3 mile run on the trail at 9:11 per. 2 mile walk cool down. Tough day yesterday with some not good news and some a little better. CT scan showed some spread of my “issue” but the good news is that blood work showed that it isn’t widespread. Meeting surgeon on Monday. Tomorrow and Sunday I run.

Back onto the trail for the first time in 5-6 weeks. None too soon. It doesn’t look like I’ll finish the challenge this time. Biopsy result back from my Dr this morning unfortunately confirmed cancer. I’ll find out Thursday how advanced it is & whether it has spread. I have an appointment with a surgeon on Friday. Til then, I’ll run. Once I beat this, I’ll run some more too. Count on it. Count me in.

Nice run in Central Park. Cool & breezy. Lots of folks in town out for a shakeout run before tomorrow’s half marathon. It’s been my dream for a couple of years to get healthy enough to run in a way that resembles even slightly what I know and remember from 50 years of running. A grateful glimpse today. Thank you universe.

2 weeks ago couldn’t have done this and now it’s a rest day. Grateful. One of the many things I love about running & living in NYC is taking the subway somewhere and running home.

Nice recovery walk through the park on the closest thing we’ve had to a spring day this year.
3/11/19 4.75 Miles 39:36 8:21 Central Park (US)
It’s a real relief to find that I can run again. I’m bumping up against my (lack of) fitness for this kind of running but not health issues that have prevented it for a long time. Lack of fitness is way easier than the latter. I saw the squirrel in the park on my walk home. He seemed quite impressed and happy for me too.

4.01mi @ 8:51 per. Last in 8:38. Grateful for a list of doctors who’ve conspired beautifully to figure out some complex issues and to put me back together again. Long time coming. The picture is of my studio which also serves as something of a locker room, a good one. .

3/1/19 4.02 Miles 36:48 9:10 Stratford (US)
Let’s do this. A little slippery on the road and unfortunately my trail options are gone for a few more weeks. A tough 3 weeks with some medical stuff but cleared to go.
2/3/19 7.01 Miles 1:07:10 9:35 (US)
2/1/19 6.00 Miles 55:57 9:20 Trumbull (US)
Getting there. Another steady 6. A fair bit of ice in the woods so I had to build a new pair of screw shoes out of an old pair of shoes. Good report from Dr. He’s pleased and I am too.
1/30/19 4.01 Miles 37:22 9:20 Trumbull (US)
Some black ice in the woods (rain last night and then a hard freeze) made it a bit slippery but not impossible. 2” of snow late today and sub zero tonight and tomorrow might mark the end of running the trail until spring. January 30th might be the latest into winter I’ve been in the woods on dry footing in memory. The last 2 weeks has been a breakthrough in terms of my heart having healed enough to run nonstop. An appointment with my Dr tomorrow to see if everything is as it seems. I think so.
1/29/19 6.00 Miles 57:14 9:33 Trumbull (US)
A little snow. More to come and bitter cold to follow. So it goes. Another good run. 6 miles non stop. A little stronger (or maybe it’s less physically limited or constrained) every week. Grateful and enjoying every step.
1/27/19 7.00 Miles 1:06:26 9:30 Trumbull (US)
Another good January day. 45 & no snow on the trail. Things are coming along nicely. My 7 miles today was a new longest nonstop run in a year. A 9:49 first mile up the hill was a good sign, everything after was between 9:10 & 9:38. Steady. Ran out of gas in the last mile but hung in there. I’ve been through enough of the healing issues to know that it’s not a straight line. Today was a good day and I’m grateful for it. Tough days are bound to come too. I’ll listen to my body and be patient with it. This I know.
1/25/19 6.00 Miles 59:15 9:53 Trumbull (US)
Can’t beat a sunny 40 degree day in late January. 2” of rain knocked down the ice & snow and then 40mph winds dried it all out. My third non stop run for the week. 300’ climb on the way up the trail with a steady wind in my face was challenging but it was a nice ride back down. #grateful
1/23/19 4.01 Miles 37:25 9:20 Stratfotd (US)
Hmmm. My last mile yesterday was something of a harbinger for today. I finished up my longest run in a year in 9:18. I expected to struggle today but instead averaged 9:18 for 4. My last today in 9:06. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt even semi normal running and I’m here to say it feels good.
1/22/19 6.02 Miles 59:30 9:54 Stratford (US)
Cold day. High temp of 11 and breezy. Brrr. Longest non stop run in about a year, slow as heck but faster than walking and thankfully it generated more heat too. Dr said it would take 6-8 months to heal up fully, I’m just a week past 7 months and about 900 miles of walking & jogging my way to being able to run a bit so I may be right on schedule. It’s hard to tell how much of my limitations are from lack of fitness and how much from healing still ahead. There was a rock band in the 60s called Blind Faith, yeah I’m going with that as my guiding principle, one step at a time.

