| Recovery run after finishing the W.E.S.T 218 mile Ultra in Australia earlier in the week... Getting lost is one of the interesting things that can happen during a trail race. This race probably set a record when the entire field went the wrong way within a minute of the start, turning left instead of right. The back of the pack where I was figured it out first and turned around after about half a mile, but the front of the pack kept on for over a couple miles! As a result, yours truly was actually one of the leaders of the race for almost the first 10 miles! That was my first bonus mile.
During the second day, I missed a right turn because the map of the course that I was following on my watch showed the route going straight. After a bit less than a mile, I ended up in a maze of backroads with no clue where to go next. After trying all the branches (and even some cross country) I finally followed my route backwards and found the turn I missed, which was marked with both a sign and a flag. My second bonus mile,
The race was 218 miles but I covered 225 miles with the detours.

| (As posted on FB) The 218 mile (well, 225 with "detours") Delirious W.E.S.T. trail race in Australia was a lot of fun. I'll probably make several posts as I sort through some of the photos I took. One of my hopes for the race was a snake encounter! I had five sightings, and two were of the close variety. I rounded a bend in the trail and came to a screeching halt in front of this guy - a five foot brown snake in the middle of the trail. He obligingly stayed put while I got a picture, but when he moved, it was lightning fast. He was gone in a flash. Brown snakes are the number one killer in Australia - not because they are the most venomous, but because they like to hang out near housing. |
