The first Ironman was held in 1978 in Oahu, Hawaii Ironman is beginning the “40 Years of Dreams” campaign in celebration. Throughout the course of the 2018 Ironman and Ironman 70.3 event series, the campaign will be rolled out in a variety of ways, leading up to the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on October 13. On February 18, 1978, 15 dreamers set out on the shores of Oahu, HawaiI, to complete what was thought to be the impossible – swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running 26.2 miles, totaling 140.6 miles in a single day, as they looked to put an end to the argument of who were the best athletes in the world – swimmers, cyclists, or runners.
