The Coolest Marathon on Earth.
Welcome to an extraordinary marathon in truly magnificent scenery:
Combine your visit to remote Greenland with a unique Arctic race. Run on the vast ice sheet and experience breathtaking polar landscapes in this challenging running event.
The Polar Circle Marathon - often referred to as "the Coolest Marathon on Earth" takes place in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. The endless ice and arctic tundra of this vast country make up the backdrop of this unusual race in which runners pass glacier tongues, moraine landscapes and the soundless, arctic desert. This is a rare opportunity to visit one of the most remote corners of the world, while daring to take part of an extremely challenging running event.
A part of the route takes place on the ice cap itself, but the main part of the course is run on the gravel road (often snow covered) that connects the ice sheet with the small township of Kangerlussuaq, just north of the Polar Circle.

It starts in Stra, a small village located at about 25 km west of Venice, at the beginning of the Riviera del Brenta, a beautiful area near the River Brenta, where the rich and noble Venetians built their summer homes for vacation in the eighteenth century.
In this area is the famous Villa Pisani at Stra, the "Queen of the Venetian Villas". In its rooms Doges, kings and emperors have been hosted in the past. Now is a national museum that exposes great art works of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries including masterpieces of Tiepolo.
The marathon runs through the center of Marghera and Mestre, continues for more than 2 km within the San Giuliano Park until Venice crossing the Ponte della Libertà..

Course overview
Start is located in Stra (a small country town about 25 kms west of Venice), along the Brenta Riviera, the beautiful riverside area where rich and noble Venetians built their vacation mansions in the 18th century.
The finish is in the historic centre of Venice, after passing through St. Mark’s square on to the Riva Sette Martiri, along the lagoon facing St George island.
The first part of the course, along the Riviera del Brenta, touches an environment rich with history, culture and beautiful landscapes, marked by the numerous Venetian villas facing the waters of the river.
The marathon moves through the centre of Marghera and Mestre, then runs for more than 2 kilometers inside the San Giuliano Park and moves on to Venice over the Liberty Bridge, for a little less than 4 kilometers.
The race then enters the city's renovated port area and reaches the city centre for the last kilometers, which are simply unique and unforgettable. The runners proceed alongside the Giudecca Canal to Punta della Dogana, where they cross the Grand Canal on a bridge, especially built for the race.
Passing through Piazza San Marco with the cathedral and the Palazzo Ducale, the marathon course continues on to the finish in Riva Sette Martiri.
Course difficulty
The Venice marathon course is basically flat and fast. There are just a few difficulties, represented by 3-4 short slopes (100 meters or so) between the 25th and 35th kilometer.
In the final part of the marathon course (last 3 kilometers), runners will face 14 little bridges over Venice's canals. Wooden ramps are put in place to prevent athletes from running on the steps.
There are no cobblestones on the course (apart from the last 100 meters before the finish line). In the final 3 kilometres the running surface will be mainly made of large rectangular stone slabs.
The course is entirely closed to traffic and every kilometer is marked.
Course highlights
Riviera del Brenta, with several 18th century mansions along the course (in particular the impressive "Villa Pisani" at the start). Zattere, a 2-km-long embankment next to the Giudecca Canal, where athletes run close to the water.
The Bridge over the Grand Canal, a 170-meters-long bridge which is built just before the marathon and dismantled the night after.
Piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale, historical Venice landmarks.
Finish line in Riva Sette Martiri, in the picturesque waterfront of St. Mark's Basin.

Once upon a time… How could we imagine one day of March 1979, the idea of organizing a race opened to everyone between Marseilles and Cassis could take such an International dimension?
A very young athletic section, a group of close friends and the unfailing support of every sections of an “omnisport” club, the SCO Ste Marguerite, gave birth to the first French Classic race.
With 700 runners for its first Edtion, this race where the popular and convivial spirit rules welcome every year more and more enthusiasts and count from now 12,000 participants.
Such a keen interest for the race contributed to other events on the occasion of the last week end of October.
Since 1990, the ramble “L’Autre Marseille-Cassis” organized the day before the Classic in the massif of the “Calanques” gathered 1,800 walkers and is directed to the awareness of everyone for the environment and assets respect.
The sporty ramble created in 2006 gives the possibility to a lot of walkers to follow the runners to reach the Gineste under another form of sport.
This success, built over 30 years of existence, belongs to the 600 volunteers of the SCO Ste Marguerite who never hesitate to mobilize themselves to welcome a thousand of people in the best conditions.
Jemal Yimer and Edith Chelimo ran to convincing victories at the Marseille Cassis, the demandingIAAF Silver Label Road Racewhose 39th edition took place on Sunday (29).
Yimer was one of the main pre-race favourites, although an unknown factor had remained: how would the 21-year-old Ethiopian manage his first effort over the 20km distance?
He responded in high style.
A group of ten runners including the favourites –Yimer, Evans Cheruiyot, Wilfried Kimeli Kimetei, the Moroccan pair Abdenasir Fahti and Hamza Sahili, Terefa Deleba, Felicien Muhitira as well as Tesfaye Ambesa-- passed five kilometres in 15:32. Nobody was anxious to take the lead, explaining the sluggish pace. Perhaps they dreaded the tough 327-metre climb up to the Col de la Gineste, thus continued to keep an eye on each other until they reached the summit, passing the 10-kilometre mark in 31:39.

The First Annual Buffalo to Niagara Skylon International Marathon took place on Saturday, October 26th, 1974. It was a great success right away. The organizers were very excited about the number of participants and the publicity that the sponsor Skylon Tower got.
The Marathon quickly became a favorite and by 1976 it attracted more than 3,000 runners, surpassing the New York and Boston marathons in that same year.
In 1977 the race was renamed the Skylon International Marathon until 1985 when the name was changed to the Buffalo / Niagara Falls International Marathon.
In 1980 and 1984 the course was used for the men’s US Olympic marathon trials. Anthony Sandoval set a course record with a time of 2:10:19 in 1980 during the US Olympics trials race which has yet to be beaten.
In 1985 there was a special “Peace Bridge Trophy” which was presented to the first man and first woman to step foot in Canada. The Marathon ceased to exist after 1986 due to lack of sponsorship however the race continued in the US under the name Buffalo Marathon…a race that continues to this day.
The marathon was revived in 1998 under the new name Casino Niagara International Marathon with Casino Niagara as the title sponsor.
A half marathon was established in 2001, drawing additional participants to the race. The half marathon also offers a walking division.
Nicole Stevenson set a course record for women in 2004 with a time of 2:37:08 which has also yet to be beaten.
