This is the only bronze label road race in Taiwan, attracting the attention of many marathoners. The image of surging toward the finish line symbolizes the many obstacles along the race, and the joy of reaching the goal.

The New Taipei City Wanjinshi Marathon started in 2003 as the Jinshan Marathon. Up until now, 2017, the marathon has been held for 15 years. For the very first Marathon held, the ending point was located at Jinshan Youth Activity Center, with around 4,000 runners participating in this local sports event. In 2004, the course of the event expanded to include both Jinshan and Shimen Municipal Districts, the name of the event thus changed to the Jinshi Marathon.

Later, in order to minimize the impact on local residents resulting from traffic controls of the event, the starting and ending points were relocated to the Pacific Green Bay (Taipingyang Feuicuiwan) in Wan Li since 2006. After five years of preparation, the event planning expanded to include the Wanli, Jinshan, and Shimen Municipal Districts in 2009, and the names of each municipal districts were abbreviated to form the new name of the event, Shiwanjin Marathon.

New Taipei City WJS Marathon

From 2010, in order to accommodate with the route of the Marathon began at Pacific Green Bay (Taipingyang Feuicuiwan) in Wan Li, then proceeded through Jinshan to Shimen Junior High School, the name was changed to the Wanjinshi Marathon accordingly. With the establishment of the event coverage in terms of administrative districts, the route course and the name of the Marathon, the “Competition Brand” concept was gradually formed through years of promotion and operation. As the event recorded higher participation rate on a year-on-year basis, the Marathon has attracted more and more runners to registered. The registered participants increased significantly for more than 3,000 in 2011 to a total of over 9,000 participants. In 2012, there participation rate officially surpassed 10,000 people, marking the event as one of the most popular marathons in Taiwan.

In 2013, after the 11th Marathon was successfully held, experts in Taiwan proposed that the Wanjinshi Marathon was the only marathon in Taiwan which could qualify for International Association of Athletics Federations accreditation, so at the 118th City Council Meeting for New Taipei City, Mayor Li-Lun Chu announced that Wanjinshi Marathon would seek for international accreditation, aiming at achieving Bronze Certification status.

In 2014, Wanjinshi Marathon formally submitted its application to International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for bronze label road race via Chinese Taipei Athletics Association. In October of the same year, IAAF announced their approval, New Taipei City Wanjinshi Marathon thus become the first and only marathon in Taiwan with bronze label road race. This recognition not only made Wanjinshi Marathon become the most prestigious marathon in Taiwan, but also allowed New Taipei City to make its debut on the world stage of sports through being added to the annual marathon calendar of IAAF.

During the marathon of that year, the Wanli, Jinshi and Shimen Borough Councils gathered thousands of people dressing up as Cheerleading Squads to line along the event route beginning from early in the pre-dawn hours. They were fully costumed as regional famous heritage sites such as Wanli Hsieh, Nu Wang Tou, Jinshan Hot Springs and the Shimen Kite. There were also large drum performances and electronic versions of traditional Taiwanese customs such as the San Tai Zi along the way. Despite the chilly morning, these volunteers showed their warm-hearted spirit for all the participants, showing their enthusiasm to the public. Nowadays, the competition had overcome the inconveniences of imposing traffic controls and had gathered a strong and supportive consensus among local residents, becoming an annual event that all the residents of the North Coast of Taiwan were look forward to every year.

In 2015, for the first time the Marathon after being awarded road race bronze label, in light of the cool and rainy weather prevailing in early March along the northern coast in Taiwan, the event was adjusted to the third Sunday in March from its original date on the first Sunday of March in the past. That year, the event witnessed participation of 12,000 runners, competing with many world class participants among them. Moreover, the event organizers developed a homestay program for international participants of the Wanjinshi Marathon. The homestay arrangements with volunteer families were made for two days and three nights, allowing the international participants to see the marvelous geographic scene in Yehliu, experience the local fishing port culture, and visit traditional heritage sites as well as the Jinshanbayan community. From this aspect, the Marathon had evolved from an athletic event to an opportunity to enjoy the authentic cultural experience in Taiwan.

