EDP HALF MARATHON OF LISBON

EDP Lisbon Half Marathonis an annual internationalhalf marathoncompetition which is contested every March inLisbon,Portugal. It carries World Athletics Gold Label Road Racestatus. The men's course record of 57:31 was set byJacob Kiplimoin 2021, which was the world record at the time.

Kenyanrunners have been very successful in the competition, accounting for over half of the total winners, withTegla Loroupetaking the honours in the women's race on six separate occasions. The Lisbon Half Marathon is not to be confused with LusoPortugal Half Marathon, another prominent half marathon race which is also held in Lisbon in October.

The Lisbon Half Marathon grew from the desire of a small group to see Lisbon invaded by people who, by crossing the Bridge in 25th April, would discover and enjoy places usually monopolized by cars in a totally different way. It was a huge challenge for the time.

Looking at the big bridge, impressive in its steel structure and giant feet plunging into the Tagus River, the idea arose in the mind of Carlos Móia in a restaurant.

This had already been done abroad, but in Portugal, a country of conservative habits, the challenge would have to overcome many barriers. “I remember crossing the bridge on foot was a dangerous idea. As the subject had to pass through government, I soon realized this would be a long, bureaucratic process.

I spoke to my friend and companion of other adventures, Francisco Lucas Pires, who knew which paths to follow to execute this ‘crazy’ idea. He scheduled a hearing with the President of the Republic at the time, Mário Soares, who then took the matter to the Minister of Public Works, Ferreira do Amaral.

From there on came many days of silence. I didn’t give up, so I asked a hearing to the Minister, who told me to wait for an opinion by the office responsible for constructing the bridge in the United States, whether the structure could cope with an event such as this. Impossible without it! I thought there was no political will and felt disappointed, but I didn’t quit and insisted so much that the Minister eventually told me he would give his authorization if, as a replacement for the request opinion, I assumed responsibility for it. I obviously didn’t. I admit fear was greater than the desire to advance. If the Minister himself felt the need to request a technical opinion to the Eiffel company that built it, who was I to assume such responsibility?

“The information I longed for arrived soon: there was no danger, the bridge deck could cope with the challenge without problems. I assembled the team in a lightning quick operation: Mário Machado, Rafael Marques, Reinaldo Gomes were the mainstays, others joined in.”

After the bridge crossing was approved, it was time to get support from the Mayor of Lisbon, Jorge Sampaio. “He was a safe haven,” recalls Carlos Móia, “soon realizing the importance the event could have in projecting the city and always believing in the Half Marathon’s potential over the years”. And so it went, Sampaio was linked to the start of the event that, years later, he would participate in as President of the Republic.

On March 17th, 1991, began the official history of the Half Marathon, as the Minister of Education, Roberto Carneiro, who also oversaw sports, was in the first group of people ever to walk across the Bridge 25th of April.

EDP HALF MARATHON OF LISBON

The course was judged as non-permissible for records until 2008, in which year the organisers changed the elite course to allow for records. The new course begins atsea levelon the north side of the river Tagus, a change which made the course entirely flat. The course for the mass participation race, which has attracted almost 30,000 runners in previous years, remained unchanged and begins by crossing the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge before linking up with the new elite course. Since 2008 a 50,000 Euros bonus has been set aside for either a man or woman who sets a world record.

EDP Lisbon Half Marathon

The course race was measured officially by approved measurers of AIMS and IAAF and has an official distance of 21, 097 MTS.

  • The race start will take place at 10h 30 on the Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) a little after the toll barriers.
  • The Lisbon Half Marathon race course is very flat and it has a different point of start and finish, (point to point) This race is one of the fastest of the world

Winning the Gold Road Race title confirms the Lisbon Half Marathon as one of the most attractive in the world.

Distance: 10 Miles · 5K · 1 & 2 Mile Fun Runs
Offical Race Web Site

This race run by YMCA starts at City Hall and goes through the town of Medford, OR. The first Pear Blossom Run held in 1977 was won by Frank Shorter, Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist.

Thanks to Zellah and Jerry Swartsley who founded and led the Pear Blossom Run for the first 35 years. The race grew from 546 to 5,648 runners. Their caring, giving spirit drew in thousands of runners and volunteers throughout the years. Steven Buxton and Rich Stanfield with the YMCA, shown with Jerry and Zellah, continued the tradition. Their advice to the Rogue Valley Family YMCA is “when in doubt, give it out.” The Rogue Valley Family YMCA is committed to carrying on their incredible legacy.

Zellah and Jerry Swartsley, returning home from graduate school at Montana State University, stopped in Salt Lake City where a marathon was held and Jerry would finish 8th. An idea was born on July 24, 1971 and six years later it would become a reality. The first Pear Blossom Run held in 1977 was won by Frank Shorter, Olympic Marathon Gold and Silver Medalist.

The course is an out-and-back circumnavigation of the Warm Springs Arm of Lake Sonoma. It is 86% single-track trail and 9% dirt fire roads, with the first 2.4 miles on pavement. The trail is relentlessly rolling with three significant climbs.

There is about 10,500 feet of elevation gain and an equal amount of loss over the 50 miles. Trail quality is generally good;there are very few rocks and almost no roots. However, much of the trail is seldom used and so you can expect a lot of leaves and sticks on the trail.

There are twelve creek crossings and it is likely that your feet will get wet in most – if not all – of them.

California Classic Half-Marathon

Part of a weekend-long outdoor event for Fresno called the California Classic Weekend, the California Classic Half Marathon and two-person relay is set for its 8th annual running this year, along a course that takes runners through the city’s zoo and its dining- and entertainment-themed Tower District.

The event features a half marathon for both individual runners as well as two-person relay teams, and follows an out-and-back course that will start and finish at Fresno’s Chukchansi Park, the home of minor league baseball’s Fresno Grizzlies, the AAA-level affiliate of the San Francisco Giants major league baseball team.

Once runners leave the starting line in the park, the race course then heads out into downtown Fresno, taking runners past a number of local landmarks like the Fresno City Hall, the recently renovated federal courthouse and the historic Old Fresno Water Tower, whose history dates all the way back to 1894 and which provided water for the city until the early 1960s — and today serves as a tourist visitor center for the city.

After the run through the city’s downtown, the race then heads inside the grounds of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, which is home to more than 120 animal species — including 18 species listed on the Species Survival Plan, which works to help breed many of the planet’s rarest animals.

Runners will get the chance to run through the zoo’s park roads and past a number of animal exhibits before heading back out into the city.

Next the race takes runners past the city’s Tower District, where many of its popular clubs and restaurants are located, and then heads back over to Chukchansi Park for the race finish inside the baseball stadium — and where runners will be able to see themselves on the huge diamond vision screen as they cross the finish line.

Scheduled starting time for the half marathon and relay is 7:00 AM, and the course time limit for the half is 4 hours.
