A beautiful morning bright sun and 44f. Summer is coming I know I could feel the warmth and hear the birds in the the woods. Trails are magic. Tired legs get a second life and a hard run turns into an enjoyable escape. 30 minutes turned into 39 and I felt much better for it. Looking forward to more trail runs. Have a great weekend my friends.
3/29/19 3.10 Miles 30:12 9:45 Mattapoisett (US)
Took the opportunity to run the trails again. Rain is in the forecast for the weekend so the trails will be muddy next week. It’s alway good to get off the roads and enjoy the sound of nature. Especially when your legs are tired. Enjoy the weekend everyone.
3/28/19 4.20 Miles 39:35 9:26 Mattapoisett center. (US)
Thursday night group run. I’m still a long way away from intervals. Still it was nice to be out and to finish with a few beers at the Mattapoisett Inn. It’s still cold and we are all longing for some warmer days.
3/27/19 3.80 Miles 35 minutes 9:13 Mattapoisett ma (US)
A cool evening run. Ran Out to brandt island feeling good. Spring turned to winter today. Yet it was a pretty sunset. I will be ready to run in the morning
3/26/19 6.30 Miles 60 minutes 9:32 Mattapoisett. Ma. (US)
A cold sunny morning and I ventured into the trails. Hasn’t rained for a few days. First time this year. I know it’s so peaceful and an ideal escape for tired legs and tired mind. I was planning on my usual 30 minutes however once I was on the trial my plans started to change. First opportunity I extended the run to 40 minutes then on the beach I couldn’t stop myself as I continued on the beach and passed the turn. So I was on for the 60 minutes loop. I was feeling very relaxed and all the anxiety and tiredness was lifted. It would have been easy to stay in the woods. My best run this year. Not my fastest but most relaxing. Enjoy my friends.
3/25/19 3.20 Miles 27:10 8:30 Mattapoisett Ma. (US)
A morning to remember. Perfect weather 43f no wind and high clouds. It was one of those runs. I felt a little tired but was moving easy and relaxed. I always love the run out to the island smelling the salt air. I know I had a little spring in my stride and was pleased when I finished and looked at the clock. I was definitely moving a little faster than usual. I’m smiling and ready for the day.
3/24/19 4.00 Miles 38:20 9:35 Providence RI (US)
A change of location. A nice easy run along the Providence River enjoying the cool morning sun. It was a perfect day to run.
3/22/19 2.20 Miles 20:15 9:13 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Pouring rain this morning and for most of the day. I had lunch with my daughter and I over did it. The good thing the rain stopped and I got a nice easy run in at 5 pm. Ran out to Brandt Island and enjoy the 18 mph winds off the water. I’m still nursing an injury so my 20 minutes was enough to keep me going. Enjoy the weekend everyone.
3/21/19 4.30 Miles 39 minutes 9:05 Mattapoisett (US)
It’s spring and we are back at the town wharf. Still a little cool. Group run on the quiet town roads. 4.3 miles nice and easy. 39 minutes and I felt good and I enjoyed the Mattapoisett Inn. Summer is coming.
3/20/19 3.10 Miles 32 10:20 Mattapoisett Ma (US)
It’s the first day of spring and I decided on a change of location for my Run this morning. I went to the town wharf and was treated to a beautiful sunrise over the harbor. I ran a nice easy run with a friend taking in a few hills. Still cold with the temp a cool 25f . I’m ready for some warmer temps. Enjoy the day.
3/19/19 3.10 Miles 28:30 9:12 Mattapoisett ma (US)
An afternoon run on the waters edge. Still feeling the run from Sunday. It is just a matter of time and I’ll be back to normal.
3/18/19 2.00 Miles 20 minutes 10:00 Mattapoisett (US)
A nice easy run in the early spring sunshine. Definitely a recovery day. My legs are a little tired but nothing a few easy days won’t cure. Ran to Brandt Island on the causeway. There is no better way to recover from a long run. I’m looking forward to my next run.
3/17/19 7.50 Miles 64:40 8:38 New Bedford ma (US)
I decided to give the New Bedford half marathon a shot. I know the course well and there are a few escape routes to cut it short. I had been nursing a problem in my right leg so i was out for an easy run. It was fun and I felt like I was running comfortably with no pain. However I new I was slowing down at 7 miles and that 13.1 miles was probably not a smart thing. I was happy with my run and choose the last escape route. I walked and ran the couple of miles to the finish. Always better to live to run another day. My picture is a few years old.
3/16/19 3.20 Miles 28:20 8:52 Mattapoisett Ma (US)
What a difference a day makes. Today the sun was out and there was definitely some sunshine in my run. 28 minutes was so much easier than the 20 minutes yesterday. Roll on summer sun. Enjoy your St Patrick’s weekend everyone.
3/15/19 2.00 Miles 20 minutes 10:00 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Not a great morning. I woke with my other hip not feeling right. I had a hard time walking down the stairs. It did ease off and I did get myself out for an easy slow run. A beautiful morning on the waters edge. Hip seems ok. I will take it easy tomorrow and see how it is Sunday morning before the half marathon.
3/14/19 1.50 Miles 15 minutes 10:00 Mattapoisett ma. (US)
I ran with my Thursday night group. First run since September. I wanted to reconnect with them. I did the warm up 15 minutes running around the high school. It was nice to see everyone before we adjourned To the local inn for some light refreshments.
3/14/19 3.30 Miles 29:10 8:51 Mattapoisett Ma (US)
Back to my normal run from home. I did an extra tenth of a mile. 36f was a little cool so hoody and wind jacket came in handy. A beautiful run out to Brandt Island with no wind. I am enjoying this time alone and running within myself. See how I am for the New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday.
3/13/19 3.50 Miles 32 9:09 Exeter RI (US)
A nice run with an old college friend. 40 years of running friendship. Nothing better than running and talking. It also makes it a lot easier. Have a good day everyone.
3/12/19 3.50 Miles 30:45 8:48 Mattapoisett Ma (US)

