Prefontaine Classic

World Athletics made official Thursday what long has been suspected, with international track & field’s governing body announcing the Prefontaine Classic has been postponed. No new date has been set.

The Pre Classic, part of the Diamond League series of international meets featuring Olympic-level athletes, had been scheduled for June 6-7 at the new Hayward Field in Eugene.

All Diamond League meets scheduled through June 13 have been scrubbed because of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. But organizers of the Oslo Bislett Games, which were to be held on June 11, say they will stage an alternative meet conforming to Norwegian coronavirus regulations on that date.

46th NIKE Prefontaine Classic/IAAF Diamond League meet will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene Oregon.

With the ongoing construction of Hayward Field the 2029 was held at Stanford. In advance of the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials and the 2021 IAAF World Championships, an alternate site for America's flagship invitational meet was required. After an extensive search in Oregon and along the West Coast, Stanford's facility was deemed the best choice to host the NIKE Prefontaine Classic, the only member of the prestigious IAAF Diamond League series of meets in the Western Hemisphere.

"Stanford provides the best combination of excellent facilities, good weather, and institutional support that we encountered," said longtime meet director Tom Jordan. "Their athletics department administration has been exceptionally welcoming, and we anticipate being able to provide the fans in the stands and the worldwide television audience a Prefontaine Classic worthy of the name."

Said Chris Miltenberg, Stanford's Bradford M. Freeman Director of Track and Field:

'We are really excited to bring the Prefontaine Classic and some of the best athletes in the U.S. and the world to Stanford. We really appreciate Nike, the Oregon Track Club and the Diamond League for recognizing Stanford as an ideal place to host this event in 2019. It's a big addition to our already world-class home schedule with the Payton Jordan and Stanford invitationals. Our program is and has always been built on athletes who aspire to the world championship level and hosting this meet at Stanford reinforces our collective mission."
