Things can fall apart so quickly while running a marathon Sara Hall writes

Tokyo— man this one will haunt me for a while.

Came through halfway in one of those days where you’re just flowing, where the whole course feels downhill. I was on track for my fastest marathon in 4 years, which is what I felt capable of. But then not long after halfway the cramps started in my legs, and after trying to work through them for 4 miles, they shut me down hard at 29k.

I might race a lot of marathons, but I’m all-in and care deeply about each one. I looked forward to those roads so much and they did not disappoint — and think I’ll always remember how fun that first half was. I’m left with a lot of frustration with myself for not doing better with the things I could control and a lot of “what could have been.”

But…

We take a swing.

We miss at times, and when we do,

We learn.

We give ourselves grace.

We go again.

See you in Boston in 7 weeks.