3/11/19 3.20 Miles 27:20 8:33 Mattapoisett Ma (US)
An incredible run on the waters edge: the first sign of spring. After the bitter cold 43f felt wonderful. I could feel that spring time spring in my stride. Roll on summer sun. Strange how the weather plays such a big part in running. Same route Friday in the fridge cold dressed for the cold. Was replaced with a nice easy 27 minutes with the same effort felt. Lesson don’t place to much emphasis on time Just enjoy the run. It will come together.
3/10/19 6.30 Miles 62 minutes. Mattapoisett Ma (US)
Snow rain and hail. An early run before the forecasted rain set in. Hail and snow. It was nice 35f made for a good run. 62 minutes was comfortable. Ran about a mile on the snow I should be ready and able to run half on Sunday. Have a good week everyone.
3/9/19 6.30 Miles 64 minutes 10:10 Mattapoisett (US)
A beautiful morning in Mattapoisett. 36f. I can feel spring in the air. It’s so easy to run when the air is clear and the sun is shining. 16f yesterday made today feel almost tropical. I was a little overdressed. 64 minutes felt good. Enjoy the weekend
3/8/19 3.20 Miles 30 minutes 9:23 Mattapoisett (US)
Second run on home ground. It was a beautiful bright morning but 16f left it a bit cold. Dressed with multiple layers I was warm. This is the perfect route for me. Out and back past my road so I have an escape route. A great thing when you are a little hurt. 30 minutes is my optimum time and it is enough for my to jump into the odd half. New Bedford March 17 if you are looking for a great race.
3/7/19 3.20 Miles 32:00 10:00 Mattapoisett (US)

At from the Mattapoisett town wharf. A beautiful sunrise morning but cold 26f. No wind made it feel warmer. Ran with a friend. Walked the first 5 minutes as I usually do to warm up. Then ran out to the lighthouse and on quiet country roads. Lots of people out walking. We picked up the distance today and it felt good. Adductor is slowly getting stronger. Just going to take my time.

11/30/18 2.00 Miles 18:15 9:08 Mattapoisett Brandt Island Road (US)
Today it was a run from home. I did my usual walk before I started my run. It was a cold morning and I was focused on running easy and keeping my time out low. I was happy with the run and keeping my speed down is vital. Looking forward to a group run in the morning. Go Team.

