Jungfrau Marathon

The first 10 km of the course is flat. The race begins in central Interlaken and circles around the town centre before moving east to Bönigen, where runners briefly run along the shore of Lake Brienz.

The race proceeds southwards to Wilderswil at the 10km mark. From there the course heads upward through Zweilütschinen (at 15km) to Lauterbrunnen (at 20km). The course loops for 5km south of the town before returning to Lauterbrunnen and then heading eastward up the alpside. It is at this point that the race is steepest, zigzagging up the hillside and climbing 450m in the 5km to Wengen.

The course heads southeast and relentlessly upward over the Wengernalp, turning east and then northeast beneath the Eiger toward the finish. It reaches its highest point of 7,234 feet around the 40km point, and then heads steeply downhill for the last kilometre to the finish at Kleine Scheidegg at an altitude of 2061m.

Dingle Marathon

Both the half marathon and full marathons start together from the scenic Marina in Dingle Town with all participants heading off together in the direction of Ventry and onto Slea Head. The scenery is truly breathtaking with magnificent views of the Blasket Islands.

On leaving Dingle, participants pass over Milltown Bridge, past the woodlands at Burnham to the seaside village of Ventry where they get panoramic views of the long, curved strand of the stunning blue flag beach. On leaving Ventry the course continues westward, past Dunbeg Fort, and continuing with a sheer cliff on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

At Fahan the road crosses a ford where a water stream is magically redirected from the road to avoid runners wetting their feet! This is the only day in the year that water does not pass over the road ford. The course then reaches Slea Head itself, marked by a stone crucifixion scene, with dramatic views to South Kerry and the Blasket Islands. The course then follows the coast north, past the iconic Coumenoole Strand, where some of the filming of Ryan’s Daughter took place and on to Dunquin village.

Half Marathon

The Half Marathon finishes near the small village of Dunquin outside the door of Kruger’s Pub! What better place to finish? Half Marathon finishers take the opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved refreshment at Kruger’s Pub before returning by complimentary buses which are laid on to return them to Dingle Town to continue the celebrations and welcome home the Full Marathon participants.

(2018) 18-year-old Rhonex Kipruto from Kenya runs 26:46 Saturday evening at the Birell Praque Grand Prix. This is the second fastest-ever road 10k, while his compatriot Caroline Kipkirui moved to third on the women’s world all-time list. Phonex Kipruto – who was third in Prague last year in 27:13 and then ran 27:08 in New York before claiming the world under-20 10,000m title in Tampere – clocked 26:46 for a dominant win. It was a Kenyan top three as Geoffrey Koech ran 27:18 in second and Mathew Kimeli 27:26 in third. A total of 11 athletes dipped inside 28 minutes.

The women’s race was much closer and Kipkirui won in

30:19 ahead of Fancy Chemutai (30:22) and Diana Chemtai Kipyokei (30:23) to complete another Kenyan clean sweep.

Running alone with his opponents rapidly dropping back, Kipruto went through 5km in 13:31 before clocking a negative split of 13:15 to take 22 seconds off his PB. Only his compatriot Leonard Komon has run a faster time with his world record 26:44 set in 2010.

The course, which is relatively flat, is 10,000 metres long. The only tough hilly parts are after 6.5 km and after 9 km and are both followed by pleasant downhill stretches. There are officials at every road junction and signs along the course indicating the kilometre points. 90% of the surface is asphalt, the rest is gravel.