Bob, a day off for me but I just noticed that I’m being credited with about 125 miles in the current period that belong in the weeks between challenge 1 and 2. At the time I didn’t realize miles were being tracked between challenges. When I saw that you we’re pushing on to reach 100,000 miles I went back and put in the miles for the correct weeks but they appear to be showing up now and have pushed me to a place in the standings that I definitely have not earned. Can you fix? Do I need to do it on my end? Sorry about that.
1/19/19 7.02 Miles 1:13:15 10:27 Stratfotd (US)
Doubled back and did my Sunday run on Saturday due to the bad weather and sub zero windchill forecast for Sunday. On the pavement for the first time in a while.
1/18/19 6.02 Miles 1:00:15 10:01 Trumbull (US)
Almost a non stop 6. 2x1 min walk recovery when HR spiked. First snow in the woods. More to come. Hopefully not enough to keep me off the trail for an extended time.
1/17/19 3.35 Miles 47:00 14:02 Trumbull (US)
Easy day.
1/16/19 4.05 Miles 41:16 10:12 Trumbull (US)
Same walk-run on a recovery day as last Tuesday. 1 min walk, 2 min run x 13 :50 sec faster than last week & HR avg 5 Bpm lower. 27 min of the 41 min was running, 14 min walking and still not far over 10 min per mile. Little victories. My hat is a souvenir from Jenny Holzer’s landmark contemporary art exhibition in 2002 and isn’t such a bad mantra for us runners.
1/15/19 6.36 Miles 1:01:36 9:42 Trumbull (US)
2 min walk to warmup, 20 min slow run up the hill, 2 min recovery, 37:36 steady run to finish. HR got up there for a few minutes at the end but mostly good. Progress. Grateful still to be on the trail this far into January but snow in the forecast for Friday and again on Sunday. 19th anniversary with Kristen, she’s in Manila til March so I’ll cook for one and Skype with her at some point..

My usual 6 on the trail with an old running friend. Repeats of 2 minutes of walking & 10 minutes of running each way. Slow on the uphill and less slow on the way back down. Every mile is a good mile.

Wanted to run but thought better of it after yesterday’s effort and did a good brisk walk.
12/16/18 9.65 Miles 1:22:30 8:33 Trumbull (US)
Didn’t feel like running today but all the way back in the 1970s I learned or noticed that when I didn’t feel running I often had the most satisfying runs. It was in the 30s, rainy & windy when I got to the trail. I was the only person there. I felt like stopping in the first 1/4 mile but figured I was already wet and out there and just kept going. After 4 miles I finally found a little bit of rhythm and decided to stop thinking about it and just run until I couldn’t. Longest run in at least 18 months. Way more miles over 10 minutes per than under 9 these days. My heart rate was higher than my Dr would like it. I’m sure I’ll pay for the irrationally exuberant exertion tomorrow but I’m good with that.
12/14/18 5.84 Miles 1:17:00 13:12 Trumbull (US)
Rest day. Walk & jog on the way out and good walk on the way back.
12/13/18 4.00 Miles 39:00 9:45 Trumbull. (US)
Blowing snow flurries & quiet in the woods. Not a soul (or sole) in sight for the first time in probably a year. Love the quiet.

A bit of a digital vacation since Sunday. Back on the trail today, 175yds at 8:30 pace x15 with a 175 yard walk recovery on the way out, slow run on the way back, 9:20, 8:45, 9:09. Cold & bright day. Early sunset over the ridge, photo at 1pm.