The 2018 New Taipei City Wanjinshi Marathon is scheduled to begin at 6:30am on 18th March 2018, with the starting point located in the Pacific Green Bay (Taipingyang Feuicuiwan) in Wan Li. The event initiated a mobile application for registration, allowing the participants to get hold of the conditions for registration and weather. Also, through the locating function, the runners will be able to learn about their rank and results. The application also provides the live streaming of the Marathon and services such as uploading photos of runners, thus building a customized database for Wanjinshi Marathon. In this way, we could leverage on Wanjinshi Marathon to shorten the distance between human and technology.

The LA Marathon is an annual running event held each spring in Los Angeles, Calif. The 26.219 mile (42.195 km) footrace, inspired by the success of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, has been contested every year since 1986. While there are no qualifying standards to participate in the Skechers Performnce LA Marathon, runners wishing to receive an official time must successfully complete the course in eight hours. To date, there have been 459,570 official finishers.

Los Angeles is a popular venue for novice marathoners, and on average 53 percent of the runners who make up the field are attempting a marathon for the first time. The Marathon has been through several course layouts since its inception, most of which started and finished in downtown Los Angeles. On Sept. 25, 2008, former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team owner Frank McCourt, through his affiliate, LA MARATHON LLC, acquired the operating rights to the marathon.

Less than 14 months later, on Nov. 9, 2009, race organizers unveiled a new “Stadium to the Sea” course which shifted the starting line to Dodger Stadium and the finish line to the Santa Monica Pier. Due to the enthusiasm generated by the dynamic new point-to-point course, the 2010 edition of the race drew 26,054 registrants (22,361 finishers), making it the largest field in the history of the event.

As was the case with Kerzers in the past, hardly anyone can say exactly after 50 years. It was 1959, when some gymnasts of the Tunverein Kerzers participated in the Bösinger run.I went as a spectator and I did not like it badly.I inquired of one of the persons in charge of the Bösinger run if there were other such runs in the region. This gave me the answer that there would be a runners' association, where the call with all races could be ordered.I have ordered this tender and in 1960 also took part in the Erlacher Waldlauf.

Own courage and a lot of skepticism in the board
In the autumn of 1960, I made the proposal to the board of the Turnverein Kerzers to organize a cross country run in Kerzers. The interest was not particularly great, the resistance and skepticism in any case greater. The board recommended that I take the organization myself by the hand. And they did not only mean to take the overall responsibility, but also to search for a suitable route, to undertake all organizational preparatory work and also to look for volunteers at the same time.

I did not let go of my plan and started immediately with the preparatory work.A few days later I reported the date for the first cross country run of Kerzers to the runners' association. At Kramer and Huguenin I also ordered brochures for ordering the medals. The medal subject coined the title page of the tender which I authored and printed.Soon also sponsors were found who made the printing of the poster possible.Pleasingly, volunteers spontaneously volunteered to pitch the posters throughout the Seeland, in Freiburg and Bern.Gross was the amount of work for the mailing of tenders, because the demand was to my surprise very large.I then contacted a number of companies for flags to mark the route and race numbers had to be organized somehow. The company Knorr contacted me at the food stall at the destination Bouillon auszuschenken. After much back and forth, I also found three helpers who agreed to write the start cards for the runners. In order to observe the work of other organizers and to gain experience, I took part in events in Bösingen, Kirchberg, Grosshöchstetten and Rohrbach as a runner. When I then told the gymnastics club the status of my work and the number of registered runners, yes, there the attitude of the board changed in a flash.Everyone was excited and suddenly stood like a man behind me.They were ready to help and the various tasks were distributed immediately.
No fewer than 600 runners were at the start, which was a considerable field of competitors at that time. The event went smoothly and the volunteers did a great job.The cross-country run of Kerzers was born.

