TCS New York City Marathon

Sunday November 2nd, 2025
New York, New York
Distance: Marathon
Offical Race Web Site

The first New York City Marathon, organized in 1970 by Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta, was held entirely in Central Park. Of 127 entrants, only 55 men finished; the sole female entrant dropped out due to illness. Winners were given inexpensive wristwatches and recycled baseball and bowling trophies. The entry fee was $1 and the total event budget was $1,000.

In 1976, Lebow and 2,090 entrants took the New York City Marathon to the streets of the five boroughs in a moving celebration of sport and diversity. The course included five bridges, and winners Bill Rodgers and Miki Gorman shattered the event records.

Two years later, at the 1978 New York City Marathon, Grete Waitz of Norway, a track Olympian who’d never run farther than 12 miles, won the race in a world-record 2:32:30. Rodgers overcame 75-degree temperatures to become the race’s first three-time winner, and he added a fourth the next year, when Waitz broke her own world record.

The 2013 New York City Marathon returned the event to its place as New York City’s best day. A record 50,000+ runners finished the race, the most in any marathon ever. The 2014 TCS New York City Marathon again had a record number of finishers: 50,530.

Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund have partnered with the B.A.A. in the Half Marathon for 13 years as the race’s presenting sponsor. Through this relationship, team members have collectively raised more than $5 million to support groundbreaking cancer research, and enabled Dana-Farber scientists and clinicians to positively impact the lives of cancer patients around the world.

Dana-Farber runners often participate in honor or memory of a family member, friend, or colleague who has been touched by cancer. There are also many inspiring teammates who have been diagnosed themselves, and choose to run as a way to take physical action in the fight against cancer. Dana-Farber patients and their families also take part to provide incredible inspiration, and motivate runners to race toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.

In Philadelphia, we redefine the experience of what a marathon should be. A beautiful, fast and scenic course, an engaging atmosphere—it’s no wonder we're consistently listed among the top ten marathons in the country, recognized for our flat terrain, mellow weather and spirited fans.

Expect beautiful views through Fairmount Park and along the Schuylkill River and neighborhood residents cheering in University City and Manayunk. Weave through the well-traveled streets of our historic district, passing sights familiar to Franklin, Washington and the rest of the gang, and end your race speeding towards the steps of the majestic Art Museum.

Digital splits are provided at the 5K, 10K, 13.1 mile and 30K marks along the course, and fluid stations and spectator overlooks are set up throughout the course.

The Philadelphia Marathon Weekend Events are USATF sanctioned and course-certified.

Applied Materials Turkey Trot

On Thanksgiving morning, 2004, Carl and Leslee Guardino heard a radio report announcing “20,000 people downtown running and walking to benefit the needy” in Sacramento. Carl turned to Leslee and said, “Somebody ought to do a race like that here.” Leslee gave Carl that look that said, “Maybe that somebody should be us.”

Reaching out to Bob Brownstein at Working Partnerships, a think-tank arm of the Central Labor Council, a partnership was formed. Several months later, a major milestone occurred when Joe Pon of Applied Materials successfully championed to the company the idea of Applied serving as the Multi-Year Title Sponsor. With a title sponsor, and then several branded co-sponsors, the Applied Materials “Silicon Valley Turkey Trot “was born.

Three great local charities serving local residents – Healthier Kids Foundation Santa Clara County, Housing Trust Silicon Valley and Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties –were initially selected as multi-year beneficiaries, and a volunteer Executive Steering Committee started planning the first race, set for Thanksgiving Day, 2005.

  • Year One Goals: 1,000 participants, supported by 200 volunteers, with a stretch goal to raise $100,000 for charity.
  • Year One Results: 1,900 participants supported by 250 volunteers, clearing $132,000 for the three charities.

Valencia, Spain
Distance: Marathon · 10K
Offical Race Web Site

The Trinidad Alfonso EDP Valencia Marathon is held annually in the historic city of Valencia which, with its entirely flat circuit and perfect November temperature, averaging between 12-17 degrees, represents the ideal setting for hosting such a long-distance sporting challenge. This, coupled with the most incomparable of settings, makes the Valencia Marathon, Valencia, one of the most important events in the national calendar.

In the 2015 edition, the race beat all time records with the best on Spanish soil in history, obtained by the athlete John Nzau Mwangangi with a 2:06:13 crono. In addition, as every year the race surpassed the registered participants in the test with a figure that rose above the 17,000 participants.

The Trinidad Alfonso EDP Valencia Marathon was awarded IAAF Road Race Gold Label in 2016, which proves that it is one of the best 42,195 meter races in the world. More than 19,000 runners gathered together at the start line of the marathon. The winners were Victor Kipchirchir in the male category with a time of 2:07:38 and Valary Jemeli Aiyabei, who did the best time in the history of Spain and crossed the finish line in 2:24:49 improving the time she had done in Barcelona in the same year.

Had not run a full marathon in over 40 years but I had a good training base having prepared for the race over 3 months. I was very conservative in my approach and negative split the race finishing in 2:42, by far my best time.

Running alongside the Mediterranean coastline, a few meters from the sea, taking place in areas of the city where events such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the America`s Cup werehosted are only a few of the attractions awaiting the participants when they takepart in the Valencia Marathon.

The stunning Ciudad de la Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences) will serve as the nerve centre of this prestigious event that promises to be a sporting celebration. This architectural masterpiece will not only be both the starting and finishing points of the race but also, it willbe the site of the numerous parallel activities planned for the big day. Exceed your expectations as you pass over the shimmering blue pools of the Museo de las Ciencias (Science Museum) Príncipe Felipe and celebrate your triumphant return in this unforgettable set

The ValenciaMarathon was first run in 1981, is both a joyous event and one of the highpoints in the Spanish athletics calendar.

Three decades ago, the word Marathon hardly even figured in the Valencian’s vocabulary. Today, thanks to the efforts of various Valencian institutions together with SD Correcaminos (The Roadrunners, sporting association), these 42 kilometres have been adopted as a popular celebration of athletics where professionals and amateurs test to the limit their stamina and powers of personal endurance and perseverance.

What started out at the dawning of the 80’s as little more than a trickle of athletes dodging the local traffic, has now become a grand sporting happening. The Marathon has evolved into the leading event in the world of popular athletics and now forms an integral part in the Valencian social and sporting life.

For these reasons the Valencia Marathon has ceased being merely a challenging athletics meeting to being an all inclusive citizens’ celebration, taking in music and art too, and all this united in support of a group determined runners’ dreams of crossing that hallowed finishing line.

The Marathon sees the ringing in of some important new changes as part of our continuing commitment to furtherdeveloping the race. The event date has been moved to November (to take advantage of the more favourable climatic conditions) and both the starting and finishing lines have been relocated to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias to ensure that the Valencia Marathon will be one of the most memorable appointmentsfor the participating athletes.
