This event is social, cultural, environmental, tourist and above all historical significance and it is the perfect representative of our city of our Macedonia and our country throughout the world.

The International Marathon is member of the International Marathons Association (AIMS) and it is included in the official and annual calendar.

Thessaloniki (520 km. north of Athens) is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the geographic region of Macedonia.

The Marathon race starts at the Central Square of the Municipality of Pella in front of the statue of the "Alexander the Great". The 10Km Road Race starts at the Municipal Stadium of Ampelokipi. The 5Km Road Race starts at Central Ampelokipi Square.

A total of 16.800 runners, aged 9-85 years, flooded the streets of Thessaloniki and Macedonia, lived a unique experience, won the applause of many fans and sent a message of fitness and health, through an event that has also social, cultural, environmental, touristic and historic character. An event since 2006 displays throughout the world the name of Alexander the Great.

The Marathon route is of low difficulty. Its main characteristics are the small altitude fluctuations and the long straight street that make it ideal for great records. Some other characteristic features are its constant east direction, the long straight street and the limited inhabited areas which it crosses until almost the 30th kilometer.
The race starts from Pella, in front of the statue of Alexander the Great on horseback, hardly a km from the homonym archaeological site, and some 43 meters above sea-level. After the first km of downhill road, the athletes get onto the Thessaloniki-Edessa highway, following it for another 8 km, until they reach Chalkidona.

History

Seas and land have divided the lacework geography of Istanbul into four pieces. Old Istanbul City and Galata in the shores of Golden Horn and previously different village now united residential districts are located along the straits of Bosphorus. As the smallest sea of the world, inhabited places along the shores of Marmara Sea shows the magnitude that the city has reached. The Old City is spread over the seven hills of the triangular peninsular surrounding it with 22km of city walls. This is a historical settlement area called Byzantine, New or Second Roman Empire, Constantinople or Polis over the years. Marmara and Golden Horn city wall partially vanished over time; the actual landside city walls, however, have relatively survived till today.
