Stephen Biebelhausen has taken stroller running to an extraordinary level after reportedly running a mile in roughly 4:17 while pushing his child at the Guardian Mile in Cleveland.

The former college distance runner produced the remarkable performance on the Hope Memorial Bridge, covering the road-mile course at a pace that, if officially ratified, would dramatically rewrite the men's Guinness World Record for the fastest mile while pushing a stroller.

Biebelhausen's reported time is approximately nine seconds faster than the current men's record of 4:26.29, set by Silas Frantz in Arroyo Grande, California, in June 2025. For a record that is barely more than a year old, an improvement of that magnitude would be extraordinary.

And Biebelhausen had the running credentials to make such a performance possible.

During his college career with the Miami RedHawks, Biebelhausen established himself as a highly accomplished middle-distance runner. He owns a 1500m personal best of 3:48.11, a mark that places him among the fastest athletes in Miami University's history, while he also recorded a 4:06.68 indoor mile.

That background in competitive distance running makes the 4:17 stroller mile even more fascinating. Maintaining a pace of roughly 4:17 per mile is demanding under normal circumstances; doing it while pushing a stroller and a child throughout the race adds an entirely different physical challenge.

Biebelhausen was not the only athlete taking on the unusual challenge at the Guardian Mile. Another runner, also pushing his child, completed the race in an impressive 4:32.

Stroller racing has steadily developed into a genuine record category, with runners testing themselves over everything from the mile to the half marathon. On the women's side, Kaitlin Donner recorded a 5:11 stroller mile in 2024, while longer-distance attempts have also produced remarkable performances, including a 1:08:04 half marathon.

Yet Biebelhausen's reported 4:17 could prove to be the most eye-catching mark of them all.

There is one important catch: the performance is not officially a world record yet.

Guinness World Records must review the documentation and verify that the attempt complied with all of its requirements, including the specifications for the stroller and the minimum weight of the child being carried throughout the distance.

Until that verification is completed, Frantz's 4:26.29 remains the official men's record.

But if Biebelhausen's time is confirmed, the record will fall by a huge margin.

A 4:17 mile is already an exceptional performance. A 4:17 mile while pushing a stroller and a child is something altogether different.

If Biebelhausen's 4:17 is officially confirmed, the Guardian Mile will have produced far more than an impressive road race. It could have witnessed the setting of a remarkable new benchmark in one of running's most unusual and rapidly growing record categories — proving once again that the limits of speed can sometimes be pushed in the most unexpected ways.