A perfect run. Yes... slow but it felt easy. Now it’s see what tomorrow brings. I’m hopeful. Keep on running. Ground a little wet so trails are not an option for a while

11/23/18 1.20 Miles 11:29 9:35 Mattapoisett Brandt Island Road (US)
Another cold morning. 12f at sunrise. 20f when I finally got myself out. This is what I dislike about winter. My new hips certainly feel the cold and let me know. Anyway it was 4 degrees warmer than yesterday and felt 20 degrees colder. I can say I have never felt this cold before and I have been out there on some bitter days. My toes and fingers froze and It was hard breathing the cold air. At 6 minutes I was done I just wanted to get back home so I made for home. Happy I’m done and my body is warming up. The bitter cold should be over tomorrow. Go Team.
11/22/18 1.60 Miles 15 minutes 9:23 Fairhaven Ma (US)
Went to the turkey trot with a thought of running. 16f was cold and it was colder at sunrise lol. Well I still have a guardian angel watching over me. I got the race time wrong. It was 8 am not 10 am. I got there at 8:30. To see the end of the run. I was way early for the 10 am start 😂. It was a good thing. I’m not ready or recovered yet. I enjoyed a nice slow easy 15 minutes and was enjoying the log fire and good company at Rasputin’s at 9 am. The local drinking establishment. Happy Thanksgiving.
11/21/18 1.20 Miles 12:15 10:13 Mattapoisett ma (US)

11/15/18 3.50 Miles 39:20 11:15 Mattapoisett trails (US)
Morning run on the trails. Continuing with walk run. I had to take my guests through the trails and along the beach. And like yesterday I think I ran much more than I walked. Legs are holding up but I know I need to back off a little and slow down. I want to be running a comfortable 30 minutes buy December 14. I will be home in Liverpool

11/12/18 1.50 Miles 15 minutes 10:00 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Today was special I was feeling good my leg felt good. Is this the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope so. I could feel a little spring in my stride 😂 a slow one. It was just nice not to feel the faint ache in my adductor. I know I’m not out of the woods yet but almost. I definitely could have ran more but now is not the time. I will maintain my slow easy recovery. Go Team.
11/11/18 1.20 Miles 12 minutes 10:00 Mattapoisett ma (US)
It was time to rest so I got myself out on a perfect fall afternoon for a short run. Blue sky’s and 50f. It doesn’t get much better. Leg slowly coming around. I still feel something but PT tells me it good and I need to run and strengthen the adductor. That’s good with me. Go Team.

My first run on the cause way in about 2 months I missed the sea breeze and the sound of the water. It’s so peaceful. Ran the loop without walking. Now it’s wait and see what tomorrow brings. Stay positive.

11/8/18 5.00 K 36 11:36 Mattapoisett town wharf (US)
Today’s run materialized from my Facebook post. I mentioned how happy I was and how good it feels to be actually out running and that I would be running a sunrise run today. Well two people picked up on it and asked if they could join me. A brilliant walk run and talk session. Leg is holding up well. Just have to make sure I keep my pace under control. Go Team.
11/7/18 5.00 K 36 minutes. Mattapoisett town wharf (US)

