Germany’s Domenika Mayer delivered a commanding performance to win the ADAC Marathon Hannover in a course record of 2:21:26, securing the national championship title as well.

Improving significantly on her previous personal best of 2:23:16, Mayer moved to second on the German all-time list and 11th on the European all-time rankings. Her performance also stands as the second fastest time by a European woman this year. With the victory, Mayer became the first athlete to win the Hannover Marathon four times.

Fellow German Fabienne Königstein finished second in 2:24:31, while Ethiopia’s Almaz Negede took third in 2:30:25.

Kibet Surges Late to Win Men’s Race

Kenya’s Maru Thomas Kibet captured the men’s title in dramatic fashion, running a personal best of 2:07:53.

After trailing late in the race, Kibet closed a significant gap and overtook Zimbabwe’s Godwin Katakura with just over two kilometers remaining. Katakura held on for second in 2:08:46, also a major personal best, while Ethiopia’s Asnake Dubre finished third in 2:10:22.

Germany’s Tom Thurley placed sixth overall in 2:11:02, earning the German national title.

A Record Event in Hannover

More than 6,000 marathon runners registered for the 34th edition of the race. Including shorter distance events staged throughout the weekend, total participation reached nearly 34,000 athletes, setting a new event record.

Mayer Dominates from the Start

The anticipated duel between Mayer and Königstein never materialized. Königstein entered the race with limited preparation following an injury, and Mayer quickly took control.

By the halfway mark, Mayer split 70:31, nearly a minute ahead of Königstein (71:25). From there, the gap continued to grow.

“Given the short preparation time, I am happy with my race. I had no problems after the injury—that’s great. Domenika was very strong today,” said Königstein, who is now targeting the European Championships marathon in Birmingham this August.

Mayer admitted the early pace may have been ambitious but remained strong enough to deliver a breakthrough performance.

“I am really happy. The pace was a bit too fast early, and you pay for that later,” she said. “But there is still more to come. I am aiming for the 2:20 mark. I’m always trying to run faster and see what is possible—after all, my time is limited. I’m not 25 anymore.”

With this performance, Mayer now trails only national record holder Irina Mikitenko (2:19:19) on Germany’s all-time list.

Late Drama in the Men’s Race

The men’s race saw a dramatic shift in the closing kilometers. Godwin Katakura, who had led for most of the race, slowed significantly in the final stages, opening the door for Kibet.

“I did not expect to win and had already settled for second,” said Kibet. “This is a huge personal best. In the future, I want to run 2:03.”

Thurley Claims National Title

After pre-race favorite Johannes Motschmann dropped out around 25K due to a groin issue, the path cleared for Tom Thurley.

The 32-year-old delivered a personal best of 2:11:02 to secure the German title 

“I had hoped it might work out this way—but a marathon is long, and you never know,” said Thurley. “My goal is to run under 2:10. If I get the opportunity to compete for Germany at the European Championships, I will take it.”

The historic streets of Hannover are braced for a spectacle this Sunday, April 12, as one of Europe’s most exciting road races—the Hannover Marathon—returns with a stacked elite field and the promise of blistering times. With a blend of homegrown German stars and seasoned international contenders, the stage is perfectly set for a day of drama, speed, and possibly record-breaking performances.

A Fierce German Rivalry Headlines the Women’s Race

The spotlight in the women’s race shines brightly on Germany’s finest trio, each arriving in peak form and eager to assert dominance on home soil. Fabienne Königstein leads the charge with an outstanding personal best of 2:22:17, positioning her as a serious contender not only for victory but also for the course record.

But the path to glory will be anything but straightforward. Domenika Mayer (2:23:16) and Laura Hottenrott (2:24:32) are both capable of matching Königstein stride for stride, setting up what promises to be a thrilling all-German duel.

The benchmark they will be chasing remains the 2:23:50 course record set by Rakel Haile in 2019—a mark that now looks increasingly vulnerable given the quality of this year’s field.

Men’s Race: Eyes Fixed on the Clock

In the men’s contest, the narrative revolves around speed—and one man stands at the center of it. Ethiopia’s Deribe Robi arrives as the standout favorite, boasting a remarkable personal best of 2:05:58. That time places him comfortably beneath the current course record of 2:06:05, set in 2023 by Germany’s Amanal Petros.

