Leadville is the highest incorporated city and the second highest incorporated municipality in the United States. A former silver mining town that lies near the headwaters of the Arkansas River in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the Leadville Historic District contains many historic structures and sites from its dynamic mining era. In the late 19th century, Leadville was the second most populous city in Colorado, after Denver. Leadville was founded in 1877 by mine owners Horace Tabor and August Meyer at the start of the Colorado Silver Boom. The town was built on desolate flat land below the tree line. The first miners lived in a rough tented camp near the silver deposits in California Gulch. Initially the settlement was called Slabtown but when the residents petitioned for a post office the name Leadville was chosen.

Leadville is home to the annual Blueprint for Athletes Silver Rush 50 Run. Participants will experience50 miles of extreme territory that starts at 10,200 feet and reaches 12,000 feet on four separate occasions at the Blueprint for Athletes Silver Rush 50 Run. The route will take runners by and between many grand and historic gold and silver mines. It will leave your lungs burning, heart pounding and eyes completely amazed.

Western States 100

Sunday June 29th, 2025
Auburn, CA
Distance: 100 Miles · Ultra · Trail
Offical Race Web Site

The Western States ® 100-Mile Endurance Run is the world’s oldest and most prestigious 100-mile trail race. Starting in Squaw Valley, California near the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics and ending 100.2 miles later in Auburn, California, Western States, in the decades since its inception in 1974, has come to represent one of the ultimate endurance tests in the world.

Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the trail, the Western States Endurance Run differs substantially from other organized runs. Adequate mental and physical preparation are of utmost importance to each runner, for the mountains, although beautiful, are relentless in their challenge and unforgiving to the ill-prepared.

Following the historic Western States Trail, runners climb more than 18,000 feet and descend nearly 23,000 feet before they reach the finish line at Placer High School in Auburn. In the miles between Squaw Valley and Auburn, runners experience the majestic high country beauty of Emigrant Pass and the Granite Chief Wilderness, the crucible of the canyons of the California gold country, a memorable crossing of the ice-cold waters of the main stem of the Middle Fork of the American River, and, during the latter stages, the historic reddish-brown-colored trails that led gold-seeking prospectors and homesteading pilgrims alike to the welcoming arms of Auburn.

For more than four decades, Western States has been home to some of the sport’s most stirring and legendary competitions, and has spurred the capacity of spirit of all runners, of all abilities and from all walks of life, from all over the globe.

With more than 1,500 dedicated volunteers, offering the sport’s oldest and most prized possession – a sub-30-hour finisher’s bronze belt buckle or a sub-24-hour finisher’s silver belt buckle – and owning 100-mile racing’s richest and most compelling history, Western States remains one of the undisputed crown jewels of human endurance.

Western States 100

COURSE RECORDS as of June 30, 2022

The Western States Endurance Run is conducted along the Western States Trail starting at Squaw Valley, California, and ending in Auburn, California. The Run begins at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday of the last full weekend in June at the west end of Squaw Valley. Runners must reach the finish line no later than 10:59:59 a.m. on the following day in order to be eligible for an award. All entrants must strictly adhere to the Performance Rules, Rules for Pacers, Rules for Crews and to the pre-event briefing by Run Management to avoid disqualification and to remain eligible for an award.

The Western States Endurance Run follows the middle portion ofthe famous Western States Trail, a nationally dedicated recreational trail thatstretches from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Sacramento, California. One of the mostarduous organized running events in the U.S., the Western States 100 is trulythe “Ultimate Challenge” for the long distance runner. Entry in this eventshould not be taken lightly!

Beginning in Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter OlympicGames, the trail ascends from the valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) toEmigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in thefirst 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by thegold and silver miners of the 1850’s, runners travel west, climbinganother 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn, a smalltown in the heart of California’s historic gold country. Most of the trailpasses through remote and rugged territory. People who are unfamiliar with thearea should use caution when planning training runs, especially in the highcountry. Before leaving, let someone know where you will be running and whenyou will return. REMEMBER THAT MUCH OF THIS TERRITORY IS ACCESSIBLE ONLYBY FOOT, HORSE OR HELICOPTER.

Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the trail, theWestern States Endurance Run differs substantially from other organized runs.Adequate mental and physical preparation are of utmost importance to eachrunner, for the high mountains and deep canyons, although beautiful, arerelentless in their challenge and unforgiving to the ill-prepared.