11/6/18 1.00 Miles 12 minutes. Mattapoisett ma. (US)
Secon day in a row. I decided to repeat what I did yesterday. The adductor seems to be holding out. Now it’s about time and waiting to see how it is in the morning. So far so good. Very happy.
11/5/18 1.00 Miles 12 minutes 12:00 Mattapoisett ma. (US)
I had a good time in New York with a lot of walking. My leg didn’t feel great so I ended up resting Saturday and Sunday. Monday morning I decided to get out and enjoy the morning. Wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I have been walking running feeling good. But once I got past my walk warm up and started running I decided to run about a mile with no walking. My leg past the test it felt good at the end. I then walked the 400 yards home with a smile.
11/2/18 3.00 Miles 36 minutrdc 12:00 New York. Central Park (US)
Hi everyone. Sorry I have not posted. Well since we finished our last challenge I’ve not ran the strained Adductor had persisted. The stretching and the occasional get out and see how it feels. A lot of false starts. Anyway it’s been 2 months and I’m making another attempt to get back running. Friday in Central Park with Steve Jones was fun slow and very easy with a lot of walks. It felt good I put it down to the feel good effect of the marathon and running with Steve.
10/12/18 2.00 Miles 34:18 17:09 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Continuing with the walking. The adductor is definitely getting stronger but at this point time to recover is more important. Enjoyed a wonderful early evening walk and i was a little slower than yesterday. The most important thing was i was moving. Ready for tomorrow. Go Team.
10/11/18 2.00 Miles 31:10 15:35 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Took today as a rest and mental health day. Walked and made an effort to run but the adductor felt tender. So I enjoyed my time out and will be out smiling Tomorrow. Go Team
10/10/18 2.75 Miles 30:10 10:59 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Still working on recovery. PT visit today and he said it is a lot looser and easier than it was and I can continue to run as long as I take my time. Today I walked 5 minutes then 7 times 2 minutes running with 1 minute walk And ended with 5 minutes. It was a nice run in the woods. The slow build up will continue. Go Team
10/9/18 3.50 Miles 44:40 12:46 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Recovery continues walk run. 10 times 90 seconds running and one minute walk recovery. Trying to recover from a pull or a strain is so much harder than recovering from a layoff due to a cold. My legs don’t feel the same. The runs felt better with each one. So now it’s wait and see how they are tomorrow. It did feel good running the trails. Nobody can see me. 😎
10/8/18 3.00 Miles 44:20 14:47 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Finally I have good news. My run felt good. Walked 10 minutes then did 12 time 1 minute with 1 minute walk. Finished with 10 minutes walk and was greeted by my grandkids who wanted to run and play tag. The adductor survived and I’m excited about tomorrow. Baby steps I won’t be rushing this recovery. Time is on my side. Stretching and bike will continue.
10/7/18 4.00 Miles 66:55 16:44 Mattapoisett ma (US)
A fantastic walk on the trails. I managed to fight off the desire to run and test my adductor. It does feel good. I settled for a strong walk. I’ll be ready to test it in the morning. Fingers crossed It all goes well.
10/6/18 2.00 Miles 34:50 17:25 Sachuest Point Newport RI (US)

10/5/18 3.50 Miles 61:20 17:32 Mattapoisett ma. (US)
Sometimes we get lost, we loose site of our goals. Especially in running, the need to run clouds the mind. No matter what the goal is there is a driving force that’s pushing us to do more. The schedule takes over and it has to be completed no matter what. It could be running in a blizzard, running through bronchitis, or running through an injury. (Guilty on all counts ). I got caught up in my everyday running and I had to run no matter what. I now have an adductor strain and I’ve been trying to run through it. Yes it is getting better and the ache has definitely eased off but it’s still not 100%. The recovery is going very well and I want to be running again as soon as possible. However I’m my own worst enemy. I keep trying to run. I say to myself it’s much better and it is but it’s still not right. The light has gone on. Listen!!! The fastest way to recover is rest don’t fool yourself and keep testing it. Run when it’s 100%. Today I walked on the trails and along the beach for 62 minutes and I did generate a little sweat. Everyday of rest is a day closer to me running again. When will that be? I don’t know but it will be soon. Go Team
10/4/18 3.00 Miles 50:20 16:47 Mattapoisett ma (US)
A good day stretching went well. Walked for 50 minutes enjoying the morning air and the sun when it managed to peak through the clouds. Considered running and decided against it. Thought about how I felt trying to run yesterday and rest is the best course of action. I’m not going to loose much and the sooner I’m 100% the better. I’ll maintain fitness walking stretching and using the stationary bike.
10/3/18 2.50 Miles 45:30 18:12 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Today I was looking to rest and still get out. A nice walk on a damp cool fall morning. I was going to run walk but I felt the walk would be a more beneficial this morning. I just have to pull back the urge to run. Rest and recover fully. Stretching the adductors continues. Go Team
10/2/18 2.00 Miles 21:30 10:45 East Bay Bike path. East Providence. RI (US)
Leg is coming around. I was locating the mile marks for Narragansett Bay Half Marathon the 9 mile and 10 mile Marks. I was going to walk only once on the bike path I automatically started to run. The adductor felt good and the pain was minimal. Very happy will back off and return to walk run tomorrow. I also managed 30 minutes on the stationary bike. Looking forward to being 100% again. Go Team
10/1/18 3.60 Miles 42:40 11:52 Mattapoisett ma (US)
Day 3 of recovery. Same as yesterday. Only walked ran out to Brandt island on the causeway. A nice dirt gravel road. Sun on my back felt good. It’s just nice being out and enjoying the sea air. A good session and i can see the light at the end of the tunnel. But I’ll continue walking to it. Go Team n