If conditions align, Robi has both the pedigree and pace to rewrite the record books.

Yet the race is far from a one-man affair. Morocco’s Mohcin Outalha (2:06:49), Israel’s Godadaw Belachew (2:07:45), and Uganda’s Ben Chelimo Somikwo (2:08:03) bring depth and danger to the field, ensuring that any lapse in pace could be swiftly punished.

The streets of Berlin witnessed a breathtaking exhibition of endurance and precision as the 2026 Berlin Half Marathon delivered one of the fastest and most competitive editions in recent memory. Bringing together more than 43,000 athletes from 134 nations—including a stellar lineup of world-class competitors—the race stood as a true global celebration of distance running at its highest level. In a contest defined by relentless pace and razor-thin margins, the men’s race produced a historic sub-60 double, while the women’s field showcased a masterclass of control and strength.

In the men’s race, Andrea Kiptoo of Kenya emerged victorious in a dramatic sprint finish, clocking a sensational 59:11 personal best. In a rare and electrifying moment, he was matched stride-for-stride by compatriot Dennis Kipkemoi, who crossed the line in the exact same time—also a personal best—settling for second place only by the narrowest of margins. The duo’s performance underlined Kenya’s continued dominance, as both men dipped under the prestigious 60-minute barrier.

Germany’s Amanal Petros delivered a performance of immense national pride, claiming third place in 59:22, setting a new national record. Roared on by the home crowd, Petros not only secured a podium finish but etched his name deeper into German athletics history with a landmark run.

Just off the podium, South Sudan’s Dominic Lobalu impressed with a swift 59:23, while France’s Etienne Daguinos (59:27) and Ethiopia’s Bereket Nega (59:43) ensured the race remained fiercely competitive deep into the top ten.

On the women’s side, Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw produced a composed and commanding run to take the win in 1:05:07, asserting her authority with a decisive move that left the field chasing. Behind her, Kenya’s Daisilah Jerono delivered a strong performance to secure second place in 1:05:21, a well-earned personal best that highlighted her rising trajectory.

Completing the podium was another Kenyan, Veronica Loleo, who clocked 1:05:35, also a personal best, sealing a double podium finish for Kenya in the women’s race. The trio set a high standard, combining tactical awareness with impressive finishing strength.

Further down the field, Rwanda’s Florence Niyonkuru (1:07:22) and Germany’s Esther Pfeiffer (1:07:25) led the chase pack, while Belgium’s Chloé Herbiet and Germany’s Eva Dieterich added depth to a high-quality top ten.

Guatemala has a new distance queen. On the streets of Barcelona, Viviana Aroche delivered the performance of her life, clocking a sensational 1:11:27 in the half marathon to set both a new Guatemalan national record and a new Central American record. The landmark run not only elevates her status in the region but also places her firmly among the most formidable distance athletes in the Americas this season.

Aroche’s historic mark eclipses the previous Central American record of 1:12:46 set by Costa Rica’s Diana Bogantes in Boston on November 10, 2024. By slicing more than a minute off that standard, the Guatemalan star redefined the limits of regional excellence in the 21.097-kilometer discipline.

Her race unfolded with remarkable precision and composure. According to official tracking data from the Mitja Marató Barcelona, Aroche passed 5km in 17:09, signaling controlled aggression from the gun. She reached 10km in 34:07 and 15km in 51:07, maintaining an impressive rhythm that balanced speed with endurance. At 20km, the clock read 1:08:01 — the record already within reach. She powered through the final stretch to stop the clock at 1:11:27, sealing a breakthrough performance that will resonate across Central America.

This latest achievement further strengthens Aroche’s remarkable résumé. Over the past few seasons, she has methodically rewritten Guatemala’s record books, from middle-distance track events to long-distance road racing. Her progression — spanning from 800 meters to the half marathon — reflects rare versatility and a steady evolution toward endurance dominance. With national records in multiple disciplines and now ownership of every Central American best from 3000 meters to the half marathon, Aroche has constructed a legacy that transcends a single race.