  1. Course Route: The Run will follow the same basiccourse used since 1986 unless snow conditions force a route change.
  2. Familiarity: Knowledge of the trail offers bothphysical and mental advantages during the Run. Participants should make areasonable effort to run as much of the trail as possible before Run Day.Particular attention should be given to those sections that you expect to runin the dark, when your mental and physical energy may be lagging.
  3. After Dark: AS ALMOST A HALFOF THE TRAIL MAY BETRAVELED AT NIGHT, EACH RUNNER SHOULD CARRY TWO LED FLASHLIGHTS. If your lightsfail, wait for another runner with a light. Do not try to find your wayin the dark. If you are the last runner, wait for the Search and Rescue sweepteams. Plan to pick up a flashlight in Foresthill, regardless of what time youreach that point. If you are a 28 to 30-hour runner, plan to pick up aflashlight in Michigan Bluff.
  4. Weather: Since temperatures during the Run can rangefrom 20 degrees to above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, participants should be fullyprepared for both extremes. Weather conditions are unpredictable and can changerapidly.
  5. River Crossing: At 78 miles, runners must ford theAmerican River near the Rucky Chucky crossing. The ford is dangerous and SHOULDNOT BE ATTEMPTED ON TRAINING RUNS. On Run Day, a guide rope will be stretchedacross the river, with personnel available for assistance. River rafts are usedin high-water years.
  6. Wilderness: The remoteness of the trail can lead todisaster for anyone not experienced in the “backwoods.” For your own well-beingand survival, we recommend that you do not attempt a training run alone withoutletting someone know exactly where you are going and what time you will return.Trail markings will not be completed until a few days prior to the Run. Westrongly advise people who are unfamiliar with the area to buddy up with a“native guide.” Carry ample fluids, a water filtration pump and food supplies. There are dry stretches of over 8 miles during the Run and of 16 or more milesduring training runs.
  7. Trail Markings: Trail markings will consist ofpink surveyor’s tape tied to branches, “W.S. TRAIL” signsnailed to trees, and arrows and signs. (“Pioneer Express Trail” markers arelocated along portions of the trail. Do not refer to these as Run markers.) Inaddition, reflectors will be placedalongthe last 38 miles of the trail for the dark hours. Run Managementdoes its best to provide an adequately marked trail, but it is necessary forrunners to continually remain alert as they travel. On occasion, persons notassociated with the event have altered or removed course markings, or Runmanagement cannot place signage at a critical turn on Run day due to unusualcircumstances. A working knowledge of the trail, particularly of those milesthat will be covered in the dark, will be of infinite benefit to the runner whoattempts the Western States Endurance Run. YOU are ultimately responsible tofollow the correct course.
  8. Drops: If you have to drop out of the Run at apoint where your crew is unavailable, we will make every reasonable effort toget you to the finish or to the nearest major checkpoint that is still inoperation, particularly if you are in need of medical attention. Innon-emergency situations, you may have to wait several hours before beingevacuated. Runners having to drop from the Run BEFORE the Foresthill aidstation will be taken to Foresthill. Runners having to drop AFTER Foresthillwill be taken to the finish line. Our principal responsibility is to put on aRun, not to run a shuttle service for non-finishers; so please be patient. Aidstations will close when the footed sweeps or drag riders arrive.
  9. Trail Etiquette: Please be courteous to hikers, other runners and horsemen. Collisions on these narrow trails may bedisastrous. If you wish to pass another runner, ask for “trail right” or “trailleft” before attempting to pass. Slower runners must yield the trail to runnerswishing to pass. Horses may be spooked by the sudden appearance of a runner, with serious consequences to the rider. Stop and step off the trail to letoncoming horses pass. Runners should never pass a horse from behind withoutfirst notifying the rider.
  10. Volunteers: Approximately 1,500 dedicated volunteershelp out at each Western States Endurance Run. They are truly the life-blood ofthe Run and will do everything possible to make your day a success. Many spendmore hours out on the trail than do the runners themselves. Please be politeand make a point to thank them. Without the volunteers, there would be noWestern States 100.

U.S. Olympic Team Trials Track And Field

Sunday June 30th, 2024
Eugene , OR
Distance: 1500m · 5000m · 10000m
Offical Race Web Site

Eugene, Oregon has been awarded the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee announced today.

From June 21 to 30, Hayward Field at the University of Oregon will be home to one of the biggest track and field competitions in the country, as the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field will serve as the Team USA selection event for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

“As we look forward to Paris 2024, we’re delighted to return to Eugene for the U.S. Olympic Trials,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “During the pandemic, when venues all needed to take extraordinary measures to conduct events, the local organizing committee, TrackTown, demonstrated their commitment to the sport by working with USATF to prioritize the health and safety of our athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Trials. That partnership was invaluable. Having hosted that event successfully under difficult circumstances, we are pleased to give the city of Eugene and Hayward Field the opportunity to host an event at full capacity to showcase this world class facility. Hayward Field has been the site of countless memorable moments in track and field history, and we look forward to coming to Eugene, Oregon, to cheer on the nation’s best athletes as they compete to represent Team USA in Paris.”

Over the past five decades, Eugene has established itself as an epicenter for track and field in the United States. The town has been host to countless large-scale events, including the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, USATF Outdoor Championships, and seven Olympic Trials - all of which have seen a little bit of Hayward magic.

Over twenty records have been set or broken at Hayward Field, and the decathlon world record - crowning ‘the world’s greatest athlete’—has been broken multiple times at Hayward Field including in 2012, by Ashton Eaton during the Olympic Trials. This past weekend, two more world records were broken at Hayward Field during the Prefontaine Classic - this year’s Diamond League Final.

"Today's announcement is a major milestone on our journey to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," said USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland. "These trials not only serve as a pathway to Team USA, but also as a platform for athletes to exhibit their exceptional skills and strive for the chance to represent our great nation in Paris. We are eagerly anticipating witnessing the display of true greatness next summer in Eugene."

Reconstructed in 2020, Hayward Field is a state-of-the-art, athlete-first facility. Just outside of the stadium sits a custom-built warm up track, providing a seamless transition to the big stage. The event will be supported with unique, fan-first experiences in and around the stadium.

“Track Town, U.S.A. is thrilled to once again host the U.S. Olympic Team Trials,” said TrackTown USA CEO Michael Reilly. “Hayward Field at the University of Oregon is the perfect stage for selecting the No. 1 team in the world. As the local organizing committee, we are committed to providing a world-class experience for everyone who attends this magical event next year.”

The 2024 Trials will be the eighth U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field to be held at Hayward Field - with the first occurrence being the men’s team Trials in 1972. This will mark the 12th occurrence of the Trials as a combined men’s and women’s event and will be the 24th time that the Trials format is used to select the team.