12/2/18 8.02 Miles 1:24:00 10:29 Trumbull (US)
Very rainy 8. A couple of minutes faster than last week and avg HR down from 132 to 122. Ran 15x176 yds at 8:30 pace with a 176 yd walk between and finished up with a slow 5 miles. No pictures today so I’ll just share one of my paintings, from 2011.
11/30/18 4.02 Miles 38:09 9:30 Trumbull (US)
Another steady 4. I always take Saturday off in hopes of a longer effort on Sunday. As I’ve gotten healthier and a little stronger, muscle memory from a lot of miles over a lot of years keeps my leg turnover higher than it should be for my fitness and for the pace I can manage now-a-days, that was the battle today. No complaint, just the facts..
11/29/18 6.29 Miles 1:39:00 15:45 Trumbull (US)
A day and a half before the beginning of December and magic hour begins at 1:40pm in the northeastern US...a nice day for a good steady recovery day walk.
11/28/18 4.01 Miles 37:44 9:25 Trumbull (US)
Yesterday was an experiment to see whether I could do a little more work than usual and still recover. Today’s test was to be an easy 4 mi run. It was pretty evident early on that I hadn’t recovered. The first 2 miles on the trail climb about 200ft and my legs were seriously dead. I stopped at the turnaround and stretched for a few minutes and was surprised to find my legs and feel better on the way back, yes it was downhill but not usually quite so much difference in a given run. Tomorrow will definitely be just a walk to recover before trying again on Friday.
11/27/18 6.10 Miles 1:10:00 11:29 Trumbull (US)
An experiment today. My rest day recently has been a 6 mile walk. Not too long ago the same was my long day. Today I walked & jogged the 6 miles (176 yards jogging, 176 yards walking for the full 6 miles). I wanted to see if I can recover doing a little more. Will know tomorrow!
11/26/18 4.01 Miles 40:12 10:02 Trumbull (US)
Doubled back from my “long day” yesterday with 4. Tired legs but in a good way. Slow but running!
11/25/18 8.01 Miles 1:24:00 10:30 Trumbull (US)
3 miles of alternating 176 yards running and 176 yards walking as a warmup on the uphill side and a non stop 5 mile slow run to finish up. A new longest run since getting patched up again. I think the last time I made it 5 miles was Dec of last year. Photo by Kristen as I was finishing up my run and yes, happy and smiling.
11/23/18 4.51 Miles 42:00 9:19 Central Park NYC (US)
Longest non stop run since last year and a little faster to boot. Healing is coming along right on the timetable the Dr. gave me and actually seems to be accelerating. I’m guessing all of the walking & attempts to walk and jog over the months developed more base fitness than it felt like at the time and finally the healing is catching up and letting me tap into it. A cold & breezy but beautiful day in the park and sunset is so early! Hard to believe the days are going to keep getting shorter for another month.
11/21/18 4.25 Miles 42:00 9:53 Central Park (US)
My annual night run in Central Park on Thanksgiving Eve, down the westside past the staging area for the Macy’s parade tomorrow across the park and up the eastside to the reservoir and one lap around to look at one of the best views of the NYC skyline at night. Back to Broadway and a subway ride home. My first nonstop run in Central Park in almost a year. Slow but happy.
11/20/18 6.68 Miles 1:42:00 15:17 Central Park NYC (US)
Home for a few days over the holiday week. A long walk in Central Park was a nice way to recover from a couple of longer than usual runs in a row. Picture is from the east side of the park adjacent to Fifth Ave and the iconic Guggenheim Museum at 89th Street, not far from the long time headquarters of the New York Road Runners Club. Tomorrow night is Thanksgiving Eve I’ll do a favorite run through Central Park adjacent to the staging area for the Macy’s Parade where you can be near the big balloons being inflated for the next morning from a peaceful and empty vantage point in the park. Always magical.
11/19/18 4.00 Miles 39:49 9:58 Trumbull Center (US)
4 miles all running, back to back days. 5th time in 7 days. A good walk tomorrow will do the trick. Dreams do come true, if you want it enough.
11/18/18 8.04 Miles 1:29:00 11:05 Trumbull Center (US)
Slowly, very slowly, my strength is creeping back in. Ran & walked (40 x 175yds) alternating between running & walking for 4 miles (uphill) followed by a steady 4 mi jog back (downhill) at about 9:30 per mile. My 4th nonstop 4 mile run since Monday. Very muddy and slushy as the 6-8” of snow from Friday is melting quickly and leaving a sloppy mess. Happy to get off the pavement again so I’m not companing one bit.
11/16/18 4.01 Miles 42:30 10:36 Stratford (US)
Forced off the trail and onto paved roads for the first time in months by 6-8” of early snow last night. Bright sunshine but very windy and cold. Feels more like January. Hope it’s not an indication of things to come and the beginning of a long winter. Oh well. Grateful to get another nonstop, slow 4 mile run. Another 3-5 months and things are supposed to get much better if my Dr has it right. I hope so!
11/15/18 6.34 Miles 1:38:40 15:34 Trumbull (US)
Just made it. Freezing rain and sleet began just as I finished. Icing roads on the way home and now snowing at home as darkness sets in.
11/14/18 4.01 Miles 43:00 10:44 Trumbull (US)
Cold day. Chill factor in the 20s. Teens tonight and 3” of snow. Very early for this cold and for accumulating snow this far south. Ran a bit of fartlek on the uphill 2mi and a steady slow 2 miles back. All good. Bob. Almost finished answering your questions. Will send tonight or early tomorrow.
11/13/18 6.27 Miles 1:35:00 15:10 Trumbull Center (US)
Good walk in the woods for my rest day. Puddle jumping the whole way. Haven’t quite figured out how to get the layers right for powerwalking in the cold vs running. I definitely don’t generate quite the same heat.
11/12/18 4.25 Miles 46:14 10:53 Trumbull (US)
Drove 4hrs back from Maine. Straight to the hospital for a CT scan and from there straight to the trail for a run. Walked the first 1/4 mile as a warmup and then a slow 4 mile run. Learning to slow down a bit more than the tempo my body would prefer to one that is sustainable at this point. My 3rd 4mi run in this past week. A little faster than a week ago and my HR a little lower too. All good. Finished at 4:38 and the sun was already down, another 5 weeks of losing about a minute of daylight per day before the days start getting longer again. Some snow in the forecast for Thursday.

