British distance runner Patrick Dever has been officially upgraded to third place at the 2025 New York City Marathon following the disqualification of Albert Korir due to a doping violation.
Dever, who was making his marathon debut, originally crossed the line in fourth place in a time of 2:08:58—just one second behind Korir. With Korir’s result now annulled, the Brit steps onto the podium in what becomes one of the most remarkable debut performances in recent New York City Marathon history.
The adjustment comes after Korir tested positive for CERA (Continuous Erythropoietin Receptor Activator), a banned performance-enhancing substance, in three out-of-competition tests conducted last October. He admitted to the violations on January 12, leading to a five-year ban and the disqualification of all results from October 3 onward.
For Dever, the revised result underscores both his potential and the integrity of the sport. Running one of the closest finishes of the race, he demonstrated composure and strength on a challenging course that demands tactical awareness as much as physical endurance.
While podium upgrades are never the way athletes hope to earn recognition, Dever’s performance stands on its own merit. His 2:08:58 debut signals the arrival of a serious contender on the global marathon stage and provides a strong foundation for future major appearances.
The reshuffling of results also serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for clean sport. As governing bodies continue to strengthen testing and enforcement, outcomes like this—though delayed—help reinforce fairness for athletes competing within the rules
For now, Patrick Dever’s name is rightfully etched into the top three of one of the world’s most iconic races—a result earned on the roads of New York and confirmed in the record books.

The entry fee was $1 and the total event budget...