Beyond the numbers, this run symbolizes a powerful moment for Guatemalan athletics. It showcases the emergence of a generation capable of competing — and winning — on international roads. In Barcelona, under clear skies and fast conditions, Viviana Aroche did more than break a record. The Gutenberg Mainz Half Marathon delivered fireworks on Sunday as both the men’s and women’s course records were shattered in one of the fastest editions in race history. Kenya’s James Kipkurui and Esther Chemtai claimed impressive victories, establishing Mainz as Germany’s second-fastest half marathon behind only Berlin.

In a thrilling debut, 23-year-old Kipkurui clocked 60:50, breaking the previous course record by 11 seconds and becoming the first athlete to dip under 61 minutes on the Mainz course. The surprise winner from Eldama Ravine near Eldoret trains under the guidance of 1992 Olympic steeplechase champion Matthew Birir. “This victory comes as a surprise to me,” Kipkurui said after the race. “My next goal now is to improve my time to around 59 minutes.”

The men’s race began at a blistering pace, with the leaders going through 10K in 28:35, suggesting a sub-60 finish. But as the tempo settled, Kipkurui made his move just before 15K and never looked back. Germany’s national marathon record holder Samuel Fitwi closed strong to finish second in 61:22, narrowly missing his personal best. Kenya’s Joshua Kithuku took third in 61:24.

On the women’s side, Esther Chemtai also turned heads with a dominant performance. Running only her second half marathon, the 31-year-old surged ahead with two kilometers to go and crossed the line in 68:52—nearly a full minute faster than the previous course record of 69:46. Chemtai, who trains in the Ngong Hills outside Nairobi, now has her sights set on a sub-67 mark. “It was only my second half marathon and my first time under 70 minutes,” she said. “I will run a marathon in the future, but first I want to get faster in the half marathon.”

Fellow Kenyan Rency Kogo impressed in her debut, finishing second in 69:04, while Belgium’s Hanne Verbruggen ran a personal best of 69:43 to take third. Germany’s Domenika Mayer, who battled early pacing struggles, finished fourth in 69:56—just 10 seconds off her personal best.

The 2025 edition drew over 8,500 participants in the half marathon, with total entries across all events reaching 13,700. With elite performances and deep fields, Mainz continues to solidify its place among Europe’s premier road races.

A great running festival was offered today to the 5,000 enthusiastic spectators in Peuerbach. At the 42nd Int. Raiffeisen New Year's Eve Run – one of the five largest New Year's Eve runs in Europe – a new record number of participants was set with 1,103 registrations and 1,007 finishers.

The focus of the event was the women's and men's ace race, which was staffed by world-class athletes. And in both competitions, Germany was able to win the title this year: In the men's race, the reigning German 5,000 meter champion Florian BREMM defended his previous year's title in a thrilling final sprint against the Kenyan relay cross world champion Reynold CHERUIYOT, in the women's race, Elena BURKARD was the first European since 2013 to enter the winners' list. Austria took 4th place with Sebastian FREY from Vienna and Lotte SEILER from Styria. "We experienced two extremely exciting races today, the atmosphere was unique again," said OC boss Carsten Eich. The commitment of 120 volunteers from IGLA long life makes the implementation of this sensational event possible in the first place.

Thrilling men's race with German winner

The run of the aces in the men's race was hard to beat in terms of excitement. The race over 6,800 meters was marked by a duel between the 2024 Cross Country World Champion Reynold CHERUIYOT and last year's German winner Florian BREMM. In the 6th of a total of 8 laps, the Kenyan attacked and looked like the sure winner in the meantime. But step by step, the 24-year-old from LCA Höchstadt/Aisch fought his way back and together the duo ran towards the finish line. On the home straight, Bremm had the better end for herself, as in the previous year, and won after 18:45.28 minutes with a 1.34-second lead. Sebastian Frey from DSG Wien was in 3rd place in the meantime and only had to admit defeat to the German Niklas BUCHHOLZ in the final sprint after 19:13.64 minutes. "The atmosphere in Peuerbach was simply outstanding, the crowd pushed me hard," Frey was very satisfied at the finish.