I was in Maine in Saturday to induct a dear friend into the Maine Running Hall of Fame. I had a few hours to kill and it occurred to me that the 2nd Saturday in November is the traditional date of the New England High School XC championships and 46 years ago (1972) it was on a golf course near Portland. Teams and individuals from the 5 New England states qualify for the NE meet by winning a state championship or running very fast as an individual. My HS team won the state title in Maine that year and we qualified to run in the NE championship. We ran and did well and were 5th overall. I hadn’t been back on that cross country course since. Nostalgia won and I went over and found a closed for the season golf course and went for a long walk around the course without any sign of another human. I remembered every turn, I could nearly smell the atomic balm liniment in the air still. It was special day in 1972 and arguably even more of one to be in the same spot 46 years later. Picture is of my team on that golf course in 1972 after the race. I’m 2nd from the left, sick as a dog from the intense race.
11/9/18 8.01 Miles 1:40:00 12:30 Trumbull (US)
4 miles brisk walk up the hill In an hour, slow run back down the hill in 40 minutes. Traveling over the weekend so my Sunday long day was today and without a rest day prior. 3 runs out of 4 days since Tuesday so tired legs today, a couple of days off will feel good. Eager to see how I bounce back on Mondsy.
11/8/18 4.48 Miles 45:58 10:16 Trumbull (US)
Run & walk intervals on the way up the hill and slow run for the last 2.5 on the way back. Police shooting range is on the other side of a big ridge from the trail and I must say that it was unsettling to hear the semiautomatic gunfire at the range in light of what happened in California last night. :-(
11/7/18 6.02 Miles 1:27:58 14:37 Trumbull (US)
Still figuring out what comprises an easy day vs a hard day as I am working to gain some fitness. It’s ever changing and a little elusive. Yesterday was my longest run in 10+ months so I’ll call that a hard day. Today was a good powerwalk for almost 90 minutes. I guess I’ll know tomorrow whether it was easy enough. Beautiful day in the woods. Leaves are coming down fast now and some old New England stone walls from the 18th century are peeking out again.
11/6/18 4.25 Miles 45:00 10:36 Trumbull (US)
A couple of days off to rest, heal a little and reset. Went out late today for a toe test, hoping to at least walk 3mi and maybe walk & jog a little. After walking the first 1/4 mile I decided to jog 1/4 mile and didn’t stop for 4 miles. First time running that far since last January and being hospitalized twice in Feb and again after surgery in June. Didn’t expect this today. I was the only person on the trail as it was raining & getting dark. Very happy. Couple of days of rest was a big help.
11/2/18 5.42 Miles 1:20:00 14:46 NYC (US)
New day. Walked most of the last 10k of Sunday’s marathon all the way to within 100yds of the finish line in Central Park. I was with a dear running friend of 40 years. When we met she was a Maine HS state champion and I was a member of the University of Maine track & cross country team and would vouch for her to give her access to the indoor track during the long cold winter. She’s now a mom with grown kids and an ER nurse and I’m retired from MoMA. Old friends are the best friends and running friends are a step above that, if there is one

This hat is a momento from Jenny Holzer’s contemporary art exhibit of the same name. It might be a good motto for those of us who’ve struggled with the balance between health issues and the simple joy of going for a run. Hand raised! A wonky knee, gimpy heel and reminders of heart surgery in June all conspired to make it bit of a tough day. A new day tomorrow. In the meantime, I’m wearing my hat. :-)
11/1/18 5.23 Miles 1:20:00 15:18 NYC (US)
Needed a recovery day, in NYC...so I walked through Central Park from the finish-line of Sunday’s marathon back to 21 miles and then took the subway home. At about 24.5 mile point I saw Des Linden out for a shakedown run, had a nice moment, was able to acknowledge her with a little bow and got a nice smile and tip of the sunglasses back from her. I was following the blue-line painted on the course to give the correct turns & tangents to the field. I flashed back to founding race director Fred Lebow coming up with this (in 1979 or 1980 maybe)when such a thing was unheard of. He found a paint company to donate it as a sponsor and as I recall they even named the color “marathon blue”. Marathon week is always a really magical time in NY and being out in the park to see the hubbub building through the week is special.

