is the culmination of months of preparation, training and financial investment, making reliable accommodation and a smooth pre-race routine especially important.

The disruption also highlights the wider impact of labour disputes during major sporting events, when hotels, restaurants and other hospitality businesses experience increased demand from international visitors.

With the marathon approaching, attention will remain on developments in the hotel negotiations, the possibility of further strike action and the weather conditions expected on race morning.

Despite the uncertainty, thousands of runners are preparing to take on the streets of Chicago on Sunday, hoping to deliver strong performances in one of the world's most prestigious marathon events.

Martin Naibei Musau and Meskerem Mamo Shine as Uganda and Ethiopia Claim Lisbon Marathon Victories

Uganda’s Martin Naibei Musau and Ethiopia’s Meskerem Mamo Hayile emerged as the standout performers at the 2026 EDP Lisbon Marathon, securing victories in the men’s and women’s races on Saturday, October 10, in Portugal.

The two champions delivered impressive performances over the classic 42.195-kilometre distance, while runners from Kenya and Ethiopia featured prominently across both races, producing a competitive day of elite marathon running.

Musau led the men’s field with a commanding performance, crossing the finish line in 2:08:07 to claim the title. The Ugandan’s victory was particularly significant as he improved on his previous personal best of 2:08:42, recorded at the Hamburg Marathon in 2024.

Kenya’s Gilbert Kipkurui finished second in 2:08:33, narrowly ahead of compatriot Stephen Chebon Kipkech, who completed the podium in 2:08:35. Just two seconds separated the two Kenyan athletes, highlighting the intensity of the battle for the remaining podium positions.

Ethiopia’s Desalegn Yilie finished fourth in 2:09:08, followed by Kenya’s Elkana Langat in fifth in 2:09:20. Another Kenyan, Victor Kiplimo, placed sixth in 2:10:34, while Ethiopia’s Abdi Ali Gelchu took seventh in 2:11:11.

Demisu Gemeda secured eighth place in 2:11:29, followed by Kenya’s Zablon Chumba in ninth in 2:12:23. Ethiopia’s Dechasa Nugusa Demsa completed the men’s top 10 with a time of 2:12:53.

10. Dechasa Nugusa Demsa (Ethiopia) — 2:12:53

Kenya recorded five athletes inside the top 10, while Ethiopia had four, with Uganda represented by the race winner. The results demonstrated the strength of East African distance running, with Musau producing the decisive performance to finish ahead of his Kenyan challengers.

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Meskerem Mamo Hayile delivered another outstanding performance, crossing the finish line in 2:28:04 to secure victory after a closely fought contest among the leading athletes.

Mamo finished just seven seconds ahead of compatriot Tejitu Siyum, who claimed second place in 2:28:11. Bashanke Bilo completed an all-Ethiopian podium, finishing third in 2:28:15 after another strong performance over the marathon distance.

The competition at the front remained intense, with Sintayehu Tilahun taking fourth in 2:28:19 and Abeebech Afework finishing fifth in 2:29:00. The five Ethiopian athletes at the top of the standings underlined the country's considerable depth in women’s marathon running.

The women’s race was particularly notable for the narrow margins separating the leading contenders. Mamo’s seven-second winning advantage reflected a determined contest at the front, with Siyum and Bilo pushing the eventual champion throughout the race.

The two competitions highlighted different dimensions of marathon racing. Musau established himself as the leading man with a personal-best performance, while Mamo prevailed in a tightly contested women’s race to secure the women’s crown.

Vinny Mauri: From Planet Fitness Treadmills to the 2026 Chicago Marathon Spotlight

At just 25 years old, American distance runner Vinny Mauri is quickly emerging as one of the most intriguing new names in marathon running. His remarkable breakthrough, achieved without a sponsor and while coaching himself, has transformed him from an ambitious runner balancing work and training into a rising professional athlete preparing to compete on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Mauri announced his arrival in spectacular fashion in April 2026, clocking an astonishing 2:05:54 at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. The performance marked an extraordinary marathon debut and was reported to be the fastest marathon debut by an American on a record-eligible course, immediately establishing him as a runner to watch.

What makes his achievement particularly compelling is the unconventional path he followed to reach that level. Before attracting national attention, Mauri was working at a local running store, managing his own training and pursuing his ambitions without the backing of a major sponsor. His journey demonstrates how determination, consistency and an unconventional approach can open doors in elite athletics.

One of the most fascinating elements of Mauri’s preparation has been his reliance on the treadmill. Rather than depending exclusively on outdoor miles, he reportedly completed a substantial portion of his training on commercial treadmills at Planet Fitness, building the endurance needed to make an immediate impact over the marathon distance.

His training volume has also attracted considerable attention, with reports indicating that he logged more than 130 miles per week. During his buildup for Chicago, he reportedly completed a remarkable 45-mile treadmill session, highlighting the extraordinary workload behind his rapid rise. His approach has become one of the defining features of his story, although such demanding training volumes are highly individual and require careful management.

Mauri’s breakthrough has already transformed his career. He has signed a professional contract with ASICS, moving from the ranks of unsponsored runners into the professional athletics scene. The agreement represents a significant milestone for an athlete who achieved his first major marathon breakthrough while coaching himself and balancing his running ambitions with employment.

His next challenge comes at the 2026 Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 11, where he will face a deep international field at one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Unlike his near-solo performance in Toledo, Chicago will present a different test, with experienced competitors, a highly competitive elite field and the pressure of racing shoulder to shoulder with some of the world's best marathoners.

The American record of 2:04:43, set by Conner Mantz, provides an important benchmark as the country's leading marathoners prepare for the race. Mauri is expected to test himself against the leading American contingent, although challenging the national record will require him to reproduce his outstanding debut performance in a much more demanding competitive environment.

