Kosice, Slovakia
Distance: Marathon
Offical Race Web Site

The Kosice Peace Marathon is the oldest European marathon.

This year for the organizers of Kosice Peace Marathon is also about memories and flashbacks. One of the fastest marathon courses has been created in Košice 20 years ago on that occasion it was the 1997 IAAF World Half Marathon Champioships. Tegla Loroupe and Shem Kororia were awarded from the hands of IAAF President Primo Nebiolo on October 4, 1997.

That course is still fast and very attractive for both elite and all runners.
The Kosice Peace Marathon is an opportunity for every runner to take their family and friends and visit Košice, the gothic pearl of the Europe, European Capital of Culture 2013 and the Best European City of Sport 2016. Discover the place, where the fundamentals of modern marathon movement were set in 1924.

About the course.

This inner-city circuit is based on the original course set up for the World Half-marathon Championships in 1997. There are no prominent uphill sections, and the streets are fully asphalt surfaced. The marathon course consists of two laps, while the half-marathon runners complete just one. The marathon, as the main discipline of the KPM has IAAF and AIMS certificates issued for its course. Additional disciplines take place in parts and sections of this urban circuit, and their competitive distance is not subject to such international certifications.

A fast marathon course must be distinguished by several positive parameters. In addition to the low number of directional changes or sharp turns, the elevation profile is also obviously important. In Košice it was possible to create a course which from this point of view satisfied even the most demanding criteria.

In Berlin, where several world records have been run, the course has 21 directional changes that are relatively sharp or equal to 90° turns. In Košice the number of such changes in direction over both laps of the course is equally low.

If we take a closer look at the elevation profile of the course, we see that the elevation between the lowest and highest-lying points achieves on the city circuit in Košice only 16.35 m (200.700 m above sea level to 217.050 m a.s.l). Another major factor, the total of all climbs on the marathon course, in Košice adds up to only 74 metres. For comparison, the elevation difference in Berlin is 25.6 m (the sum of climbs is 37 m) and, for example, in Boston, 146.3 m (a sum of 241 m).

All the fast marathon courses must have couple of positive parameters. Besides very few direction changes or sharp turns it is of course the elevation profile. In Košice there is a course meeting the most challenging criteria. In Berlin where plenty of world records have been set up there are 21 direction changes on the course in the angle equal 90Ëšor even sharper. In Košice the number of such direction changes on the full marathon course is the same low.

If we have a closer look to its elevation profile we will find out that difference between the lowest point on this Košice city circuit and its peak is only 16,35 m (200,7 m above sea level – 217,05 m a.s.l.). The cumulative elevation gain on the marathon course is then 74 meters.
For your information in Berlin the difference between lowest and highest point is 25,6 m (cumulative elevation gain 37 m) and in Boston 146,3m (cumulative elevation gain 241 m).

EDP Lisbon Marathon

The Marathon Club of Portugal (MCP) was founded in 1989 by a group of friends that began running to fight stress and lose a “bit” of weight.

As running got more serious, the club started competing in Portugal and abroad, and became a top competitor on road and cross country events with a permanent presence on the podium’s, including the European Champions Club’s Cup.

In March of 1991, MCP organized its first running event, the Lisbon Half Marathon, a race that today still holds the Half Marathon World Record, 58:23, obtained in 2010. This year, the Lisbon Half Marathon celebrated the 26thedition with over 35.000 runners crossing the 25thof April bridge, an iconic symbol of the city of Lisbon.

Today MCP organizes 5 major running events in Lisbon, that altogether join over 80.000 runners every year racing from 5km to 42km along courses that are worldwide considered as some of the fastest and most beautiful courses in the world.

About the course.

The Lisbon Marathon leaves with as newness the start in the city of Cascais. The course that leads you to the finish, will allow you to take one of the most beautiful roads in the coast (Costa do Estoril). You will have a combination of turquoise sea in the background and then entering the historic area of Lisbon. The finish line is installed in the park Expo (Parque das Nações). The start will be made in the town of Cascais, ( Baía de Cascais, Passeio D. Luís I.) then following the coastal road that runs through the cities of Carcavelos, Estoril, Oeiras, with an impressive view of the sea Belem, Jeronimos Monestery finishing at the “Praça de Comércio” in the historical center of the city, joining the Marathon and the Half Marathon runners.

(2018) Three race records fall in wind-swept Lisbon

The fast-acting organisers of the EDP Lisbon Marathon and Vodafone Half Marathon delayed the start times of both races by an hour and moved the location of the start line for the half marathon to avoid the strong winds of Hurricane Leslie on Sunday (14).