10/30/18 4.20 Miles 46:50 11:10 Trumbull (US)
Run 1/10th mi & walk 1/10th mi out & back recovery day. Beautiful morning. Photo of the sun pretty low in the sky for 12:30pm. Season is definitely changing. Clock changes this weekend and home to NYC to cheer on the marathoners. If you’re around or running, we will be near 35k, just listen for the cowbells!
10/29/18 5.57 Miles 1:03:50 11:28 Trumbull (US)
2.78mi powerwalk up the hill (@14 per mile) 2.78 slow run back down (@9:30 per). Rain & wind of the weekend knocked down a lot of the leaves but love the smell and the crunch under foot.
10/28/18 7.74 Miles 1:27:00 11:15 Trumbull Center (US)
Our first nor’easter of the season blew through yesterday. 2-3” of cold rain and 50-60mph winds. Lots of leaves down. Much better today other than lots of slippery wet leaves. Decided to try something a little different today. My “long” day with 1/10th of a mile under 9:00 pace followed by a 1/10th of a mile powerwalk and repeat for the entire distance so about 3.9mi of running and 3.9mi of power walking. Good workout. .
10/26/18 6.20 Miles 1:13:00 11:47 Trumbull Center (US)
Black & white are colors too and quite a contrast with the fireworks in the woods of southern New England now, must be about peak foliage. Walked & jogged. Not 100% but better day by day. Grateful and happy.
10/25/18 5.55 Miles 1:09:00 12:26 Trumbull Center (US)
A peaceful place in my brain (and our country). Getting my strength back after being sick. Powerwalked up the hill to halfway & slow jog/walk on the way back.
10/24/18 4.20 Miles 1:03:00 15:00 Trumbull Center (US)
Slowly feeling a little better. Still not 100% but a mile further today and a minute a mile faster. All by feel and watching my heart rate. Still slightly elevated at rest and for a given level of exercise. Glad the weather is still so glorious.
10/23/18 3.23 Miles 53:00 16:25 Trumbull Center (US)
First time with 3 days in a row off since surgery in June. Nasty virus over the weekend. Still not 100% but a relaxed 3 in the woods on a warm, beautiful fall day felt good.
10/19/18 6.09 Miles 1:14:00 12:10 Trumbull (US)
Had plans to try a 3miles continuous run for the 2nd half of today’s effort but the leg weariness I’ve felt building through the week made me reboot and go with plan b: 1/4 mi walk & 1/4 mi slow run for the 6mi. Day off tomorrow.
10/18/18 4.01 Miles 44:01 10:59 Trumbull Center (US)
A week since my first 2 mi run. 2.25mi today with alternating 1/4 mi walk & jog for the first 1-3/4. A total of 4 miles, 3-3/4 of it running. A real change in the weather. Tights, 3 shirts, gloves & hat. Beautiful sunny, breezy day.
10/17/18 6.10 Miles 1:34:00 15:25 Trumbull Center (US)
Rest day. Good brisk walk in the woods. Last week this was sufficient to give my legs some bounce the next day. Hoping for the same tomorrow. Cool, windy, gray, misting. Hat & gloves for the first time this year. Freeze warning tonight. Need to dig my fall/winter gear out.
10/16/18 4.02 Miles 43:00 10:42 Trumbull Center (US)
Wasn’t quite sure how I’d feel after yesterday, expected to be tired and as usual instincts are usually right. Walked & jogged the first 2miles up the hill (+200ft) It’s not a steep climb but just enough to tell you how the day will go. 2 miles back with very tired legs were much easier than they might have been thanks to the downhill. 5th continuous run of 2 miles or more in the last week. Definitely an easy one tomorrow, probably just a 6 mi walk.
10/15/18 5.77 Miles 59:00 10:14 Trumbull Center (US)
What a difference a day makes. Yesterday a bit of a train wreck. Planned on a day off but I had a few good meals, 8hrs sleep, hydrated well, put away my clunky Hoka shoes (for a day) and put on a lighter aspirational shoe and things were much better. First non stop 3 mile run in almost a year to finish, first miles into the 8s in a year. (8:34, 8:57, 8:54). Ahhhhhh.Yes!
10/14/18 8.14 Miles 1:55:00 14:08 Trumbull Center (US)
Did my 8 but it didn’t go as I’d hoped. After a breakthrough week with 3 days of continuous runs for a couple of miles each time I hoped for more today. Jogged 6x 1/2 mi on the way out, uphill, I ended up with a bit of an elevated heart rate that wouldn’t recover as it does normally. My Dr has instructed me not to push through so I didnt, just walked 4miles to finish up. I think maybe my body hadn’t really recovered from my breakthrough efforts of last week. Day off tomorrow. All good.
10/13/18 3.00 Miles 45:00 15:00 Trumbull Center (US)
I know challenge 2 is done and challenge 3 is yet to come but I’m going to keep logging miles and posting pictures, just because. An easy 3mi walk recovery day in anticipation of 8 tomorrow with more running than walking. A glorious cool fall day and forecast week ahead.
10/12/18 6.10 Miles 1:05:00 10:40 Trumbull Center (US)
11x 1/4 mile with a 1/10th of a mile walk between and 2.2mi continuous run to finish (9:24 & 9:16). Slowly it turns.
10/11/18 4.28 Miles 47:15 11:03 Trumbull Center (US)
Walk & slow run alternating for 1.85 mi then 2.43 steady slow run to finish. A little easier than my first 2miler the other day but a bit slower too and that’s probably wise. Super humid tropical air being pumped in here ahead of the remnants of Hurricane Michael. 3-5” rain in the forecast.