Elena Burkard wins in the women's aces race

In the women's race over 6 laps or 5,100 meters, the Ethiopian vice world champion over 1,500 meters Axumawit EMBAYE was the clear favorite. And from the beginning she took the lead of the 14-strong field, at the halfway point of the race the Ethiopian already had a seven-second lead over the two German athletes Elena BURKARD and Domenika MAYER. But the longer the race lasted, the closer Burkard got to the favorite and in the last lap the two opponents were on a par. In the last corner, the German attacked irresistibly and celebrated a much-acclaimed victory in Peuerbach after 15:57.41 minutes. This was the first victory by a European woman since 2013. A great performance was offered by Lotte Seiler from Kapfenberg, who secured 4th place in the final sprint against the strong Hungarian Lili Anna Vindics-Toth after 16:40.92.

Record field of participants at the start in nine competitions

With 1,103 registrations and 1,007 finishers, a new record number of participants was set at this year's New Year's Eve Run in Peuerbach, surpassing the record set in 2023 by 25 starters. "That was a wonderful running event in Peuerbach today, the atmosphere was simply great," says Marion Gierlinger from the organizing association IGLA long life. The Int. Raiffeisen New Year's Eve Run Peuerbach with its world-class athletes also offers the largest children's New Year's Eve run in Austria: Almost 500 boys and girls took part in the junior competitions alone, which opened the running day with starts every five minutes. Cheered on by parents and spectators, the stars of tomorrow ran from the sprint over 100 meters to the LONG LIFE mineral water mile over 1,700 meters. The Gebrüder Weiss Volkslauf over 6,800 meters was again a special experience this year, 420 starters in this and the other competitions made Peuerbach the capital of running.

Amanal Petros and Domenika Mayer achieved a German double on home soil at the Hannover Marathon on Sunday (14) with both athletes smashing the course records in the process.

Petros slashed almost one minute from his course record of 2:07:02, successfully defending his title in 2:06:05 despite the blustery conditions on offer in Hannover to win by over one minute from Kenyans Boaz Kipkemei (2:07:06) and Victor Kiplimo (2:09:58).

“I did not expect to run 2:06:05 today. Without the wind I think I would have been around one minute faster,” said Petros who lowered his German record to 2:04:58 in the Berlin Marathon last September.

Petros, who will compete for Germany at the Olympic Games in the marathon in Paris for the second time later this summer, kept something in reserve for the closing stages. He covered the last 2.195km in a fast 6:18 which yielded a negative second half split of 62:54.   

In the women’s race, Mayer had the company of Kenyan veteran Sharon Cherop, the 2011 Boston Marathon champion, until the last five kilometers. Mayer maintained her pace in the latter stages for victory in a course record of 2:23:50 although she missed her lifetime best by an agonizing three seconds. 

“I am really happy with my race. I was surprised that Sharon held on for so long, but I just concentrated on myself and ran my own race. I am now looking forward to the Olympic Marathon. It will of course be a very different race on a hilly course and without pacers,” said Mayer who took almost two minutes off the previous course record of 2:25:45.

Cherop faded back to second but the 40-year-old was also under the previous course record with her time of 2:24:41. 

Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui and Ethiopian Tigest Assefa gear up for the Berlin Marathon showdown, aiming to break records and secure Olympics

Kenyan marathoner Sheila Chepkirui is preparing to compete in the women's contest at the 2023 Berlin Marathon against a formidable Ethiopian lineup, led by the defending champion, Tigest Assefa.

Chepkirui, who finished fourth at the London Marathon last April, carries an impressive personal best of 2:17:29 from the Valencia Marathon last year. 

Assefa made headlines last year by posting an incredible time of 2:15:37 at the Berlin Marathon, setting a new course record and establishing herself as one of the fastest marathon runners in history. 

Chepkirui, a Kenya Defence Forces soldier and a former Africa cross country champion, has already proven her mettle on the international stage by clinching the 10,000m bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK. 

Ethiopian runners dominate the list of fastest women's runners at this year's Berlin Marathon, with Tigist Abayechew (2:18:03), Workenesh Edesa (2:18:51), and Hiwot Gebrekidan (2:19:10) all boasting impressive sub-2:20 times. Amane Beriso, the winner of last year's Valencia Marathon, adds further depth to the Ethiopian contingent.