Forecasts had predicted winds of 180kmph, making it impossible to use the bridge over the Tagus River for the starting point of the half marathon, an IAAF Gold Label road race. Instead, the race got underway on the IC2 motorway before re-joining the original designated course.

Ultimately, though, event records fell in three of the four races, meaning the extra effort organisers made in ensuring the events went ahead were all worthwhile.

Last-minute entrant Mustapha El Aziz of Morocco surprised the field in the men’s half marathon by taking three seconds off the race record to win in 1:00:16. The 32-year-old, who has a lifetime best of 59:29, comfortably defeated Ethiopia’s Abdiwak Tura Seifu and Eritrea’s Ammanuel Mesel, who clocked 1:00:41 and 1:00:45 respectively.

“I feel very happy to achieve this win with a good performance,” said the 2014 African 10,000m silver medallist. “When my manager told me I could race this event, I started focusing my training around this achievement. I’m really pleased with the organisation and this result is a good way of thanking them.”

The race record also fell in the women’s event as Ethiopia’s Yebrgual Melese surprised herself by winning in a lifetime best of 1:07:18, taking 35 seconds off the previous course record set in 2011 by Mary Keitany. European 10,000m champion Lonah Chemtai Salpeter finished second with an Israeli record of 1:07:55, defeating Kenya’s Betty Lembus by almost two minutes.

World marathon champion Rose Chelimo of Bahrain finished fifth in 1:10:37. Contesting her first half marathon since becoming a mother, Portugal’s 2012 European 10,000m champion Dulce Félix finished eighth in 1:11:50.

Getachew breaks Portuguese all-comers’ record

While the weather caused headaches for the organisers, the marathon runners found the tail wind to their liking and actually benefitted from the conditions in the IAAF Silver Label event.

After breaking away from the rest of the lead pack in the final kilometre, Ethiopia’s Limenih Getachew won the men’s race in 2:07:34, taking 47 seconds off the course record and Portuguese all-comers’ record set by Samuel Ndungu Wanjiku in 2014.

“I started to believe I could win just after the half-way point,” said the 28-year-old, who set his lifetime best of 2:06:49 when finishing second at the 2014 Paris Marathon. “I ran a faster second half because I wanted to set a personal best. I’m really happy with this result and I intend to improve this more and more.”

Wanjiku finished second in 2:07:51, also inside his own previous course record, while fellow Kenyan Justus Kimutai finished third in a PB of 2:07:58.

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Kuftu Dadiso smashed her personal best by almost seven minutes to win in 2:24:56.

Kenya’s Monica Jepkoech finished a distant second in 2:27:35 while Ethiopia’s Tigist Memuye completed the podium in 2:28:35.

Trento Half Marathon

Sunday October 5th, 2025
Trento, Italy
Distance: Half Marathon
Offical Race Web Site

In Trento we have joined forces by gathering together the city’s biggest running events to give birth to the “Trento Running Festival”.

The Festival is a whole weekend dedicated to running for people of all levels: top runners, amateurs, families and the young. The event offers the opportunity to meet and watch top athletes trying to beat their record at the half marathon. But why not run just for the fun of it and discover a city with a thousand surprises?

In Trento history is part of the action. The Giro al Sas is one of the oldest races in Europe. It was created in 1907 to honour the patron saint of the city and this year celebrates its 71st edition. It is run on Saturday evening on a 1km lap completed 10 times. Spectators get the chance to see the champions in action repeatedly — some of the best athletes in the world have come to race here, from Stefano Baldini to Paul Tergat and Kenesisa Bekele. The 2017 edition will not disappoint.

Designing a race for champions is difficult but putting one on that can fully satisfy amateurs is even more challenging. The race is designed to give runners the chance for fast times but also to enjoy the sparkling scenery of the city. Among the sights are the basilica of St Maria Maggiore, where the Third Session of the Council of Trento was held, the towers, the Buonconsiglio castle and the passage in front of the MUSE designed by Renzo Piano.

Trento Half Marathon

The course of Trento Half Marathon develops on a single tour entirely in the urban area of the city of Trento.

As the valley floor of the Adige River is wide, the race course is not rough, the only ascent is 300m long with a slope of 2%, the rest of the track has imperceptible slopes.

The route is therefore particularly fast and suitable for those who want a chronometric check in accordance with their physical form