10/10/18 7.40 Miles 1:35:50 12:58 Trumbull Center (US)
Not much run in my legs after my little effort to run yesterday so a good power walk for the day will have to do. Warm muggy day near 80. Cooler by the weekend.
10/9/18 4.21 Miles 48:00 11:25 Trumbull Center (US)
2 mile walk and for the first time since late May, 2 miles of non stop slow running (@9:39/last in 9:19). I went into the hospital for heart surgery in early June and since then have walked and then walked and jogged almost 500 miles to build back some strength. 337 of the miles here. Thank you Bob and this team and community for providing the support and motivation. Today’s 2 felt about as hard as the last 2 of a marathon, in fact I’m not sure I’ve ever had a last 2mi at the end of a marathon quite as hard but I can tell you this, the satisfaction of seeing the end of the trail today was as satisfying as seeing the banner on Boylston in Boston or at Tavern on the Green in NY. Thank you all for going along on my journey.
10/8/18 6.22 Miles 1:07:00 10:47 Trumbull (US)
A couple of days of “rest” while traveling to a funeral. Back into the woods today. Slowly the strength comes back. 3 miles in the 9:30s on the way back down the hill including a 1/10th of a mile walk in each so must’ve been into the 8s for the running bits.
10/5/18 10.50 Miles 1:55:00 10:58 NY NY (US)
Lap & a half of Central Park 6.5 walk & jog, the balance a good walk
10/3/18 6.30 Miles 1:08:40 10:54 Trumbull Center (US)
8x 1/4 mi on the way up the hill and 5x 1/2 mi on the way back down. 1/10th mile walk recovery between each. Tired legs today. Easy tomorrow.
10/2/18 3.05 Miles 46:00 15:05 Stratford (US)
An easy 3 on what would normally be my day off. Traveling on the weekend so will try to squeeze some extra in around that to keep up the momentum. I can rest in the plane! (I hope)
10/1/18 5.35 Miles 59:00 11:02 Trumbull Center (US)
Monday is my customary day off but I have all day Dr appointments at the hospital tomorrow so... .25 mi walk warmup, 6x .75 mi slow jog with .10 mi walk recovery between each. Tired legs after my 8mi yesterday but happy to be able to get it done.
9/30/18 8.05 Miles 1:27:00 10:49 Trumbull Center (US)
6x1/2 mi with 1/10th mi recovery on the uphill. 3 & 3/4 mi with 1/10th mi recovery and the 1 1/4th mi to finish. Cool morning. Could see my breath for the first time.
9/29/18 4.97 Miles 1:15:00 15:06 Trumbull Center (US)
A good brisk walk in the woods on a glorious early fall day to wrap up 2 days of active rest. Tomorrow back to slow running with brief walk rests to accommodate Dr’s orders. I’ll try for 8mi. It’s supposed to be our first morning in the 40s.
9/28/18 3.00 Miles 45:00 15:00 Stratford (US)
An easy rest day. Another tomorrow and then let’s see if I can bounce back on Sunday for another 8 with more running and shorter recovery between each.
9/27/18 6.30 Miles 1:11:00 11:17 Trumbull Center (US)
1/4 mi walk to warm up and 1/2 mi slow run x 10 with 1/10th of mi walk in between. Tired legs today. An easy day or 2 so I can try another longer effort on Sunday.
9/26/18 4.16 Miles 45:00 10:50 Trumbull Center (US)
7+ inches of rain the day & night before washed out a good bit of my favorite trail in places for yesterday’s run. Had to pick my spots and tread carefully. Got it done. Headed back out later for a few miles. Flood warnings in effect for tonight and tomorrow again. Better forecast for the weekend.
9/25/18 6.19 Miles 1:06:00 10:40 Trumbull Center (US)
A good day. 50 degrees & heavy rain means the parking lot at the trail parking lot was empty. I was able to (slowly) run 2.5 of the 3+ miles on the uphill leg and 2.7 mi on the way back. After toweling off and putting on some dry gear, I stopped by a favorite coffee shop on the way home and while there was able to buy pre-sale tickets online for the Millrose Games for 3 friends, all running buddies for 40+ yrs (and fellow inductees into the Maine Running Hall of Fame). Eager to see them all on Feb 9. A good day indeed!
9/23/18 8.16 Miles 1:26:01 10:33 Trumbull Center (US)
1/4 mi walk warmup 10x 1/4 slow run with 1/10th of a mile walk recovery going uphill (+437ft in 4 miles) On the way back down the hill,. 4x 1/2 mi slow run with 1/10th of a mile walk recovery and 1.3 mi slow run to finish. 9:03 last mile. Cool mid 50s helped a lot. For a few minutes out there I remembered what it felt like to be a runner. Encouraging!
9/22/18 3.15 Miles 59:00 18:44 Trumbull Center (US)
An easy 3 in the woods ahead of a longer 8 tomorrow. Beautiful first day of proper New England autumn weather on the day of the equinox. 60s & breezy and no humidity. Grateful.
9/21/18 6.20 Miles 1:07:50 10:57 Trumbull Center (US)
1/4 mi walk to warmup. 8x1/4 mi jog with 1/10th of a mile walk between. After turn around, 3x1/2 mi jog with 1/10th of a mile walk between and finished with a slow mile jog (@9:44).
9/20/18 4.18 Miles 47:00 11:15 Trumbull Center (US)
Walk 1/4 mi warmup Jog 1/4 mi (walk til HR recovery) x 12 The view from the trail ain’t so bad!

