Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Distance: 10K · 5K · 5k Fitness Walk
Offical Race Web Site
In 1977 Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri established The Great Race as a community “fun run.” Eleven years later, Mayor Caliguiri died of amyloidosis, a rare protein disorder in which one or more organ systems in the body accumulate deposits of abnormal proteins known as amyloid.
Each year The Great Race donates $1 from every Great Race and Junior Great Race registration to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, a fund held by the Pittsburgh Foundation that is dedicated to supporting medical research.
Each year on the last Sunday of September, the starting gun sounds for a world-class road race that has become a true Pittsburgh tradition for the past 36 years. The Great Race – established as a 10K race by the late Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri – has attracted more than a quarter million participants since 1977. Over the years, this popular fall fitness classic has grown to include a 5K run/walk, running clinic, two-day expo and children’s race…with more than 16,000 individuals taking part in these various activities annually.

Distance: Marathon

The Kosice Peace Marathon is the oldest European marathon.
This year for the organizers of Kosice Peace Marathon is also about memories and flashbacks. One of the fastest marathon courses has been created in Košice 20 years ago on that occasion it was the 1997 IAAF World Half Marathon Champioships. Tegla Loroupe and Shem Kororia were awarded from the hands of IAAF President Primo Nebiolo on October 4, 1997.
That course is still fast and very attractive for both elite and all runners.
The Kosice Peace Marathon is an opportunity for every runner to take their family and friends and visit Košice, the gothic pearl of the Europe, European Capital of Culture 2013 and the Best European City of Sport 2016. Discover the place, where the fundamentals of modern marathon movement were set in 1924.

About the course.
This inner-city circuit is based on the original course set up for the World Half-marathon Championships in 1997. There are no prominent uphill sections, and the streets are fully asphalt surfaced. The marathon course consists of two laps, while the half-marathon runners complete just one. The marathon, as the main discipline of the KPM has IAAF and AIMS certificates issued for its course. Additional disciplines take place in parts and sections of this urban circuit, and their competitive distance is not subject to such international certifications.
A fast marathon course must be distinguished by several positive parameters. In addition to the low number of directional changes or sharp turns, the elevation profile is also obviously important. In Košice it was possible to create a course which from this point of view satisfied even the most demanding criteria.
In Berlin, where several world records have been run, the course has 21 directional changes that are relatively sharp or equal to 90° turns. In Košice the number of such changes in direction over both laps of the course is equally low.
If we take a closer look at the elevation profile of the course, we see that the elevation between the lowest and highest-lying points achieves on the city circuit in Košice only 16.35 m (200.700 m above sea level to 217.050 m a.s.l). Another major factor, the total of all climbs on the marathon course, in Košice adds up to only 74 metres. For comparison, the elevation difference in Berlin is 25.6 m (the sum of climbs is 37 m) and, for example, in Boston, 146.3 m (a sum of 241 m).
All the fast marathon courses must have couple of positive parameters. Besides very few direction changes or sharp turns it is of course the elevation profile. In Košice there is a course meeting the most challenging criteria. In Berlin where plenty of world records have been set up there are 21 direction changes on the course in the angle equal 90ËÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÃÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÅ¡or even sharper. In Košice the number of such direction changes on the full marathon course is the same low.
If we have a closer look to its elevation profile we will find out that difference between the lowest point on this Košice city circuit and its peak is only 16,35 m (200,7 m above sea level – 217,05 m a.s.l.). The cumulative elevation gain on the marathon course is then 74 meters.
For your information in Berlin the difference between lowest and highest point is 25,6 m (cumulative elevation gain 37 m) and in Boston 146,3m (cumulative elevation gain 241 m).

Utrecht, Netherlands
Distance: 10K
Offical Race Web Site
The competition, which roughly translates as the Utrecht Canal Run, was initiated by Nico Munzert and had its first edition on May 30.1925. The race, which followed the banks of Utrecht's canals over a 4700-meter-long course, had garnered over 100 participants by 1931, but the crowds of spectators were much larger with over 75,000 people gathering to witness the event.
The length of the race was extended in 1937, but the event suffered interruption in this period, being absent between 1940 and 1946 due to World War II and undergoing cancellations in 1950 and 1955. The 25th edition of the race was held in 1956.
The current course for the Singelloop has a singular clock-wise loop format within the city, which begins near Lepelenburg Park, passes along Utrecht's canals, then finishes near Wilhelminapark.
The course records are very impressive:
26:44 WR 2010 Leonard Komon (KEN)
31:20 2013 Joyce Chepkirui (KEN)

History
Partly thanks to a rich history, Singelloop Utrecht is known both nationally and internationally as a unique running event. The largest in Utrecht with a super fast track, excellent and innovative organization, enthusiastic crowd along the course and a unique atmosphere in the Utrecht city center. The stately Maliebaan and monumental Wilhelmina park are two real Utrecht locations that contribute to the special atmosphere of this event that can count on a lot of interest every year.
In the anniversary book, Pim van Esschoten writes: "The history of the Singelloop has beautiful years and also editions sans histoire. There are years that there is no Singel Run at all.The event comes back strongly three times. At the sixtieth edition in 2010 it is in a new flowering period. This resilience has two sources: the beauty of the course and the history of the course.Together they make the Singelloop a monument. "
Singelloop Utrecht proudly bears the banner of oldest streets in the Netherlands. The first edition took place in 1925. In 1928 there were only 37 participants.Along the course, no fewer than 100,000 people will be public. The start was at the Smakkelaarsveld in Utrecht. The city center of Utrecht is the beautiful backdrop for spectators every year to encourage the runners.Images such as on the right show the historical value of the event.
Leonard Komon (pictured left in 2017) wrote on Sunday, September 26th, 2010 history in the 60thedition in Utrecht to run a world record. The 22-year-old Kenyan long distance runner finished in a time of 26 minutes and 44 seconds and was 17 seconds faster than his compatriot Micah Kogo.To this day, the world record on the road has not yet improved. In 2017 Komon returned to Utrecht and finished third."Utrecht gives me a warm feeling. The start on the Maliebaan, the route through the city center and the public along the course. This is a unique event, I am proud to have walked the world record here. "