So running is full of highs and lows, victories and defeats. On Thursday I felt confident that I was on the road to recovery. I had not run for several days and the pain in my thigh had certainly eased off. The stress and worry about my hip was still a constant. The weather had given me a wonderful afternoon to enjoy the pleasures of life. 😊 I took the opportunity it was sunny and 70. I walked about 400 yards before attempting to run. My plan: I new where the location I had been feeling the pain and I didn’t want to aggravate my hip groin area anymore. So my mind was in charge if I felt anything i would stop. I started my run and was immediately greeted by the dull pain. I ended the run at about 5 strides and continued to walk. This was not the outcome I was expecting but I was philosophical about this. Yes I stopped but I didn’t aggravate it any further. The walk helped reinforce my belief that I’m almost better and my injury is muscular and not my hip. But I still was worried. I needed something more than my instinct to put my mind at ease. I made a call to a good friend and the best PT around. He looked at my leg and he thinks the hip is good but the adductor is extremely tight and i had strained it. I need to strengthen and massage the adductor. Back to the drawing board. I have been here many times over the years and I have spent many hours massaging my legs and stretching. I always remember what Eddie Soens my old coach would say. Massage and keep the muscles supple especially the hamstrings and calves I had forgotten or just ignored his sound advice. Analysis of how and why. How!!! most probably introducing my interval sessions. Why!!! Running faster and stretching out all the muscles. I don’t think speed was the problem. I think it was complacency and not sufficiently warming up and maybe pushing myself to hard. I will be taking my time lots of slow easy runs with a major emphasis on having supple well stretched legs. Go Team. I am going to ease myself back slowly.
9/21/18 1.50 Miles 14:05 9:24 Brandt Island Road. Mattapoisett (US)
Another slow short run. Thigh groin area is still tender but definitely gets easier as I run. A beautiful morning and a perfect day to be on the run. I just have to persist and take my time. 14 or 15 minutes out is better than zero minutes. Go Team.
9/20/18 2.00 Miles 18 minutes. Mattapoisett town center. (US)
Thursday intervals only I settled for the warm up and jogging to watch and time the session. Frustrating. But the evening at the Inn made up for the disappointment. My leg was feeling good walking but the same pain persists running I will continue slow easy short runs for the time being. Go Team

Still feeling the hurt but it was good to be out early 7 am. 65f and damp was nice. Running slow and nursing the leg. Feels like there is a little improvement. I took no ibuprofen today. I will just have to let nature take its time . Definitely will not be rushing it. Go Team.

Struggling from the intervals last night. Left thigh not feeling good. I cut about 1/2 mile off my normal morning run. Will have to be smart and manage this pain.
9/15/18 2.50 Miles 27 minutes 10:48 Croxteth Hall Park. Liverpool (GB)
Not a great run. I had to walk home The strain and hurt to my left thigh has got to the point that I have to listen to it. The good news is it doesn’t bother me going up and down the stairs. I don’t think it is a hip joint problem. Will be backing off and praying it is ok. Today my daughter was visiting from London and I got to run with her for a while.

A very slow run through the park but the rain held off. Not a bad morning. Dry on the outside and soaked on the inside. Time running was longer than yesterday for the same run. Oh the sun came out as I finished. Still another run complete and I enjoyed the county setting. The cows didn’t mind the rain., Go Team.

John and Jessie Kelley Half Marathon. An early start 6::55 on the road. A good drive 1 hour 45 minutes. Arrived to clouds and humidity with plenty of time to get my number. The skies slowly began to darken. I started at the back and used the first 2 miles as my warm up running with Amby Burfoot. It was like my usual runs slowly let the running develop and enjoy the feeling. As I left Amby the heveans opend and the rain began to fall. A real monsoon. I have to say it was a great day to run. After the heat and humidity it felt good. Legs are feeling good right now. See how they are tomorrow.