An easy day
9/19/18 6.29 Miles 1:12:30 11:32 Trumbull Center CT (US)
Fall is trying to settle in and I’m pretty darned pleased about that. Midday walk & jog on the way out and then a jog and walk on the way back. Joy & peace with every step.
9/17/18 4.30 Miles 1:05:90 15:28 Trumbull CT (US)
9/16/18 8.92 Miles 1:41:00 11:20 Trumbull Center (US)
Up at 2:50am on the east coast of the US to watch the start of the Berlin Marathon. Watched an incredibly riveting and inspiring world’s best time unfold in the race. Watched til 6am and then I was into the woods just as the sun was coming up for my longest effort in about 14 months of hard work, unfortunately still with very limited abilities to run continuously in spite of a lot of rehabilitation, work and months of patience for slow (to no) gains. I’m seeing my Dr on Tuesday, in hopes he can to figure out what’s causing what they’re calling “exercise intolerance” in my case. Feels a little bit like trying to run with a backpack full of heavy stones with no means to shed them. We’ll see on Tuesday. Hopeful. Always hopeful!
9/15/18 3.25 Miles 50:00 15:24 Stratford CT (US)
An easy & short one in hopes of handling 8miles tomorrow. Autumn in New England slowly but surely settling in. A bit of color starting fo appear in the trees. My favorite season in my favorite place doing what I love to do. How do you beat that?.
9/14/18 5.68 Miles 1:14:50 13:11 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
In 50 years as a runner I thought I’d experienced about everything I could. I was about 3 miles into a pleasant enough powerwalk recovery day. I suddenly felt a sharp pain and burning sensation in my thrice operated on left Achilles’ tendon. On the inside, just above the top of my shoe. Naturally it was a big concern. I stopped, reached down, looked and saw a hornet imbedded in my thin ankle sock and had clearly stung me, through my sock, right on my Achilles’ tendon. I knocked it away, continued my walk and other than a slight tenderness, I guess no damage done. A new day tomorrow. I wonder what might happen next?
9/13/18 6.44 Miles 1:15:43 11:46 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Pleasantly cloudy and cool walk/jog on the trail. 1/4 mi walk-1/4 mi jog on the way up the hill to the turnaround and then jogged 2-1/2 of the 3-1/4 on the way back down. All good.
9/11/18 4.44 Miles 58:08 13:06 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Back on the trail for a rainy & cool one. The last 1.29mi at a continuous slow jog, maintaining 9:15 per mile. Furthest at that pace since before hospitalization & surgery in February.
9/11/18 2.24 Miles 32:00 14:18 NYC (US)
Rest day in NYC, a couple of easy miles in the ‘hood
9/9/18 7.71 Miles 1:39:45 12:57 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Longest day so far. Almost 50 degrees cooler than earlier in the week helped! Slow run for 3miles of the last 3.75.
9/8/18 4.12 Miles 1:03:00 15:18 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Thousands of miles along “my” trail over the years always gives me peace and leaves me with a desire to get back out the next day. The nature along the way is endlessly and often surprisingly inspirational. Today’s photo from the trail might be called. “Will=way”. The runner’s life!
9/7/18 6.12 Miles 1:24:50 13:52 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
30 degrees cooler 24hrs later. Felt good. My usual 6. 3mi power walk up the hill on the trail and intervals of jogging and walking on the way back. Always grateful. Every mile is a good mile.
9/6/18 2.37 Miles 32:00 13:31 Pequonnock River Rail Trail (US)
103 degree heat index, national weather service warning for unhealthy air quality and a severe thunderstorm warning combined with ongoing treatment from heart surgery and under pulmonologist’s care cut it short today. Cooler and healthier weather tomorrow.
9/5/18 4.40 Miles 1:08:00 15:28 Trumbull CT (US)
Long gone are the days of an easy recovery day consisting of a shorter slower morning run and more of the same in the evening or maybe just an easy 10. Today was a 4.4mi walk, a little over an hour, on tired legs. I think it’ll serve the same purpose and a bit more of building effort tomorrow. Grateful as always
9/4/18 6.12 Miles 1:25:40 14:00 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
3 miles brisk walking up the hill and 3 miles back down, walking and jogging intervals on the way back. The graphic of my heart rate shows it all. Another hot one. 90+ and very humid at dusk
9/2/18 7.60 Miles 1:40:00 13:10 Trumbull CT (US)
Power walked 3.8 & then jogged 1/2mi and walked 1/10th of a mile for 3.8mi on the way back. Furthest distance in a while but treading water and not adding more running to my miles until my Dr clears it.
9/1/18 6.06 Miles 1:20:00 13:13 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Perfect first day of September. Happy to be out in the woods.
8/31/18 6.14 Miles 1:18:58 12:52 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
The last day of August. It’s been a hot humid summer on the east coast. Just saw a report from the National Weather Service in Connecticut that said we’ve had 700 hours (29 days) with humidity in excess of a “tropical or oppressive” 70 degree dew point this summer to date and in all of the historical data there have never been 400 hours (16 days) in a summer before. Today was a little better but the forecast for next week looks like it will be sticky again. I took advantage of the reprieve today and walked a brisk 3 miles up the trail and jogged (5x 1/2 mile) and walked 3 miles back.
8/30/18 4.16 Miles 1:03:50 15:21 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Let’s do this. Still putting Humpty Dumpty together again but I’m game. Hot day. At the end of my effort, ran into a HS coach and his boys XC team talking about the workout. Almost 50 years to the day from my first formal XC team run.
8/9/18 5.51 Miles 1:05:00 11:48 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail CT (US)
The picture doesn’t begin to capture how swampy it was in the woods this morning. Seriously muggy. Jogged 2min & walked 2min on the way out on the uphill leg and jogged 1/2 mile and walked 2 min on the way back down after the turnabout. Nice to see the HS & college XC runners beginning to show up in small groups out on the trail. It’s hard not to flashback.
8/8/18 4.22 Miles 55:00 13:02 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
A good brisk walk in the woods. Gearing up for 6mi walking & jogging tomorrow and 7 on Saturday.
8/7/18 5.61 Miles 1:07:00 11:57 (US)
One foot in front of the other. Walk 2 min. Jog 2 min on the way up to the turnabout and jog 5 min walk 2 min on the way back down. Very warm & humid. Heat index of 90 before 8am. Thankfully in the shade of the woods.
8/5/18 4.32 Miles 1:07:00 15:31 Central Park NYC (US)
A brisk walk on a very hot & humid morning. Day off tomorrow and then back at it.
8/4/18 6.30 Miles 1:20:00 12:42 New York City (US)
The first 3 Saturdays of August NYC closes streets from 72nd St and Central Park down to the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s called Summer Streets and is a wonderful day to run, bike or walk the city streets traffic free. I managed 6.3 walking 2 min & jogging 2 min. Almost 80 & 90% humidity at 7am. The picture is afterwards, from a Starbucks waiting to meet my dear wife with a dry shirt and go for brunch with our daughter. (100% humidity in a downpour.)

