The Maui Marathon features one of the most scenic courses in the world – a point-to-point route that starts in Kahulu, passes sugar cane fields, and then hugs the spectacular Pacific coast line for more than 17 breath taking miles before the race finish in Ka’anapoli.
Scenic beauty, however, is only one of the things this event has going for it. One of the three oldest marathons west of the Mississippi and the longest consecutively held running event in the state of Hawaii, the Maui Marathon originated on Oahu in the early 1940s.
By 1974, the race had become officially known as the Maui Marathon. Although small in numbers compared to the world-famous Honolulu Marathon, the Maui Marathon now attracts about 3,000 runners annually and in 2004 raised $100,000 for various charity groups.
It has been chosen as one of the top 10 Most Scenic Marathons in the nation by Runner’s World magazine (Feb. 96), and the #10 destination marathon in North America, by the Ultimate Guide to Marathons.
The Maui Marathon has developed a reputation over the years as a quality running event. This is due in great part to the many volunteers and community support generated, year after year, for this charity fund-raising running event.
What most people don’t know is that the Maui Marathon originated on Oahu in the early 1940s. At that time the event was known as the Hawaiian A.A.U. (Amateur Athletic Union) Marathon. During the 30s and 40s, Hawaii’s top runner was Norman Tamanaha, who competed successfully on the mainland and was considered one of America’s top marathon athletes.

The Gifu Seiryu Half Marathon is an annual half marathon road running competition held in Gifu, Japan.
First held in 2011, the race is also called the Naoko Takahashi Cup, named after Naoko Takashi, the retired local runner who won the marathon at the 2000 Sidney Olympics and broke the marathon world record in 2001, becoming the first woman to complete the distance in under two hours and twenty minutes. The first edition featured top level and popular sections for the half marathon as well as a shorter 3-kilometre fun run. All the funds raised during the event went towards the reconstruction effort following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and Tsunami.
Some 9000 people took part in the inaugural event including elite Kenyan runners Martin Mathathi and Catherine Ndereba.

Now in its 30th year, the idea for this fundraiser was presented to the Friends of CCVI by the former Michael Forbes Restaurants, Inc., which owned two restaurants, four miles apart in the heart of Kansas City and The Plaza shopping area. The four-mile course follows the old streetcar/trolley tracks and hence, the name, Trolley Run.
Trolley Run is the largest annual fundraiser for CCVI and provides a critical funding in the CCVI programming budget. Trolley Run has succeeded through the generous support of our individual and corporate sponsors, including longtime title sponsor Sabates Eye Centers and many others.
Over the years, the Trolley Run has become one of the largest timed four-mile run in the United States, and the first major run in Kansas City to use chip technology for race results.
