Roger Bannister was the first runner to run the mile in under four minutes. He ran 3:59.4 on May 6, 1954. Don Bowden (pictured) was the first American to go under four minutes. He ran 3:58.7 on June 1, 1957. According to the website LetsRun "Emmanuel Bor of the U.S. Army WCAP became the 500th American to break 4:00 in the mile, running a time (3:58.77) eerily similar to Bowden’s original mark on a bouncy, banked indoor oval at Boston University on Saturday."
