At Just 18, She Conquered The World's Toughest Footrace: Kaylee Frederick's Incredible Badwater 135 Story

Most athletes spend years building the experience, endurance, and mental resilience required to earn a place at the starting line of the Badwater 135. For Kaylee Frederick, age was never a barrier. Before she had even graduated from high school, the young runner from Johnstown, Pennsylvania had already etched her name into ultrarunning history.

In July 2023, Frederick became the youngest person ever to finish the legendary Badwater 135, completing the brutal 135-mile (217-kilometre) race across California's Death Valley in an astonishing 40 hours, 6 minutes, and 43 seconds. She achieved the feat at just 18 years old, breaking barriers in one of the most unforgiving endurance events on Earth.

The Badwater 135 is widely regarded as one of the toughest footraces in the world. Athletes battle relentless heat that can push road temperatures beyond 120°F (49°C) while climbing thousands of feet in elevation across the scorching desert. Simply reaching the finish line is considered a victory, making Frederick's accomplishment even more extraordinary.

Her preparation reflected an uncommon level of dedication. Knowing she could not replicate Death Valley's extreme climate in Pennsylvania, Frederick trained through the summer wearing multiple layers of clothing and sauna suits to adapt her body to intense heat. Even more remarkably, she secured her coveted Badwater qualification while still just 17 years old—an achievement that many experienced ultrarunners spend years pursuing.

The race itself demanded every ounce of her physical and mental strength. For more than 40 hours, she remained on the course through two nights and an entire day without sleep. She chose to run without music, instead keeping her mind occupied by solving mathematical calculations in her head as the endless miles stretched before her.

There was one moment when everything nearly came to an end. Around mile 93, exhaustion overwhelmed her. She collapsed to the ground in tears, convinced her body had nothing left to give. But as she listened, she heard the footsteps of other competitors approaching from behind. That sound reignited her determination. She rose once more, gathered herself, and continued forward despite the overwhelming fatigue.

When the finish line finally came into view, Frederick found one final burst of energy. Rather than simply crossing it, she sprinted through the tape, completing a performance that will be remembered as one of the most inspiring achievements in the history of the race.

Still only 18 years old and months away from her 19th birthday, Kaylee Frederick proved that courage, preparation, and unwavering determination can outweigh age and experience. Her historic finish at Badwater 135 stands as a powerful reminder that extraordinary achievements often belong to those bold enough to challenge limits that others believe are impossible.