There will also be considerable interest in how his unconventional preparation translates to race day. His treadmill-based training has demonstrated an unusual combination of high mileage, controlled pacing and sustained endurance work. However, the marathon remains unpredictable, and Chicago will test his ability to manage the pace, respond to competition and maintain his strength over the full 26.2 miles.

From running countless miles at a commercial gym to securing a professional contract and earning a place among the elite contenders in Chicago, Mauri has taken an extraordinary route into high-level marathon running. His rise challenges conventional expectations about how a successful professional career begins and highlights the many different paths through which exceptional talent can emerge.

Mauri has already proved that he possesses remarkable potential, but Chicago offers an opportunity to demonstrate that his breakthrough was more than a spectacular debut. As he prepares to line up against some of the world's finest marathoners, all eyes will be on whether the young American can turn his unconventional training methods and rapid rise into another memorable performance on the global stage.

At the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, she delivered an extraordinary series of performances, winning three gold medals in the women’s 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. The treble represented a major milestone in her career and demonstrated her ability to excel across individual sprint events and team competition.

Jefferson-Wooden won the 100m in 10.61 seconds, setting a championship record and improving her personal best. The performance underlined her acceleration and top-end speed, securing her place among the fastest women in the history of the event.

She continued her winning run in the 200m, taking gold in 21.68 seconds. Her performance demonstrated that her abilities extended well beyond the shorter sprint, as she combined speed with the strength and composure required to maintain her pace around the bend and through the home straight.

Kenyan Stars Lead Strong Elite Fields for the 2026 Lisbon Marathon

The 2026 Lisbon Marathon is set to feature a competitive international field, with Kenyan distance runners leading the men's elite entries and a strong Ethiopian contingent adding depth to the women's race.

Scheduled for October 10 in Lisbon, Portugal, the race will bring together athletes with impressive personal bests, setting the stage for an exciting contest over the classic 42.195-kilometer distance.

Kenya's Jonathan Kiplimo Maiyo headlines the selected men's elite field with a personal best of 2:04:56, placing him among the leading names to watch. He will be joined by compatriot Timothy Kibet Misoi, who has a best of 2:06:07, as Kenya looks to make a strong impression on the Portuguese course.

John Langat and Zablon Chumba complete the selected Kenyan men's lineup, both carrying personal bests of 2:07:11. Their presence adds further strength to a team with considerable experience and proven marathon ability.

The women's race also promises an intriguing battle, with Kenya and Ethiopia represented by four athletes each in the selected elite field.

Kenya's Ruth Chebitok leads the women's entries with a personal best of 2:21:03. She faces a strong Ethiopian challenge led by Sintayehu Tilahun Getahun, whose best stands at 2:22:19.

Ethiopia's Abebech Afework Bekele, with a personal best of 2:23:33, and Worknesh Alemu, who has run 2:24:42, complete the selected women's field. Their presence sets up a potentially compelling contest between two of East Africa's leading distance-running nations.

With established marathon performers on both sides, the Lisbon Marathon offers an opportunity for the elite athletes to test themselves against high-level opposition and pursue strong performances on race day.

While personal bests provide a useful indication of each runner's credentials, the final outcome will depend on race-day conditions, pacing and execution over the demanding marathon distance.

With the selected elite fields featuring a strong Kenyan presence and determined Ethiopian challengers, attention will turn to Lisbon on October 10 as the athletes prepare for one of Portugal's major road-running events.

Audrey Werro Earns Double Athlete of the Year Nominations After Record-Breaking 2026 Season

Swiss middle-distance star Audrey Werro has strengthened her reputation as one of the world’s leading 800m runners after earning nominations for both the World Athletics Athlete of the Year and European Athletics Athlete of the Year awards following an outstanding 2026 campaign.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable season, combining major championship victories with exceptional performances that have elevated her standing among the sport’s elite. Her achievements have made her a strong contender for international recognition as she continues to establish herself on the global stage.

Werro’s 2026 campaign has been defined by three major victories: the European Athletics Championships 800m title, the Diamond League Final crown and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship 800m title. Winning across these prestigious competitions has underlined her ability to deliver when the stakes are highest.

Her performances have been particularly impressive over two laps, where she has demonstrated a powerful combination of speed, endurance and tactical maturity. Against some of the strongest competitors in the world, the Swiss star has repeatedly shown that she belongs among the leading figures in women’s middle-distance running.

One of the defining moments of her season came in Zürich, where Werro thrilled the home crowd with an extraordinary 1:53.70 performance in the 800m. The time was reported as the fastest women’s 800m performance in 43 years and the third-fastest in the event’s history, placing her among a select group of athletes to have reached such an exceptional level.

Werro’s season has also been notable for her sustained assault on the record books. She reportedly broke the Diamond League record three times during the campaign and produced three of the five fastest women’s 800m performances ever recorded, highlighting the remarkable consistency behind her breakthrough year.

Rather than relying on a single standout result, Werro has built her case for the sport’s highest individual honours through a series of performances at the highest level. Her success across European and international competitions has demonstrated both her competitive versatility and her capacity to thrive under pressure.

The dual nominations now offer recognition of a season in which Werro has moved beyond emerging-talent status to become one of the most compelling names in women’s athletics. A victory in either award would represent another major milestone in a career that continues to gather momentum.

With three major titles, a historic performance on home soil and a series of record-breaking displays, Werro has given herself a compelling case for year-end honours. Whether she ultimately claims the title of the world’s best female athlete remains to be seen, but her 2026 season has already established her as one of the outstanding performers of the year.