However, all eyes will be on Chepkirui, who hails from Kiptere Secondary School in Kericho and boasts a remarkable half marathon personal best of 64:36. Her determination to excel is evident, as she aims to make up for her absence at the Boston Marathon last April due to visa issues.

Chepkirui, who runs under the Ikaika Sports stable, is the sole Kenyan representative in the Berlin Marathon after Margaret Wangare withdrew due to injury. Her marathon journey began at last year's Valencia Marathon, where she impressed with a third-place finish and a personal best time of 2:17:29. Now, she is focused on breaking her own record.

"My aim is to break my personal best. I can imagine going through the first half on Sunday in around 68 minutes," said the 32-year-old Chepkirui.

Tigst Assefa, the defending champion, is also eager to make her mark once again in Berlin. Reflecting on her remarkable performance last year, where she shattered the course record, Assefa expressed her delight at returning to the event.

"Last year's race proved an unexpected success for me. I think I can run even faster on Sunday, a further improvement would be a success," said Tigst Assefa. 

While she remains focused on improving her time, she is cautious about discussing the world record of 2:14:04.

Both Chepkirui and Assefa have an additional goal in the BMW Berlin Marathon: securing Olympic qualifying times. Given the fierce competition in Ethiopia and Kenya, achieving the necessary times for Olympic qualification will require exceptional performances.

Two more Ethiopian athletes, Tigist Abayechew with a personal best of 2:18:03 and Workenesh Edesa with a best time of 2:18:51, are making their return to Berlin. Last year, they, along with Tigst Assefa, achieved an unofficial world team record of 6:52:31.

Mark Milde, the race director, expressed optimism about the potential for records to be broken, saying, "The women's course record of 2:15:37 is an absolute world-class time. But, given the strong field, we hope that this can be broken."

The elite women's field at the Berlin Marathon boasts both breadth and depth. Japan's Hitomi Niiya, with a personal best of 2:19:24, has the potential to challenge her national record set 18 years ago on the same course. Another athlete to watch is Ethiopian Senbere Teferi, a world record holder for 5km on the road with a time of 14:29.

In addition to the international competition, a fierce contest is expected among German women. The German contingent, featuring athletes like the Schöneborn twins, Deborah and Rabea, Domenika Mayer, Kristina Hendel, and Laura Hottenrott, has a strong presence with personal bests ranging from 2:25 to 2:27.

This year's BMW BERLIN-MARATHON will take place on September 24 - the sports event is one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. SCC EVENTS, the organizer of the event, is expecting more than 45,000 runners from about 150 nations. In addition to the huge field of amateur athletes, the top international as well as national athletes will be competing.

As already announced in the press release sent out by SCC EVENTS on July 13, 2023, the world record holder Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) and the winner of the TCS London Marathon 2022, Amos Kipruto (KEN), will be at the start in the German capital. With Tigst Assefa (ETH) as course record holder and winner of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2022 and Sheila Chepkirui, winner of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2022, the women's field is just as elite.

The German record holder will be competing

From the ranks of the German starters, Amanal Petros should be the first to be mentioned. The winner of this year's Hannover Marathon holds the German records for both the marathon and half-marathon distances. The MARATHON TEAM BERLIN runner is certainly hoping to achieve a German best time at his race on September 24. At the 2022 European Athletics Championships, Petros won the silver medal in the marathon team classification.

Top German men in Berlin

Amanal Petros stood beside teammates Simon Boch, Konstantin Wedel as well as Hendrik Pfeiffer on the podium in the aforementioned European Championship silver-medal team. All four will be competing at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON. Simon Boch (LG Telis Finanz Regensburg) was German runner-up in the half marathon in the spring and secured the German team title for his team with this performance. Hendrik Pfeiffer, who competes for TK Hannover, won the Hannover Marathon last year. And just like his competition, the 30-year-old is hoping to use the race in Berlin to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris.

European marathon champions at the start

The German women's marathon team was even more successful than the men at the 2022 European Athletics Championships. With the line-up of Miriam Dattke, Domenika Mayer (both LG Telis Finanz Regensburg), Deborah and Rabea Schöneborn (both MARATHON TEAM BERLIN) and Kristina Hendel (LG Braunschweig), they won the gold medal. The mentioned European champions will run at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON. For the women, too, the race in Berlin is considered to be an important milestone to make it to the 2024 Olympic Games.