A nice walk down the westside of Central Park to Columbus Circle. About 3 months from now 50,000 marathoners will be walking the opposite way to exit the park after finishing the NY Marathon.
8/2/18 4.15 Miles 00:49:25 11:55 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Jog 2 min & walk 2 min for a little over 4 miles. Hot & muggy, even in the woods. Sept is coming! My 50th as a runner.

7/31/18 5.75 Miles New York & Connecticut (US)
Some multitasking today. Took an early train from Connecticut to NYC for a followup with my Dr. I walked 1,75 to & from the train station in CT & 4 mi in NYC between Grand Central and my Dr’s office and back. All good.

Some walking. Some running. 3rd week in a row with a 6+ mile effort. Slowly but surely...

Rest day. Tomorrow further & over 100!
7/27/18 4.02 Miles 00:55:00 13:41 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
Really glad to be back in the woods for a walk & jog. No direct sun but 91 degrees & 80% humidity was reminiscent of running in Gainesville in the 80s, just way slower. :-)
7/26/18 5.20 Miles 01:05:00 12:30 Central Park NYC (US)
6 week anniversary of beginning the slow heal. Walked & jogged in Central Park. 3.25mi slow jogging, a little bit under 2mi walking. All subject to heart rate limits as per my Dr’s orders. Hills & warm temps add a whole ‘nother layer of tough at this stage of things. Headed back to the Connecticut woods tomorrow, eager to get on a soft & shaded surface. All good. Always grateful.
7/25/18 4.19 Miles 01:06:30 15:53 Central Park NYC (US)
Nice rainy brisk paced walk to Great Hill in the northern end of Central Park. A nice 1/5th(?) of a mile cinder track tucked away in the woods is a pleasant spot for a few laps. Photo tomorrow.

Back home in the big city and I semi confidentally ventured away from the safe & gentle trails in Connecticut where I’ve been rehabbing and into Central Park. Hot. More hills than I’ve attempted. Seriously humbling with hundreds of runners of all abilities whizzing by. My Dr said I could safely push myself to the edge of my comfort zone. I certainly did that. Easier tomorrow.

Rainy, humid. Walked briskly up the hill on the trail to about 5k, jogged 2.5m of it on the way back down the hill (with two 1/4 mi walk breaks along the way). Grateful to be healing quickly and doubly so to be gaining a little fitness .

Rest day walk in hopes of making it a little further tomorrow with some more running. Sometimes we see some wildlife on the trail.
7/20/18 5.27 Miles 01:06:00 12:32 Pequonnock River Valley Rail Trail (US)
1/2 mile walk to warmup a little and then repeats of jogging for1/8th of a mile and walking for an 1/8th of a mile for the remaining 4 3/4miles. Progress is good!

Whether 13 or 63 (and I trust 73, 83 & 93), there are a lot of things that change (significantly) but thankfully a few constants too. There is always joy to be found on a trail through the woods. Nothing better. The hard & easy principles of training are always part of it; as a youth learning how to run, at the peak of your physical abilities, rehabilitating from ailments or simply slowing with age. An hour is an hour. Doesn’t matter if you’re walking 4 miles or running a training run of 8, 9 or 10 miles (sorry, can’t speak of what happens beyond that pace for a training run). So today, I went for a lovely, hour long 4 mile walk in the woods . It was an easy day for me following a harder effort yesterday, consisting of 5 miles of some walking & slow running as I rehabilitate from an (8th!) orthopedic “repair” and a (2nd) cardiac “procedure” this year. Tomorrow I’ll do 5 with a little more slow running. Got my eye on trying for 6 on Sunday morning. It’s all good.

Big rains last night led to nice, way less humid, fresh cooler day. Power walking interspersed with jogging including my first non stop slow mile jog since before surgery. Progress is good.
7/17/18 4.00 Miles 00:54:13 13:34 Pequonnock River Valley Trail CT (US)
Building back strength, slowly but surely. Walking & jogging: miles to go to run properly but all good! Surgery was 5 weeks ago tomorrow.

Super muggy but the furthest I’ve gone in a while. My cardiogist gave me a go ahead to try a little jogging during my walk . In the 2nd half alternated jogging and walking 1/4 mile. I’ll take it.

Beautiful day.

It’ was beautiful today on the pequonnock river valley rail trail, cool & sunny after a miserable stretch of weather. My motto after 50 years, “Every mile is a good mile”. Counting the days til my Dr gives me clearance to run them instead of walking, 68 days to go!
