Irine Cheptai Earns World Athletics Fair Play Award Nomination After Heartwarming Gesture At Sydney Marathon!

Kenyan distance-running star Irine Cheptai has earned international recognition for a remarkable act of kindness and sportsmanship that demonstrated the true spirit of athletics, securing her place among the three finalists for the prestigious 2026 World Athletics International Fair Play Award.

Cheptai's nomination follows a memorable moment during the Sydney Marathon, where she put competition aside to help Australian Paralympic marathoner Michael Roeger, offering a powerful reminder that humanity and respect can be just as important as winning.

The incident happened at approximately the 30-kilometre mark, when Roeger encountered difficulties accessing the hydration stations positioned along the right-hand side of the course. Born without his lower right arm, the Australian athlete faced an additional challenge collecting drinks while maintaining his rhythm during the demanding race.

Noticing his situation, Cheptai responded without hesitation by sharing her own water bottle with him. It was a simple but extraordinary gesture, particularly in the closing stages of a marathon when every second, every movement and every ounce of energy can make a difference.

What made the moment even more special was that both athletes were competing at an exceptionally high level. Roeger went on to finish in 2:18:36, establishing a new T46 marathon world record, while Cheptai delivered an outstanding performance to finish second in the women's race in 2:22:11.

Although the Sydney Marathon produced impressive performances and memorable results, Cheptai's selfless intervention became one of the defining stories of the event. Her actions demonstrated that sporting excellence is not measured exclusively by finishing times, medals or records, but also by the values athletes demonstrate when faced with opportunities to help others.

Being named among the three finalists for the World Athletics International Fair Play Award is a fitting recognition of a moment that resonated far beyond the marathon course.

For Cheptai, the gesture may have lasted only a few seconds, but its message carries much greater significance. In a sport where athletes push their physical and mental limits in pursuit of personal glory, she showed that compassion and competitive spirit can exist side by side.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments in sport are not about who finishes first, but about who chooses to make a difference along the way.

Irine Cheptai has reminded the athletics world that true champions are recognised not only by what they achieve, but also by how they treat others.