This mornings run was a little later than normal. I was still coming down from the clouds. My legs new that they had pushed the limits last night and I was still feeling the excitement of a great session. But all great sessions need an easy run to bring everything back to normal. 76f overcast cool sea breeze felt good only the 100% humidity sucked the life right out. 45 slow sweaty easy minutes and I’m feeling good. Ready for the John Kelley Half in New London tomorrow morning and running with Amby Burfoot.

A great day. One of those days when you don’t want to stop. Was planning on 60 minutes but it was cool and I was enjoying the run so much that I ran an extra loop along the water. I know this is a time when I need to be in control. Injuries only happen when everything is going well. I need to control the running not the running controlling me. Well it was a good day and I’ll control tomorrow’s run. Interval Thursday. Log the miles everyone. Well done.
7/31/18 8.00 Miles 70 minutes 8:45 Mattapoisett Ma. Mattapoisett Neck Road (US)
7:45 am Run. Tried to run early this morning. It didn’t happen. Try again tomorrow. I did change my route and included a couple of hills. Still enjoyed water views and lots of shade. It was nice venturing away from my normal run. Just have to except that there are no escape routes to shorten the run. That’s ok my ribs are getting better and 70 minutes did feel good. I’m ready for tomorrow.

This was a tough run. Late night with wedding and lots of dancing oh and adult beverages very little sleep. Like old time. Saturday night out. Met Shawn Whalen and his lovely wife Mona at my house for an easy run together at 8:30. It was nice having company, the miles and time flew by. High tide ruled out running on the beach and through the trails. Mona did a fantastic job running with us to about 2 minutes. Thanks to Shawn for dragging me through what could have been a long run. I’ll be rested and ready for tomorrow.
7/28/18 6.00 Miles 55 minutes 9:10 Mattapoisett town wharf start and finish (US)

Thursday night intervals. It was nice to have a couple of new faces tonight. Chris Adams and Jonathan Barboza With Joanne Berdos Jack Nothing like pushing the pace. It was cool at the wharf with a beautiful sea breeze. Once we started running we new it was going to be a tough night to run. I was soaked with sweat before we finished the warmup. Any way we all got it done and kicked ass. The need for speed is contagious. I think our Thursday group is growing. What did we do? Nothing outrageous. 3 x 200’s 42’s 3 x 400’s 1:30’s 800 at 3:03 800at 3:07 Breathing ok. 7 miles total. 65 minutes. We all had fun and enjoyed a couple of beers at the inn

Average mile times around 9 minutes. The good thing is I can run and hopefully I’ll be 100% soon. I missed pushing myself hard last night.

A cool 72f and overcast. I was to run easy and I mean slow. So it was the trails and the water front. Low tide so I could run on the sand and cross a stream. Love this run with its sea breeze. I was moving pretty good and enjoying myself and not paying attention to the rocks and roots on the trail. Major fall knocked the wind out of me. It took a few minutes to pick myself up and get going again. Walk till my breath was back then I was back running and feeling good no broken bones just a bruised ego. Ready to go tomorrow.
7/16/18 6.50 Miles 1 hour 3 minutes Mattapoisett Ma. Brandt Island Road (US)

After yesterday I needed a nice easy recovery run and it had to be slow. I decided to run on the trails as it guarantees you run slower. I was thinking 45 easy minutes but once on the trails nature takes over and you feel the need to run. I love the woods. Just major tick inspection after run. 63 minutes was fantastic. Ready to go tomorrow

Then ran the 5k at 9:30 Ran with a friend for two miles then I picked up the pace for the last mile. A hot day on the boardwalk but a nice ocean breeze to cool you down. Social time after with a breakfast brunch provided at the Awards in the Community House Bar. Then I had to make the long drive home to Mattapoisett. A long but enjoyable day spent with friends doing what I like to do. I’ll be ready for tomorrow’s run. Does anyone recognize the young lady in the photo. She is pretty good.

It was a hot humid morning and I was feeling the effects of yesterday’s race. I usually run on a dirt causeway out to an island and back as part of my run. Today I stayed on the causeway and ran 4 loops up and down to feel the cool sea breezes. Just like old times only a little slower. A good run. Ready for tomorrow.
