First held in 1952 as a 35km race, the looped marathon course begins at the bottom of Takasaki Mountain and reaches Beppu's Kankoko International Port before turning back towards the finishing point in the Aita Municipal Athletic Stadium. The race has IAAF Silver Label Road Race status. The event is sponsored by the The Mainichi Newspapers Co. and is formally known as the Beppu-Ota Mainichi Marathon.

The marathon race attracts approximately 500 entrants each year, of whom around two-thirds finish the course. The large majority of the runners are Japanese, or Japanese-based. A small number of international athletes are invited to compete each year, although other foreign athletes also appear in the race for pace setting purposes. An additional road race, the Beppu-Oita Mainichi Half Marathon, was held in conjunction with the main race between 1976 and 2001.

The Miami Marathon

Sunday January 25th, 2026
Miami, Florida
Distance: Marathon · Half Marathon · 5K · Kids Race
Offical Race Web Site

Over the past 16 years of the existence of the current Miami Marathon, there was only just over 90 athletes who had run every single event. Before the inception of the Miami Marathon as we know it now (est. 2003), the race was originally known as the Orange Bowl Marathon which began in the late 1970s. One of our very own 16-year #MiamiFamous loyal runners, Kenneth Royster, has run every single marathon held in Miami. Yes, that means he has run every Miami Marathon held during the past 40 years – that’s what you call Miami loyalty!

A retired airline pilot from Miami, Royster started running in 1974 and has completed close to 100 marathons since his debut to the sport in 1977. He has completed numerous events across the country – 5Ks/10Ks, marathons, 50K trail races and about every distance in between. Back in the late 70s/early 80s, the medals resembled more of a coin shape (usually with no date) instead of the medal and neck ribbon type of award we see today.

The original Miami marathon has changed quite drastically over the years including changes to the event name, the medal designs, demographics, anda variety of routes year after year, to name a few. “I remember these lean times of less than 1000 runners, starting at Tropical Park and running through the uninspiring suburbs of southwest Miami”, Royster recalled. “I remember at least one starting on South Beach. The route changed several times. [T]he event was cancelled in 1995 and not held again until the modern era starting in 2003.”

Check out how the name has changed over the years!

1977 – 1986, Orange Bowl Marathon

1987 – 1988, American Savings Orange Bowl Marathon

1989 – 1994, Metro-Dade Marathon

1995, Doral-Ryder Metro-Dade Marathon

2003 – 2005, Toyota Prius Miami Tropical Marathon

2006 – 2013, ING Miami Marathon

2014 – 2017, Miami Marathon

2018 – 2019, Fitbit Miami Marathon

Today the Fitbit Miami Marathon attracts over 20,000 runners from over 70 countries and all 50 U.S. states. Going on to the 17thyear of the event we know today, race organizers are diligently planning to make 2019 even bigger and better than prior years. We are happy to welcome back Kenneth and his fellow #MiamiFamous loyalty runners back for their 17thconsecutive partaking in the event, as well as many more veteran runners and first-timers!

Alsager 5

The Alsager 5 mile race started in 1985 and was called the Butters 5 starting and finishing outside the estate agents town center premises .Always held on the first Sunday in February.

Popular from day one as entries continued to grow it was time to move the race HQ to the Leisure Center one mile down the road.

This happened in 1991 and the race stills starts and finishes at the Leisure Center.

The number of entries continued to climb and now has a 1000 limit which is always reached with race full signs happening before race day.

A flat fast course Alsager is ideal to see how your winter training has gone or if you have just taken up running this is a great first race as it attracts all abilities and all are welcome .
This race not only attracts local runners but also runners from outside the area . It is also the curtain raiser to North Staffs Road Runners first race of the season.

Things got easier for the organizers in 2014 when chip timing was introduced, we sometimes wonder how we managed when it was manual timing with runners finishing one a second and using our 3 lane system.

My Best Runs Comments

Bob Anderson
The first seven miles is in Golden Gate Park, then we run along the Pacific Ocean. You couldn't ask for a more scenic and famous route. Good course and a fun time. I have run this race five times.
Kat Powell
Very scenic course in Golden Gate Park and along the Pacific Ocean. The terrain is mostly flat with gradual grades. The weather can be a challenge. In 2008, when I ran this, it was very nasty weather with freezing rain and wind. Was lucky to finish in under 2 hours, as my hands were numb and bones were shaking!
