In 2022 the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon and Osaka Marathon were held together. For 2023 the name of the marathon will be Osaka and both men and women can run the race.
The original male-only competition was first held in 1946 and, having taken place every year since then, it is Japan's oldest annual marathon race. The early editions of the race were held in Osaka until a switch to Tokyo occurred for the 1963–65 marathons, and all subsequent races thereafter were held in Otsu, near Lake Biwa, where the race gets its name. It is sponsored by Mainichi.
The race begins and ends at the Ojiyama Stadium. The Lake Biwa Marathon has been selected as the Japanese national marathon championships on dozens of occasions, starting in 1960. The current course record for the competition is 2:06:13 set by Wilson Kipsang at the 2011 edition.

The Osaka International Ladies Marathon is an annual marathon road race for women over the classic distance of 42.195 kilometres which is held on the 4th or 5th Sunday of January in the city of Osaka, Japan, and hosted by Japan Association of Athletics Federations, Kansai Telecasting Corporation, the Sankei Shimbun, Sankei Sports, Radio Osaka and Osaka City.
The first edition took place on January 24, 1982, and was won by Italy's Rita Marchisio. The 1995 marathon was cancelled due to the Great Hanshin earthquake. The race takes place in the city and passes prominent landmarks such as Osaka Castle. The course was altered in 2011 to allow for faster times by cutting out a number of hilly sections near Osaka Castle. The finish line of the race is at Nagai Stadium, which was the host venue for the 2007 World Championships in Athletics.

Thank you for the 42nd Osaka International Women's Marathon 2023
The "42nd Osaka International Women's Marathon" (organizer = Japan Association of Athletics Federations, Sankei Shimbun, Sankei Sports, Kansai Television Broadcasting, co-organizer = Osaka City, organizer = Osaka Association of Athletics Federation) was successfully concluded on the 29th.
The course was renovated for the first time in 12 years, and heated races were held by top runners from Japan and abroad.
We would like to thank everyone who supported the runners in cooperation with infection control measures during the new coronavirus disaster.
We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, Osaka Prefectural Police, various organizations and companies, and many volunteers for their support.
The race starts and finishes at the Yanmar Nagai Stadium located in the South of Osaka, and covers the most scenic and historic areas of Osaka City. After leaving the Stadium, runners will make their way northward to the Osaka Castle and then, the Osaka City Hall. After the City Hall, runners will run under beautiful ginkgo trees along the Midosuji street, one of main streets of Osaka. Runners will once again pass the Osaka Castle before covering the last 12 kilometers back to the Yanmar Nagai Stadium. The course is mostly flat with little change in elevation and protected from wind by buildings and trees along the streets.
This is one of the most popular 50K in northern calif. It is always sold out with a waiting list. I have done this race six times. Always a great trail using a lot of the western states trail in auburn. It is a must race for anyone doing AR 50 in April.
