The 2026 edition of the Bath Half Marathon delivered a memorable day of racing as elite British athletes produced thrilling contests in both the men’s and women’s events through the picturesque streets of Bath.

First staged in 1982, the Bath Half has grown into one of the United Kingdom’s most established road races. Held each March, the event regularly attracts strong domestic fields and serves as a key early-season test for athletes preparing for major spring marathons. This year’s race continued that tradition, featuring dramatic finishes and standout performances across both elite races.

In the men’s race, Joe Wigfield emerged victorious after a tense battle that remained undecided until the closing moments. Wigfield surged ahead in the final stretch to cross the line in 1:02:07, securing the win after a fiercely competitive contest.

Close behind was Phil Sesemann, who fought all the way to the finish but ultimately took second place in 1:02:13, just six seconds adrift of the winner. The battle for the podium remained razor-thin, with Alfie Manthorpe finishing third in 1:02:14, only a single second behind Sesemann after an intense sprint to the line.

While the men’s race delivered high drama, the women’s event belonged to Alex Bell, who produced a brilliant performance to capture victory and set a new personal best. Bell ran with confidence and strength throughout the race, ultimately breaking the tape in 1:09:15, a performance that crowned her the standout star of the women’s field.

She was followed by Jess Warner-Judd, who secured second place with a determined effort, while Lauren McNeil completed the podium in third after a strong showing of her own.

With thrilling finishes, personal milestones, and tightly contested podium battles, the 2026 Bath Half once again proved why it remains one of Britain’s most cherished road races—combining competitive depth with the electric atmosphere of one of the country’s most scenic running routes.

Jake Smith delivered a standout performance at the Bath Half Marathon March 16, clinching victory in 62:20—just 11 seconds off the course record of 62:09. The British distance star dominated a strong field in what served as the official British Athletics trial race for the 2025 World Road Running Championships half marathon team.

Smith Takes Command in Competitive Race

Smith led the charge on the flat and fast Bath course, fending off Ethiopia’s Omar Ahmed, who finished second in 62:43, and Dewi Griffiths, who secured third in 63:03. With near-perfect conditions, the front pack pushed the pace early, but it was Smith who had the strength to pull away in the final stages.

While his time of 62:20 fell just outside the 62:00 World Championship qualifying mark, Smith has until May 11 to hit the standard and officially book his spot for Team GB in the World Road Running Championships later this year.

Smith’s victory in Bath reinforces his position as one of Britain’s top half marathoners and sets him up for another shot at breaking the 62-minute barrier before the qualification deadline. With his continued progress, he looks primed to challenge the best on the global stage.

The Bath Half Marathon once again proved to be one of the most exciting road races in the UK, with elite runners making the most of its fast course and deep competition. As the road to the World Championships continues, all eyes will be on Smith to see if he can break 62:00 and punch his ticket to the global stage.

British duo impress at the 2024 adidas Manchester Marathon

Sunday saw over 32,000 runners take the streets of Manchester to cover the 26.2 miles on one of the flattest courses in the UK.

On a day helped by perfect weather conditions, Adam Clarke from Aldershot, Farnham and District AC took the elite men’s title after completing the marathon in 2:16:29.

It was a comfortable race for the 33-year-old as he soared ahead from the leaders at the 18-mile mark, completing the race with a lead of just over two minutes.

The Brit has been training alongside his partner, Charlotte Purdue, who was recently named in the first wave of Olympic marathon selections for the British team ahead of the Paris Games.

Behind Clarke was Marshall Smith from Ashford AC who finished second with 2:18:22 as Alexander Teuten from Southampton AC took bronze clocking 2:18:37.

Charlie Arnell, from MK Distance Project, made her marathon debut as she was the first woman through the finish with 2:37:12. The Brit ran 77:27 at the Bath Half Marathon in March.

Arnell finished almost five minutes clear of Melissah Gibson from Ealing Eagles Running Club (2:42:09) who finished in second with a great run considering she ran 100km just over two weeks ago at the Sri Chinmoy 100km in Perth.

Gibson, who completed 16 marathons last year, finished second at those trials which booked her a place on the IAU World 100km Championship team set to compete in India later this year.

Finishing in third behind Gibson in Manchester was Anna Lawson from Clapham Chasers, clocking an impressive PB of 2:43:32 having not started with the elite field.

Among the notable figures joining the mass field of participants, the event also saw multiple world records set.

Almost impossible to miss were a group of six participants, Marcus Green, Rich Bidgood, Hugh Tibbs, Nick Wright, David Mills and James Bewley dressed as a caterpillar, setting a world record for the fastest marathon in a six-person costume (2:57:31).

Christian Howett ran the full marathon in a pair of crocs, finishing in 2:58:54 which saw him claim the world record.