A lot of manual work instead of fast computers
Of course, we did not have any computers at the time for the time recording and evaluation of results.Immediately after the finish line, the runners were taken off the starting cards and immediately noted the runtime on the card for the first 5 minutes. The cards were then bundled consecutively in the appropriate order and a courier brought them immediately after the end of the race of the respective category to the accounting office. This was in the house of the nursery Stocker.Secretaries and helpers were there ready to type the rankings in the typewriter. The originalists were spoiled with blueprints and less than an hour later, a ranking list was bought for the price of 50 cents

Record attendance with 1100 runners
The following four runs took place in approximately the same way.The distribution of the start cards has been changed. This was packed with the start number in an envelope and handed out to the runners before the race.Instead of Knorr, we were able to win the company Wander, which Ovomaltine handed out to the runners. In addition, the club operated a Buvette to offer the spectators a catering option. The cross country runs were always very well attended. The largest number of participants were 1100 runners.

The end came in 1965.
At the end of 1965 I had enough. The organizational effort was too much for me, because I was additionally engaged in the organizing committee for the Cantonal Gymnastics Festival in Kerzers during this time.I simply did not have the time to reconcile all my volunteer activities. In vain did the gymnastics club look for a suitable successor. Most of my office was associated with too much work and so the field run by Kerzers was buried after only five executions.

Today I believe that the idea of the former cross-country race and the later long-distance running of the Kerzerslauf was born.Much has changed over the years, but one thing has remained the same in organizing such events. It still needs people who enjoy sports, people who have a vision and are willing to take responsibility.

Canyonlands Half Marathon

Saturday March 15th, 2025
Moab, Utah
Distance: Half Marathon · 5 Mile
Offical Race Web Site

The first Canyonlands Half-Marathon was run on May 1, 1976. All of 22 runners (plus one dog) crossed the finish line at Lion’s Park at the intersection of Highways 191 and 128. The next year a Five-Mile Run was added; it had seven finishers. The races grew steadily over the next decade and a half. In 1983 when the Rim Rock Roadrunners (RRR) took over from the Chamber of Commerce, there were 631 finishers in both events.

That same year the RRR instituted the Winter Sun 10K. In the 1990s Moab, Utah was discovered as a tourism destination and participation really took off. By the time current race director Ranna Bieschke was appointed in 2002, more than 3200 people were crossing the finish line. She and course director Sheri Simmons added The Other Half to the race roster in 2004, then founded Moab Half-Marathon, Inc. in 2006.

In 2012 they introduced the all women's Thelma & Louise Half-Marathon. Today the organization employs 11 event staff and coordinates with dozens of local organizations and hundreds of volunteers to present the Canyonlands Half- Marathon, Thelma & Louise Half-Marathon, The Other Half and the Winter Sun 10K.

An island of busy civilization in a sea of desert wilderness, Moab is southern Utah's adventure base camp. Day trippers to Arches or Canyonlands National Parks can return to a hot tub and pub food, a boon after a dusty day on the trail. Unlike the rest of the region, here you can shop for groceries till midnight, buy a bottle of tequila, get a cell signal and even a late dinner.

For those coming from the wilderness, the hubbub can be jarring. Corporate chain motels line Main St, souvenir shops abound and streetlights and neon signs blot out the night sky. Still, there’s a distinct sense of fun in the air. Everyone is here to play in Utah’s recreation capital – from the hiker to the four-wheeler, recreationists’ enthusiasm borders on fetishism.

Runners get the chance to run in the shadow of the majestic red rock formations of Utah’s Arches National Park at the Canyonlands Half Marathon, which will celebrate its annual running as winter is giving way in the spring.

Now one of the Moab area’s most popular outdoor athletic events, the race has seen its field of runners grow from just 21 at its first running to more than 2,700 finishers, thanks in large part to the stunning red rock scenery that lines the course.

Set at a moderate elevation of about 4,000 ft., the half is run on a USATF-certified and sanctioned course that offers a challenging mix of rolling hills and fast descents.