The cashless online payment system PayPal has also been one of the partners of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON for some time. The German Simon Boch won the 21st Linz Donau Marathon, the unofficial winning time: 2:09:25 hours. A course record was set again for the women. Best Austrian was Matthias Maldet.21st Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon is Simon Boch. He is from Germany. With a time of 2:09:25 hours, he remained well below the course record from the previous year by Ethiopian Fikre Bekele (2:06:13).Four Kenyans landed behind him: Evans Kimtai Kiprono (2:09:25) was second, Kemboi Jackson Rutto (2:12:02) third, Luke Kibet Cheruiyot (2:12:15) fourth, Cornelius Chepkok (2:12: 26) Fifth. Best Austrian was Matthias Maldet in 2:31:04 as seventh.

Course record for women

For the third time in a row, the organizers of the Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon were able to celebrate a course record. The Kenyan Teclah Chebet stayed more than three minutes under the previous record in 2:27:18 hours. The German favorite Domenika Mayer from Regensburg (2:28:47) took second place after surviving the corona infection.

In freezing conditions Germans Hendrik Pfeiffer and Domenika Mayer took the HAJ Hannover Marathon and the national championships which were included in the event. 

Hendrik Pfeiffer clocked 2:10:59 and was well ahead of Kenyan debutant Josphat Kiptis who ran 2:13:47. Martin Olesen of Denmark took third in 2:14:35. Despite temperatures around zero Celsius Domenika Mayer ran a surprisingly strong marathon debut with 2:26:50. German pre-race favourite Rabea Schöneborn was second with 2:27:35 while Croatia’s Matea Parlov Kostro took third in 2:28:39. Hendrik Pfeiffer and the top three women all achieved the qualifying standards for the European and the World Championships. 

In total 18,098 athletes were registered for the 30th edition of the HAJ Hannover Marathon, which is a World Athletics Label Road Race. 3,527 athletes ran the marathon distance. “We are impressed with the event and obviously we were able to make our participants happy,“ said Race Director Stefanie Eichel. Next year organisers hope to be able to come back with a bigger field and with a much stronger elite race. The 31st edition of the HAJ Hannover Marathon is scheduled for 26th March 2023.

A group of eight runners passed the half way mark in 65:25. That was almost exactly as planned. At around 25k Hendrik Pfeiffer began to take the initiative. He broke away with Kenyans Josphat Kiptis and Wilfred Kiptoo. Until the 30k mark they had support of pacemaker and fellow-Kenyan Kiprotich Kirui. With around 12k to go Hendrik Pfeiffer left behind his rivals and was then all alone at the front, building a huge lead. 

“The atmosphere was superb. The spectators helped me getting through the race. It was a bit tough during the final twelve kilometers,“ said Hendrik Pfeiffer, who ran his second fastest marathon in Hannover. The German has a PB of 2:10:18 from 2020. “I have reached all my goals today, which was important for me,“ said Hendrik Pfeiffer, who won the race and his first major German title. Additionally he achieved the qualifying standards for the European and the World Championships.

In the women’s race Domenika Mayer, Rabea Schöneborn and Kenya’s Flomena Ngurais were in the leading group when the half marathon mark was passed in 1:13:36. By 30k pre-race favourite Rabea Schöneborn had lost around 20 seconds and soon after that Flomena Ngurais could not cope with Domenika Mayer’s pace. The Kenyan dropped back to fourth later when Matea Parlov Kostro overtook her around the 40k mark.

"I did not think too much about what could happen. Sometimes in a race it just rolls, sometimes it does not. Today was a good day. I just concentrated on my pacemakers. But the wind was partly disturbing,“ said Domenika Mayer, who is a mother of two. “It was a great debut. Of course I had no clue before what could happen.“ While Domenika Mayer had a promising half marathon PB of 69:52 she had a Corona infection recently. Because of this her triumph was quite a surprise. And she came relatively close to Hannover’s course record: Three years ago Kenya’s Rachel Mutgaa clocked 2:26:15.

Runner-up Rabea Schöneborn ran 2:27:35 which was her second best marathon time. “It was a struggle today and I am happy to have finished,“ she said.
