Habtom Samuel Dominates Boston Half Marathon In Sub-60-Minute Masterclass As Fentaye Belayneh Edges Winfred Mbithe In Thrilling Women’s Finish!

The 2026 Boston Half Marathon delivered an impressive showcase of international road-running talent, with Eritrea’s Habtom Samuel producing a commanding performance to capture the men's title, while Ethiopia’s Fentaye Belayneh narrowly defeated Kenya’s Winfred Mbithe in an exciting women's contest.

Samuel was the standout performer of the men's race, stopping the clock at 59:49 to comfortably break the one-hour barrier. The Eritrean distance-running star demonstrated his strength and class throughout the contest, establishing a decisive advantage over his closest challengers and securing an emphatic victory.

Kenya's Andrea Kiptoo finished second in 1:01:03, while compatriot Abel Kipchumba completed the podium in third place with 1:01:16. Samuel's winning margin of 1 minute and 14 seconds underlined his superiority on the day.

The men's race was particularly impressive for Samuel, who became the only athlete among the top three to finish inside the 60-minute mark. His performance highlighted his ability to maintain an exceptional pace over the demanding 21.1-kilometre distance.

Kiptoo and Kipchumba, meanwhile, ensured a strong Kenyan presence on the men's podium. Their performances demonstrated the depth of Kenyan talent in international road racing, although neither could match Samuel's decisive winning pace.

The women's competition offered a completely different kind of excitement, with the outcome remaining finely balanced between the leading contenders. Ethiopia's Fentaye Belayneh eventually emerged victorious after a determined battle with Kenya's Winfred Mbithe, crossing the finish line in 1:09:14.

Mbithe pushed her Ethiopian rival all the way but had to settle for second place in 1:09:16, just two seconds behind the winner. Such a narrow margin illustrated how closely matched the two athletes were, with every second proving crucial in determining the final outcome.

Another Ethiopian athlete, Sintayehu Lewetegn, secured third place in 1:09:26, completing a strong Ethiopian presence among the leading women. She finished 10 seconds behind Mbithe and 12 seconds behind the race winner.

Belayneh's victory was particularly significant given the quality of the opposition she faced. Holding off a determined Kenyan challenger over the final stages required composure, strength and a strong finishing effort, qualities that ultimately secured her the Boston title.

The results once again underlined the remarkable influence of East African athletes in international distance running. Ethiopia, Kenya and Eritrea all featured prominently, providing a compelling demonstration of the region's continued excellence across road-running competitions.

From Samuel's impressive sub-one-hour victory to the thrilling two-second difference in the women's race, the 2026 Boston Half Marathon delivered memorable performances and another exciting chapter in international road racing.
